Did we miss any of the most popular boat types?

You mean other than sailboats? :) Essentially 3 basic hull types: Racing, cruising, and multihull. Within those are open, fully decked, partially decked, cuddy cabin, and full cabin. Regarding sail rig, over 90% are what is called "Marconi Rig" with triangular Main and Jib. Gaff rigs have a quadrangular main sail and an extra boom (like a "Schooner"), and "Cat Boats" have a gaff main with the mast very far forward. A Cutter Rig, also rare, sports 2 Jibs in the front overlapping and a main. Yawls and Ketches have smaller second Mizzen Masts; Yawl behind the cockpit, Ketch in front of it. "Auxiliary Racers" are mostly cruisers that race for fun (sometimes with a taller mast than usual and slightly different hull form for speed which is a compromise with interior cabin space). Catamarans and Trimarans have 2 or 3 hulls. They are generally faster, but less maneuverable (and usually more expensive to dock because of the width). Trimarans have more cabin space but are a little slower than catamarans which are considered the fastest sailing craft (some capable of over 20 knots).
Then there is another classification regarding the keel; Deep Keel is the classic sailing boat with a deep draft, usually with lead ballast in it. Centerboards, Swing Keels, and Dagger Boards are sliding keels going up or down that allow the boat to come into shoal waters and shallower docking areas. Many of these types have Water Ballast which is a large water tank in the bilge to keep the boat stabile under sail when filled. This saves a lot of weight when empty, allowing boats of up to 26' to weigh as little as 2,500 lbs on a trailer.

In my opinion, Cuddy Cabin with outboard motor is the most useful all-around boat. Great for fishing with 4 people, big enough for off-shore, room for someone to get out of the sun or the weather, portable toilet, walk-around to the bow, sleeps 2 easily, small enough to tow with any vehicle, etc.

Other than the outboards I agree. We like to anchor at a bar or beach and outboards on the transom are just in the way.

All these different boat types explained all have one thing in common: They can all be privately owned, similar to how an individual can privately own their own car.
Now, there are other kinds of vessels, such as commercial vessels like passenger vessels, and then the big, large, and hefty freighter vessels.
It's like a Highway system. The privately owned boats are like the cars. The Passenger vessels are like the busses and public transportation systems, and the freighters & cargo vessels are like the semi-trucks.

Hello, brand new to boating and really looking to get educated on the best type of boat for my family. I really appreciate the brief yet concise information you presented in this video and was hoping to hear about any recommendations you could make for me. We are a small family of 3; however, if we add in the grandparents and kiddos we can easily become a party of about 10 people. We've rented pontoon boats that are fun and definitely spacious for lake use, but we are also interested in acquiring a vessel that could be used in open waters (for example trips to Catalina). Activities for the kids involve pulling them on tubes or rafts but that may progress to skiing later in the future. I've been drawn to the aesthetics of the Bowriders, Cuddy Cabins, and Pontoons but have no idea on what kind of engine specs to look out for with the most straightforward maintenance. I appreciate all of your help and guidance, and I look forward to exploring your other videos you have made available. Thank you again! 🙂 Happy Boating... Oh I also forgot to mention, that I would like to buy a previously owned boat first.

At this one lake in france where we used to go on vacation when I was a kid many people had small boats that never left that lake. I always really liked them. Tthey where very unique in size. They had cabins with windows in the front but at the same time those boats were realy tiny. I always wondered how they would feel like inside and if those cabins were for sleeping or only couch area. The boats where like 5m long and 2m wide. the controls where cramped to the side to make space for a realy small door in the middle to the cabin. The biggest one of them was called Quicksilver 510.

I’m torn between a deck boat and a pontoon. We are a family of 8 but usually bring a couple friends, so we need a 12 passenger boat. For watersports, all we really care about are tubing and kneeboarding. Don’t need a wake setup. But we always hang out in the desert and it’s 110+ degree so a large Bimini top is crucial. Which would you recommend?
