Troubleshooting a hard starting series 60

- Customer bought this truck not running with seized/bent valves. I did the cylinder head and now it is hard starting.
There was some tests that I didn’t film, one of which I should have, I put a barbed fitting on the suction line of the pump with a hose going into a jerry can of diesel and ran it off that (eliminates the fuel suction lines) it seemed to run well with that, hence putting in new suction lines.

Round of applause for the starter👍😝
I could smell the starter and feel the heat coming off it , for sure than was not an MT - 39 !
Thank you sir . Occasionally in south Louisiana we experience freezing temperatures for several days in a row.. I have always managed to get my 12.7 to bust off with a little help from ether , applying air pressure to the tanks, etc. etc. For the last couple days I tried all my old tricks to no success, only dead batteries... I watched your video last night and this morning 27° I pulled my pump and used your idea to spin the fuel pump with a cordless impact.. I new what needed to happen but your idea got me there.. Spent 20 minutes and was blowing smoke... Thank you.. I will figure out the reason it lost prime on a warmer day. It had sit for over a week.
Great! Could be the check valve shown in this video
Best tribal of all time in any survivor series ive ever seen. All hail king George.
If that owner doesn’t want to put fuel in this truck good luck getting payed. Hope it works out for you
Well the truck doesn’t leave till it is and I am not afraid to go and disable it on a guy if they don’t pay. Haha
Great video.
Yeah I made one of those weed sprayers too. They work great
At the compressor is a slip joint that could be your problem. My 60 series went thru 3 of them in 2 months.
Replace the trs and srs sensor those are your timing sensors without the trs won't start
Could there also be a problem in the suction line? Like a crimp or a air leak?
There was that’s why I changed fuel lines. Didn’t film it but I put a fitting in the pump and ran a short hose to a jerry can of diesel and ran it off that. Started and ran fine like that.
@PrairieMechanic do remember what type of pipe fitting you used in for the fuel pump
Thank you for the video is very important
But why you don’t use ET CATERPILLAR
Because this is not a CAT. I would need to use my Detroit program however the data link connector for hooking up to has no power to it so I would have to diagnose that before I could hook up.
I. Think there is the fuel pressure valve missing behind the head …
Do you happen to have part numbers for those fuel adapter fittings? Thank you
I need to make a weed sprayer like that I have the same issue losing prime if truck sits to long
I had new lines made and one of them sucked air on the new $80 fitting
💯
What’s the name of that bit you used to spin the fuel pump?
It’s a home made tool using an old drive coupler. I think I mentioned it in this video
You are pulling the battery voltage down too much so the trouble codes happen. Open up the pump and look for worn out.
What was the fix? Pump + lines + valve?
That ended up being what I did but I’m thinking the lines were the worst of it.
This truck has always primed hard tho. They ran it out of fuel once long after this job and I went to it. Had to prime with the weed sprayer because it wouldn’t prime on its own
Once primed it stays running fine but doesn’t like to prime up.
is it possible to test the fuel pressure via the fitting you connected the weed primer to? hope that makes sense
It’s like a check valve actually ….
My detroit 12.7 fired up not even turning over three times and fire every time since rebuild ......
put a raptor"air dog" 100 gph fuel pump on it to push fuel to the water separator.
mine had same problem. After it got the extra push of fuel it ran better than ever and had more power. Been that way 2 year. If you dont mind the hummm noise the pump makes as youre driveing It a easy $ 315.00 fix
Ya I’m not a huge fan of doing that as it seems like more of a bandaid fix to have to ad something that the manufacturer didn’t see a need to instal but in this situation your right it would make a very big difference. But it starts and runs good now
Bad Ecm?!
Understanding the fuel tanks are low ( not empty ) should not have anything to do with it . A properly operating lift pump still will have enough suction to draw fuel out of the fuel tank . The fuel pump only spins about 1250 RPM’s 5/24/23
Put a lot of time and money into a $6k truck
@@bryanritts213 as the saying goes - nothing more expensive than a cheap truck.
Money pit !
I had issues with my Detroit if it ran out of fuel. The pump can’t draw fuel from the tank like my Cummins could. You have to prime the fuel lines and the filters😳
