I love your videos and all the pragmatism that goes with them. Im trying to watch them all. I must say though, this is not your most pragmatic. Im not going to buy all this stuff just to insert these things. But, you did bring to my attention the need to come up with a way of doing this that is accurate.

Very good info Kevin. But yes very specific to your lathe set up. I've just set up my own system with a self centering dowel jig and a bushed insert to go into the mortice. I'll be doing some video of that for anyone interested in that system. Beau Hannam has video of his set up, which is what I copied somewhat for my set up.

Your machinery may be specific to your shop, but the ideas are inspirational, IMO. Thanks, Kevin.

Wow! Very impressive! Probably executed in a manner quite a bit beyond the tolerances or craftsmanship required... No joke, you're doing it as well as it can be done; Antonio would be impressed! 🎻

Awesome setup. Very nicely done and clearly reasoned.
I continue to build my ukuleles with the Spanish heel as the neck is aligned with the top. No neck attachment joint to tool for, but trickier to apply finish at the neck-body joint. Some day I may put on big boy pants and attempt a bolt on neck, but not quite yet…

Very helpful insights there. One option I am considering experimenting with is using cross dowel barrel nuts. Still figuring out how to make it super accurate.

That would be a great lathe for turning banjo rims with the cross slide.

Those cross slides can be found sometimes. Maybe you'll find one.

That wood lathe set up is totally tricked out. Nice.

That's a very interesting technique. Sadly there no chance I'm putting that lathe in my garage.

Interesting. So now I know why trying to install brass inserts by hand, with a wrench, was a complete failure. They got out of alignment and chewed up the tenon; I ended up having to redo the neck entirely. (A little surprising, as I've used brass inserts in other projects without trouble.) Used barrel nuts for the new one and that worked fine.

If your inserts are not in perfect alignment, make the holes in the neck block to correspond.

Kevin when you flood the area with CA glue, how do you be sure to keep it out of the inner threads of your insert?

It's nearly impossible to keep the CA glue out of the interior threads, but i remedy that by just running a 10-24 tap through the insert after everything cures; cleans it right out.

How about the other end of the business? The neck block?

Sorry, I do not produce any of my tools or patterns for sale, only the finished guitars.
