Trashmagination

Добавлен 15 май 2014
Trashmagination is about art made from recycled materials. My name is Carla and I upcycle mostly t-shirts, neckties and upholstery samples using weaving, quilting and embroidery. From 2016-2020, I hosted a podcast about creative reuse of materials. You can find the audio from those episodes here. In the past, I shared my love of creative reuse at community events. I would help people make crafts from plastic milk jugs and plastic caps, including an igloo made from milk jugs which we called the Jugloo. I have been making recycled art since 1989. I'm originally from eastern Canada (Newfoundland and Nova Scotia) and now live in Virginia, USA.
Sea Cucumber T-shirt Quilt
This quilt is a collaboration between my son, my mom and me. My son wrote a short story about a sea cucumber which inspired my mom to paint him a t-shirt with a sea cucumber. It is a beautiful painting, but we were sure it would get damaged in the wash. So I made it into a quilt.
This project might inspire you to make a quilt from a favorite t-shirt!
My name is Carla Brown. I'm a creative reuse artist and I share my art under the name Trashmagination.

Upcycled Necktie Quilt - Triangles - English Paper Piecing (EPP)
Просмотров 4935 месяцев назад
One of my goals when making quilts is to use up scraps. The goal with this quilt was to use up the scraps from my two previous navy blue necktie quilts. It is my first triangle necktie quilt using English paper piecing techniques. I make these quilts without glue to avoid creating the plastic trash associated with glue. If you are new to making quilts from upcycled neckties, I teach how to prep...
Upcycle Plastic Milk Jugs into an Igloo Playhouse - Without Glue
Просмотров 3535 месяцев назад
This video tells the story of how my family built an igloo for a Maker Faire in 2019 from about 400 plastic milk jugs. We got the jugs from our local Starbucks stores. Most people who have done this before achieved the structure by using a lot of hot glue. We wanted to make a design that we could build, take apart, and put up again in another location, so hot glue was not an option. That's why ...
Weave a Fluffy Rug from T-shirts
Просмотров 57 тыс.6 месяцев назад
If you have a lot of unwanted t-shirts, this is a great way to make a super-soft fluffy rug from them. I have an online course that goes into more detail about this method, but this tutorial should be enough to help a lot of people get going. However, if you have a lot of questions after watching this, you could check out the course at: trashmagination.thinkific.com/courses/fluffy-rug-weaving I...
Upcycled Kite - Year of the Dragon Quilt

Flute Case from a PVC Tube
Просмотров 39510 месяцев назад
I play an instrument called a fue or shinobue with my taiko group. The fue are made from bamboo and need to be handled carefully. I can't quickly buy a replacement if they were broken and they are also expensive. I needed to make sure that my fue would be safe in my bag, which can sometimes be squished between all our other gear. I made this case using a PVC tube as the protection. If you need ...
Refresh Chair Seats with Upcycled Denim

Are your chairs looking a little scruffy? I made new seat covers for two of our dining room chairs from upcycled blue jeans. Also, when I took off the old torn cover, one of the chair seats was actually broken, so check out how we repaired it. My name is Carla Brown. Wedding Quilt Refresh with Upcycled Denim
Просмотров 505Год назад
When I made my wedding quilt in 1997, I had no quilt training. The quilt was not well constructed and I didn't even like the color palette! I dis-assembled it not long after that. In 2020, I remade the portion which was a portrait of me and my husband with a new denim background. In 2023, I took the pink squares and made them into small doll quilts and storage cubes. I hope this inspires you to...
Upcycling Tent into Play Mats
Просмотров 330Год назад
My son had a play tent. Over time, the plastic tubes got bent. I unstitched the panels to upcycle them. I made three play mats or wall hangings. For the batting, I had a sleeping bag with a broken zipper. You can get a lot of beautiful batting from a sleeping bag! It was very soft and a nice weight. One challenge of this project is that the tent fabric is a synthetic type that you might find on...
Upcycled Neckties Quilt - Modern Pattern
Просмотров 580Год назад
This quilt is a complementary project to my previous necktie upcycling video (ruclips.net/video/1PGm83c1B80/видео.html) from hexagon shapes. The hexagons used the wider sections of the ties, and this design upcycles the narrow sections of the ties. Plus I get to incorporate some pastel and gem color neckties, which are too rare to make into a whole quilt, but get to be the stars in this design....

