@@isf4801 Not correct. It still uses dual pump system but with pilot clutch added. Pilot clutch has a ball-cam mechanism (ramps) which makes the system faster reacting but it doesn't keep any 35% preload.
Not really sure what the issue is with 4 gen AWD. Have read dozens of comments herewith. Supposedly two main reasons for 4 gen low performance are: 1) AWD system's software/firmware, and 2) clutch pack is weaker as compared to 3 gen. I used to own 3 gen of 2006, 2.4 litres, US edition. My first crossover. Loved it indeed. It had about 175 000 miles on clock when I decided to sell it. It ran fine, ageing anyways though. Engine would be not that silent when cold only. Now I own 4 gen. 2.4. It is known that this gen 2.4 engine is a bit different: torque slightly higher as well as HP. Power steering is electrical, not hydraulic. I think electrical steering saves a bit of power and this is one of the reasons why 4 Gen takes off a bit easier. I like the 4 Gen's performance more. On the highway the RPM is less at the same speed. As for the relative off-road capacity: drove 4 Gen to mountain ski camp on a slippery road. Driving was confident, no issues with slipping. In the city as well - setting off on an icy road uphill from the traffic light as if on a dry surface. Also noticed on 4 Gen the Stabilization system working when driving on icy road. Never noticed the same on Gen 3. Btw, on Gen 4 I am using the same winter tires I had on Gen 3 (kept them when sold the 3 Gen:)). They are Maxxis SS-01 Presa SUV. They are now 5+ y o, still grip quite well.
From my research - it's not about software and not about the clutch-pack, which is the same as in gen 3. The reason is the size of rear diff - it is way smaller than in gen 4. There were a few versions of it but none is able to hold high torque without falling into pieces.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers cannot disagree) Anyways, what is important to remember is that CRV is in no way an off-roader, I believe. In my case both Gens have always coped with the road situations they were intended for.
Q: Is there any drivetrain tuning that can be done to make the 4th gen better off-road? The prices of that vehicle on my market are decent, the car has most things I need and there is a limited choice of reliable older SUVs on my market. I will use it for hunting in the winter. I will obviously have good tires on but still, this video makes me worried. The car will be parked on the side of the road so this type AWD test will be done all the time ;) I was thinking about Forester but CVT, head gasket and the way the company deals with manufacturing mistakes put me off from the brand...

i really want to know is the awd no use? i mean the up to the 2022 5th gen model..could at tires remedy this?
AWD system in 5th gen works very well. Tires do not influence the test.
The Old Dual Pump system seems to transfer enough torque to the rear axle (2 rear wheels with enough traction), and the reaction is fast but the traction control doesn't seem to transfer enough torque to the rear wheel with traction. Traction Control limitation or overall, not enough torque to the rear axle ?
I think that's combination of both.
Traction control on these models is not the fastest to react and yeah the torque is limited. I might be wrong, but i think i read some data saying it's up to 40%.
@@RTI_MD In 5th generation the system can send 57% more torque to the rear (what gives 40% of engine torque) than in 4th.
I was referring to 3rd gen, which the original comment was on too. Max 40% of the torque could be sent to the rear axle
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers Yes, i also think that. There is an interesting thing ; the difference in behavior of the ESP. On Gen 3th and Gen 4th, the Traction Control seems to be at 100% dependant of the ESP, but on Gen 5th, no. The Traction Control funtion continues to work as it's an independant system (it's possible on some other cars ; mercedes ML w163 ETS + EPS, Land Rover ETC + DSC, etc.) .

From an Engineer's POV, the 2013 model was tested in a dusty area,
when dust and sand particles accumulate on steel rollers traction will decrease hence it will be very hard for the tires to have contact with the rollers.

I am really disappointed in my 3rd gen 2011, previously i owned two gen 2 petrol and diesel and they both pulled my caravan out of slippery situations i.e. muddy fields, my gen 3 2011 goes no where. I have been researching if there is a problem with the rear differential.

@4:50 - no 2007 traction on test. No 2013 test. No brake lock control in the rear? Or maybe ~50% max power to the rear axle is too little?
4:50 is 2007. Not enough braking force on the rear. 2013 wasn't tested cause it failed the test with two rollers at front.
@@4x4.tests.on.rollers - I skipped to the more "challenging" parts. The issue with 4th generation AWD is well documented ( www.carthrottle.com/post/attention-all-honda-owners-your-4x4-crv-might-not-be-a-4x4-after-all/ ). Honda's response was lame.
@@tocrob Yes, I remember that story. In fact Honda admitted that awd clutch-pack of 4th gen would fall into pieces under load. In 5th gen they changed that and now it can hold 57% more torque. So they also proved that their response was pure babble.

Why didn't the rear wheels engage at 3:01?
They did but there was not enough torque sent to the back in order to push the car.
Honestly I wouldn’t ever take my CRV off road or expect it to get me out of tough situations... it’s a glorified car on stilts basically. I like it cause I don’t have to bend over to put in car seats for my kid and easy to get in and out of.
I use my crv 3gen in heavy conditions this car very reliable and stable on country side roads, and farmers roads pretty good handle and comfort suspension, but my crv was on manual transmission (2,0).
The earlier Gens are better at AWD. These are just light snow and rain. Honda's main selling point is safety and reliability.

The 2010 (facelift/restyle model) with a 2.2 i-dtec, diesel engine, is a bit more reactive due to higher torque. But generally this display is accurate.
No, you're not right. CRV 3Gen has a mechanical drive based on the hydraulic principle in the rear differential.
@@tomasj.2651 Not right regarding to what aspect? I know what system does 3rd have, owning and driving one for 9 years. If you read attentively, I was saying that the 2010 facelift is a bit more reactive than the 2007 one, having more torque...
@@tomasj.2651 The 3rd generation all-wheel drive system uses a ball clutch that gives a preload of 35%.
@@RTI_MD facelift has not changed the awd system.

It doesn't work perfect, it doesn't move just like in the video you saw (I believe it was Teknikens Varld).
The car will be parked on the side of the road so this type AWD test will be done all the time ;)
