Haha, that's what I was thinking, too. From the 1960's, and I would talk around the neighborhood and sell them for 25c each. There was a tool I used to pull the loops through. Why aren't you @trashmagination using one? Good job on the rugs, too.
This is so awesome. My grandmother used to do this out of bread bags. We go in and out taking care of livestock all day and we have free roam birds. I hose off my feet and shoes multiple times a day. Kitchen rugs are so handy and these can go right in the washer. I'm going to have to make room to do this. I can collect cheap or free shirts every weekend. Thank you

This reminds me of old style quilting. I have a over 100 yro hand-me-down quilt that is obviously straps of old clothes with the backing being an old patterned sheet. I love this quilt. Hand sown and one of a kind!
I love your creativity in recycling! I’ve been making balls of T-shirt yarn to crochet rugs but haven’t been back to cutting them for a while. This inspires me to keep going! Thanks!
I picked up a couple of large frames ( they had been used as screens) a few years ago, knowing I wanted to try making rag rugs. Unfortunately they have warped from storing on the balcony. I wonder if I added the corner brackets you used if I could get them to lay flat again? They are rather simple, looked as if they were home made screens for large windows, not like your heavy picture frame. I still might give it a try, especially after watching this tutorial. It really does look relaxing and by using the same solid color ( black) as guide marks, easy to know when to weave up or down! Thanks so much for sharing. 👍🏼🥰
Am confused as to old socks loooking that good and old t shirts looking good. If given bags of others' trash, I could make this, but I wear my clothes that I like to death as tank tops after being stained or torn orwirn at the wrists and waistband. Good demonstration well filmed
i cut strips and ripped fabric and old clothes. and tied them in a knot together to crochet with. making a long strip, about 1 and a half inch width. i like your idea too. we used to make pot holders with the loom kit at the store you can buy. i wonder if you wanted a bigger rug could you sew them together or crochet them together.
My daughter in law homes schools and I sent her this video. I think it could be great for them. From making the frame to collecting the shirts and so on.
What an excellent Idea. I might try and cut the teeshirts into strips, fold them and stitch them as the hem so I can use it up. Thanks for the well illustrated piece of craft.
Cut them twice as wide and roll or fold them. No need to stitch. That’s a great idea though. I’ll bet you could get printer mistakes shirts at a great deal if you wanted to coordinate colors. Using the entire t shirt, cutting twice as wide a strip that doesn’t go all the way through the fold, gives you a continuous yarn. Like they do with plastic bag yarn. Y’all got me thinking!👍

🌻 Hello Carla Brown, it's so nice to meet you! I'm now a new Subscriber to your channel. I love your loom and weaves! Besides using them as rugs around the home, those cushy, cozy rugs would make great comfy mats for dogs and cats at shelters, as well as using for them at their homes. By the Grace of God, I'll be 67 next month... I say that only to share fond memories of weaving potholders for my Mom as a pre-teen/new teen. I also sold them to our neighbors to make some pocket money for whatever little trinket or toy I wanted without having to ask my Mom and Dad for money... the budget was tight! I'm a metal/wire Scrapper and have been a recycler since I was a teenager, so your loom and rug weaving is right up my alley. Thank you for sharing your great ideas with all of us. I'll be catching up on your past videos soon, I know I'll find more gems to work on! Til then, happy weaving 🌞!
Ooh what are the bins? That sounds like a fun place. Yes the frame needs to be sturdy but you can take a wobbly frame and reinforce it with metal brackets like I did. I look forward to seeing your rugs!
When you are close to the end and it’s too tight to weave with your fingers, take a wire clothes hanger and straighten it except for the hook on the end. You can use this to weave in and out of the tighter spaces and pull the loops through with the hook.
Love the birds and the breeze in the background. Very peaceful. You taught me a new skill although I don't really have a source for the tshirts but it would be nice to try.
That is amazing! I love reusing old things and not throwing things away. Plus the fact that you made your loom with a recycled wood frame. I'm wanting to make one and do this as well. How great! I love this thank you for sharing. I use to crochet tshirts that I tore in to strips that I could get a Goodwill back then for 39 cents a pound. The rugs are great over carpet not so much for hardwood floors or vinyl as they do tend to slide but for carpets they are great, for outdoors, for bedding for cats and dogs perfect. Anna In Ohio
Wonderful - good luck with your project! Just a warning that if the t-shirts are very well worn, sometimes the fibers have actually broken down so much that the t-shirt yarn just breaks apart when I make it. If you pull on the yarn and it just breaks, don't use those t-shirts. Those are too far gone.

You could get a couple more weaves in at the end by making a flat tool to weave through and then catch the loop of your weave fabric and draw it through behind it.

instead of tying them in knots at the end, you could crochet them all together to give a neater finished look, then tying the last one into a knot cutting the ends of the knot off.
I have, on the rugs I have made. It's pretty simple, just loop one into the other, it's pretty close to the knot you did to loop one into another to make it longer
I like the concept very much; however, if one of us steps on this, slides and falls on our tile floor, it could cause serious injury. I would like to make one, but I would need to figure out how to add a rubber backing so no one gets hurt. Otherwise, the trip hazard simply isn’t worth it to me, however practical and pretty it might be.
That is an important consideration. I only use this as a welcome mat by my front door, where it is on rough concrete that's not slippery. But certainly for indoor rugs, I have added a rubber non-slip mat underneath.
can you only use the hems for the starter rows ? or can you cut strips across the tshirt to get more ? another question is what happens if the tshirts are of different sizes and thus the long starter strips are of different lengths?
You can use anything you want in your rugs. As I mention in this video, I use the rest of the t-shirts to make a different kind of rug. You can see my video about that at ruclips.net/video/wAfpybicT1o/видео.html. For the starter strips, you are going to need to test to see what size of shirts work on the frame that you upcycle. In my case, a large adult shirt typically works well. But it would be different if the frame was larger / smaller. You can also just tie a warp thread like I do in the other video I reference.
Perhaps! I recommend checking with your local shelters to see what they recommend. It's quite a heavy mat so I'm not sure it is as helpful as perhaps a foam mat which also keeps its insulation when wet.
it reminds me of when i was a kid making potholders on that little metal square frame
Wonderful! And isn't it fun that you don't have to buy the loops or a loom, but instead reuse items that would normally get thrown out?
Haha, that's what I was thinking, too. From the 1960's, and I would talk around the neighborhood and sell them for 25c each. There was a tool I used to pull the loops through. Why aren't you @trashmagination using one? Good job on the rugs, too.
@@annwithaplan9766 I think if you watch the video, you'll see it's faster to just lift every second loop than to use the tool.
