When my husband and I were first married we were very poor. My parents bought us our first Christmas tree. We didn’t have anything to put on that tree, so I made all the ornaments from baking soda. I had the twelve days of Christmas cookie cutters, and a paint set It was the most beautiful Christmas tree!
My wife asked me if we was going to have a Charlie Brown tree again. When we moved into our new place COVID had just hit here and we also had absolutely NOTHING. I MEAN NOTHING... I stayed up all night just so she would have a tree and present to wake up to. I found the saddest little ugliest tree I could find in the woods and brought it home. 😊😊 A few years later, I had no clue how much she loved that day... Also happens to be the day we got together 🤗
i love baking soda clay because it's so white. i used this clay to make ornaments with my 4 year old son - 40 years ago. we still have them! now i'm making ornaments with my 4 year old granddaughter.
That's really awesome. I wish I'd come across this craft when my nieces & nephews were still little. Oh well I'll just have to do my own. Maybe I could do a cats pawprint with kitties. They'd probably get annoyed but for a good keepsake that's ok once. I'll just bribe them with canned food.
I used to make little dolls from this back in the 70's , I would use watered down white glue after to seal them , then paint them with model paints. My mom has kept them all these years and then still look perfect .
We used this recipe to make Christmas ornaments when I was in elementary school, way back in the 70’s. We made them on Friday and left them on the windowsill to dry over the weekend then painted them on Monday, sealed them with a layer of white glue on Tuesday and took them home on Wednesday when we got out for Christmas. Such great memories!❤❤
I made this way back in the day, 70’s . My sister reminded me recently that I had made pendants and put beads and shells on them, then put them on necklace cords. She bought them to give to her junior high friends, and they loved them. Ahhh…Distant memories. I recently used this recipe with my granddaughter. It worked just as you demonstrated and what we didn’t use I stored in zip lock bag and stored in the refrigerator. It stayed there for months. This time we had fun make little figurines. Easy and cheap but works fantastically.
It is a wonderful craft. One thing I like was the fact if a child decided to taste it, 😅 it is safe!! Thanks I have also made the salt/flour dough. It to looks like crystal and has a glitter to it. You can air dry or bake it, 😊❤
When I made this for kiddos when I would babysit, I would use koolaid to color the batches, as well as smell good. Didn't have to worry about them getting dye all over. This method works better.
I'm so glad that you mentioned storing it and how to do so. That was my question. I'm also grateful for the comments in this post. They reminded me about salt dough and I learned that adding kool-aid to the baking soda clay is where it's at. 😊 I was just searching for something fun to do with my grandbabies tomorrow. The timing for this couldn't be more perfect. Thank you all! ❤

Cold Porcelain actually contains glue, which makes it stronger and more flexible than this. But I imagine adding glue, handcream, and vinegar like cold porcelain to this would work well.
I wonder if it would become rubbery. I havent actually done either, but there's an appeal about this one being able to take so much detail from the mold. I wonder what kind of clay is best for that sort of application...
Hey Deidre, thank you so much for sharing this very easy , non toxic recipe. I work with , " special needs " kiddos I need to be extra careful what they can craft with. Thank you again. Love & Blessings from Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia ❤️ xo

I have all of these ingredients in my kitchen now. I'm super excited to let my grandbabies make ornaments with me. Thank you so much for sharing this with us. 😊 I have a QUESTION: can you store this clay after making it or does it need to be used right away? Also, if you can store it how do you recommend doing so?
So your putting a few drops of an essential oil to the clay “mixture” and each piece made will retain that scent ? For how long ? Thanks ! Great video !
Years ago I made Christmas ornaments using this clay. Rolled out and pressed cookie cutters into it . Then poked a hole into the dough at the top using a wooden spoon handle dowel tip. When the ornaments were dry I strung thin ribbon through the hole. Have used food coloring to color the dough when making it. Follow the drying time in video. Thanks for the memories.

Really like this homemade clay. Opens your mind to use imagination and quite easy to obtain the ingredients. Thanking you for taking the time to share your wonderful ideas.
She used it in a silicone mold in the video. I think she used corn starch as a release agent in previous videos. Baking Soda Clay basically is its own release agent though. It doesn't stick to things like paper clay or air dry clay does.
Wonderful recipe! Going to make a watercolor paint tray pallette with it. I’ve seen a variety of them in videos so your clay recipe allows me to experiment and design one. What fun this will be!

Thankyou for this wonderful ideas! Im from the Philippines and air dry clay is a bit expensive especially if youre working on a big project. I am an arts and crafts fan. Right now my project is to do miniature houses for my christmas village. Im gonna try this home made clay for my project and ill update you with its results. Thankyou so much! Youre such a big help. Im a big fan now! 😊❤ Love from the Philippines! ❤❤❤
The nice thing about this home made clay is that insects and mice dont seem to be attracted to it. I used to be a teacher, and some of the other flour based clays dont seem to last as well.
@@OurUpcycledLifeHow about water? Can you get them wet? If so, for a short period of time or a long period of time? I'm thinking of use in the garden for custom plant saucers or planters.
This is also a great alternative to Play-Doh for children who have celiac disease, since Play-Doh contains gluten, and many people with celiac disease can’t touch things with gluten in it.
I would love to try this to design and decorate tiles for a backsplash behind my stove in my kitchen. How do you think they would hold up? And I’ll have to do some research on what people use to adhere tiles to their drywall
They would probably need some kinda clear acrylic or epoxy coating to keep them cleanable and dry from high humidity cooking. But I need a new back splash too! ☺

Wow, looks like a better alternative to salt-flour dough! 😍😍😍 I recently moved across the ocean and had to leave my air-dry modelling clay behind and been missing it, so I'm super glad I've found this video! 😍😍😍
This was a standard Christmas craft when i was in primary school in the 70s. We mixed it up , used Christmas cookie cutters to shape it and then painted it with our student paint pots. Add a ribbon and voila! Orniments for our class tree!
@@OurUpcycledLife salt dough was another favourite. I grew up in a poor village so the teachers were creative in finding ways to make things fun. Another popular class Christmas craft was to cut apart egg cartons, paint the little paper egg cups, and add a pipe cleaner to hang them in the tree! Each kid brought a carton from home.