Broken Crayons and Dried-Out Markers Recycling: Trashmagination Episode 22
my grandma used to make these in the great depression years. and she even made them big enuff to use as quilts/blankets to keep warm in the wjnter colder months in nj. life was super hard but. she found ways to make money and also to make things out of nothing to make her life easier. her and grandpa lived in what was called cold water flats no heat or electricity or hot water. they were the cheapest places to live. so grandma did what she had to do in order to survive those hard yrs. her and grandpa got those ration boxes of food the govt gave put. and made many many meals and recipes out of the food from those boxes. she was a very smart woman
These would make great gifts for the homeless so they at least had cloth between themselves and the ground and are probably lightweight too! Love this!
I appreciate your sentiment, but I do not think these are the best options for people who are homeless. They are not waterproof, and they are very heavy. I camp often in cold weather and this would not protect me from the ground suitably. A foam pad is a much better option for being lightweight and waterproof.
@@trashmagination1000 Could you hot glue or use fabric glue and a foam pad to the back?
Love it ❤
Your mom's t-shirt painting was so lovely!!
Yes she is a super talented painter!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
It is sad that there are no video or photos with this! At least add some rotating pictures perhaps? I love your other videos.
Thanks for your enthusiasm! In the description, I link to the blog where you can see photos - trashmagination.com/fairy-gardens-from-recycled-materials/. I would like to make videos for all my podcasts, but it takes a lot of time! Also, when I'm talking about other people's work, I would have to get rights to their images. As such, this is what I can do right now. The other consideration is that I make videos for the most popular topics, and unfortunately this one is not very popular. :( I wish you the best in your creative reuse adventures!
Love this!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS!!! I'M GOING TO TRY A RUG! HUGS FROM UTAH. Are you tieing a square knot, or just tieing the same way twice??
I am tying a square knot. I am a Scout leader so my hands just tie those. :) Hooray for your enthusiasm!
This is very cool, I want to make one now! Than k you for a great and informative video!!
Thanks for watching!
Loved watching your process and hearing your clear explanations throughout. But the highlight for me was the constant birdsong in the background -- wonderfully organic accompaniment to the creative process! 🐦
Yes I certainly didn't consider the birdsong when making the video, but many people have mentioned it! It is rare that I have the right weather to work outside, but I hope I can do it again in the future based on everyone's comments!
Some make them into mats for the homeless.
Yes although I would check with your local shelter. I don't actually think these mats provide a lot of insulation against the cold ground. I am a Scout leader and I think a foam mat would provide more insulation, more waterproofing and would be much lighter.
Nice video! I have never made a rug, but you make it look like fun! The only thing I need is a loom or I can have hubby craft one up for me.
All the best with your loom efforts! I do think upcycling a frame is the easiest option!
May I send/donate to you some socks?
I'm sorry no - I have too many with my own family - I can barely keep up with that! Some textile recycling organizations take socks though - you could ask but one that comes to mind is Retold Recycling - www.retoldrecycling.com/.
I love it! I always have t-shirts and socks with holes or no matches.
Love ❤
Could use for a dog bed too...stich 2 together with a pad in the middle. Washable!
I wish you were my neighbor. You seem like so much fun.
What a sweet comment! I bet you are fun too!
I love this idea. Practical and environmentally friendly. ❤
Thank you for watching!
Does it matter if it's cotton or acrylic?
No - I have used both kinds of socks - good question!
Very good tutorial. Lovely work!
Thanks for watching!
The finished product is so beautuful! This just showed up on my feed. Now I think i may try one!
Wonderful! Good luck!
Great video, thank you so much.
Truly this is such a fantastic idea. You are really good at explaining and showing all of the steps in a way that really makes everything clear. Excellent quilt binding tutorial as well - I loved watching this, thank you for making these!
Thank you for the compliment! Thanks for watching!
Thank you lady xx❤❤
Thank you for sharing! Great idea.