How water resistant is it after drying? How durable is it? Does it shrink much when drying?
I ask because I’ve been using polymer clay, and while I don’t mind baking it (in my craft-dedicated toaster oven) it shrinks unpredictably making cavities too small for what I need.
I haven’t found that it shrinks much with drawing, and you wouldn’t want to have an exposed to too much water

Oh sounds like a lovely project
How is the Christmas village coming along? Did the clay work?
As kids my twin and I made ornaments this way. ❤
The nice thing about this home made clay is that insects and mice dont seem to be attracted to it. I used to be a teacher, and some of the other flour based clays dont seem to last as well.
Thank you so much..can't wait to try this activity with my very active 3 year old grand daughter. Will let you know how it turns out❤
Have fun!
Can the food coloring be added to the water before cooking it ? Thank you so much, can't wait to try, much appreciated.
Yes you can!
This clay is SO cool.I never knew baking soda could be used to make homemade clay!😊
It's so good!
I never knew that’s how “cold porcelain” was made!!! How awesome!
It's so good!
Actually, it's not cold porcelain 'cause no glue was added.
YOU are my favorite go to for excellent ideas!!! 🥰🥰🥰🥰
Yay! Thank you!
Awesome! How durable are decor items using this recipe- wondering how easy it breaks or cracks
I’ve had some of mine for a few years . Not like plastic but will hold up well
@@OurUpcycledLifeHow about water? Can you get them wet? If so, for a short period of time or a long period of time? I'm thinking of use in the garden for custom plant saucers or planters.
@@cs7717 No on the water-proof ability, they are made with food after all....🤔
Wow this is amazing! I'm going to try it out. Thanks so much for this tutorial 🥰
You’re welcome 😊
How long does it hold up in a sealed bag after you make, or can you make it ahead of time?
Keep in fridge for a few weeks sealed container
Thank you! I have made cold porcelain in the past.forgot the recipe. Thanks again!
You are so welcome!
When I was a kid, my mother couldn't afford to buy Play-Doh so she used to make clay like this for me instead. And it was fun!
Great memories
This recipe smells better than play-doh!!
This is also a great alternative to Play-Doh for children who have celiac disease, since Play-Doh contains gluten, and many people with celiac disease can’t touch things with gluten in it.
Sunday school and kids club! They loved making things with this clay!
Such a fun project. Enjoy.
I would love to try this to design and decorate tiles for a backsplash behind my stove in my kitchen. How do you think they would hold up?
And I’ll have to do some research on what people use to adhere tiles to their drywall
Not sure it would hold up well if a lot of water would get on it
They would probably need some kinda clear acrylic or epoxy coating to keep them cleanable and dry from high humidity cooking. But I need a new back splash too! ☺
@@noeldeal8087would be awesome to design our own
Many fabulous and unsung teachers made this year's ago. They made it at home and took it to school. Beautiful jewelry and so much more.

Great memories
If you cherish your enameled pot, don't use metal utensils in it. 😬
I love this recipe because the clay is so white. TYFS❤❤
You are so welcome!
Never tried it brfore. Never even heard of it before. Thank you for sharing.
Hope you enjoy
Oh, your baking soda clay ornaments would look so beautiful decoupaged! Is there much shrinkage with this clay? I’m looking for a lightweight clay to use on plastic baubles. Thanks for sharing. 👏👏
I don’t find much shrinkage
I’m looking for light weight clay to use on baubles as well! Thanks for asking the question.👍🏼
Thanks for the recipe to this Beautiful Clay. I Love It!❤😂🎉
My pleasure 😊
Simply genius, I will certainly be using this. Compliments from across the pond my dear.
Wonderful!
Wow, looks like a better alternative to salt-flour dough! 😍😍😍 I recently moved across the ocean and had to leave my air-dry modelling clay behind and been missing it, so I'm super glad I've found this video! 😍😍😍
Hope you like it!
Thank you very much I have several little grandchildren that love clay I can't wait to make it for them!

This was a standard Christmas craft when i was in primary school in the 70s. We mixed it up , used Christmas cookie cutters to shape it and then painted it with our student paint pots. Add a ribbon and voila! Orniments for our class tree!
Great memories
@@OurUpcycledLife salt dough was another favourite. I grew up in a poor village so the teachers were creative in finding ways to make things fun. Another popular class Christmas craft was to cut apart egg cartons, paint the little paper egg cups, and add a pipe cleaner to hang them in the tree! Each kid brought a carton from home.
I have an old ornament I colored in kindergarten and now I’m wondering whether they were made of this.
Grazie. Era quello che cercavo, senza l'uso di colla vinilica!! Grazieeee
Glad you enjoyed
Thanks, This was Great , I'll be using it on my next Diorama ...............
You have the best tips for crafts I've ever seen

Hola preparé esta masa y la moldee, pero se quebró después de seca, que hice mal? 😢
Does this clay have to be used right away or will it keep for a while in an air tight container? Thanks for sharing the recipe!
Yes it will
wow - no idea this was a thing - *exactly* what I need - *THANK YOU*
No, but I remember a science teacher making us do a project of making a salt map of Texas! My mom spent hours on it.
Excelente gracias 😊

Very wholesome video and such a great idea. Thank you!