Instead of tying off around the screw, tie the end in a loop and then you can just slip them off :) Love the idea for this rug - might have to make one!
Glad this came up in my feed! I need to make a rug and runner for our bedroom and was originally thinking of doing a rope rug from old jeans, but I think that will be too much work. Cutting the loops and weaving just looks so much easier and faster! Also, now I know what to do with all the old socks and t-shirts - one only needs so many rags, lol!
I use t-shirt yarn to make dog toys to donate to shelters. Anyway, I found a way to recycle all those leftover seams from the armpits and side seams. I use a hand cordage method to twist the seams together to make a unique and colorful cordage/yarn. 😊
Your instructions are very clear. Thank you. I love the fabric trim around the edge idea. Brilliant! And that pocket too!
Wonderful! Thanks for the compliments!
❤️now I have to start saving bags 😊
Love this ❤ ThankYou
Beautiful Rug ❤
fabulous love your channel
😂😂😂 Kamala Harris is the only person I've ever heard say Ven Diagram before! Glad THAT'S out of the usual realm now!!! Thank you for this tutorial! I'm going to subscribe check out more of your videos!!!❤❤❤
Question, are you only using the hem edge or also including the body of the tshirt? Just subscribed! Thank you
For this craft, I am using the hemlines, cuffs and collars. That's because it is a complementary craft to my other rug type, which is a fluffy rug. My priority is fluffy rugs - those are my preferred crat to make. You can learn about fluffy rugs at ruclips.net/video/wAfpybicT1o/видео.html. The reason I started making this type of rug was to use up the leftovers from fluffy rugs and make both crafts zero waste. Make sense?
Why do You go 2 ×s a row before tying on fluffys could You go 3 or 4 ×s across??
I think you are asking why I alternate fluffies with a more typical weaving? It's because I want a very densely woven fluffy rug. But you could do it in a different ratio and see what you think!
So much work 😢
I guess it depends on your definition of work. For me, making things is not work - it's relaxation, it's joy, it's meditation, it's the meaning of life! But if it is work for you, perhaps it is not the right craft for you.
You’re very descriptive. Great tutorial.
Thank you for the compliment!
I would think on a gentle cycle they could be washed, is that true? As a funny craft for recycling, my uncle many years ago was in a care facility for people with tuberculosis. They had so much time on their hands they wove anything! I have a frame he made from cigarette packets! It's really pretty and you need to look twice to see what it is. He did quit smoking then.
Wow - what a cool way to upcycle! Anyhow, you certainly could try to wash them on a gentle cycle. You could also (obviously) put them in a bathtub and handwash, but people tend to want something fast and intense! :)
This was very educational and beautifully explained. Thank you for taking the time to make this video and sharing it with the world. I do plan on using this method to recycle some of our old shirts.
Thank you for the kind comment!
How many tshirts would you say it takes to make this rug? I know there are different shirt sizes etc but would you have a ball park figure? I love this technique! Thank you for sharing and the inspiration!
I would say about 50 Adult large shirts but as you noted, there are many reasons why that could be more or less.
Thank you for this wonderful video ! So well done ❤
Could you use an I bolt at the end to make it easier to weave?
I find it very easy to weave with my fingers but you can try whatever works for you!
I have started making bags out of ties and I use the. Interior stabilizing from the ties as batting in the bags. I sew the interior pieces together to be able to create batting for the bad
Great idea!
Is it possible to make your rug the size of your loom but add them together? Like you would granny squares possibly?
You certainly could try! Let me know how it goes!
Do you use a wire to help Keeps the loops on each side? I find it's helps to keep the loop on each side...
Unfortunately I don't understand your question?
@trashmagination1000 you said, you leave loops on each side. My grandma used a heavy wire on the sides so she didn't forget the loops.
@ Oh! Now I understand! Yes I actually talk about that in a different video - ruclips.net/video/wAfpybicT1o/видео.html. Yes you can put a dowel or a wire to remind you to leave the loop. I don't need to do that anymore because I have done a lot of weaving.
@trashmagination1000 Awesome 👍
I love this idea. 👍 I have so much yarn it's ridiculous. And now I know what I'm gonna do with part of it. 😊
Thanks for watching!

Been looming rugs out of upcycled t shirts for years!! 😊 durable and wash and dry great!
