  • Challenge Rules:
    - I can only use my starter in battle.
    - No items in trainer battles except held items.
    - No glitches, exploits, or RNG manipulations.
    First playthrough:
    - No Double Team, Substitute until level 100
    - 0 IVs across the board
    - Cheating for information is acceptable as a last resort
    Second Playthrough:
    - All bets are off. Complete the game as fast as possible
    - Max 31 IVs unless pursuing Hidden Power
    - I will be playing these runs at 4x game speed
My footage will be edited to give what I consider a better viewing experience. This includes making cuts, fades, and adjusting the speed of the footage to match my commentary.
I use a software called "PKHeX" to edit my starter, setting things like it's Nature, and IVs to be perfect 31s, or marginally reduced to give specific Hidden Power typing to optimize strategy. All of the Pokémon I use are 100% attainable in the base game. The software allows me to create my "perfect" egg Pokémon in a much shorter timeframe.
PKHeX also allows me to set my Pokédex total to max after the Round 1 Elite 4. A requirement of Round 2 is catching 60 species and I am only interested in the potential of the Pokémon that I'm running instead of my ability to catch Pokémon optimally.

It is a bit of a shame that the 0 ivs was met with negative response. I think it makes a lot of sense with your 2 playthrough style. Maybe i should have been more vocal about that in the other runs.oh well the middle of the road 15 ivs isn't a bad idea either

@@EggsceptionalI get why you ran Zeros, but it did seem wildly punishing. If you want to keep to the spirit of "a bad version to show that any mon could do this" versus "let's turn the dials to 11," maybe turn the first run of IVs to 10ish instead of 15s for your first run?

  • @MisterVictini

This format seems pretty interesting, curious to see what you go with in the end. I think it makes more sense that if one of the pair is knocked out, it’s a reset, it really emphasizes that they need each other, plus, you won’t have to worry about your HM Pokémon coming into battle because you’d just reset anyway.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

That's a fair point! I feel like the dependency might be something more fun to explore in theme runs, like NidoKing can't let his Queen fall. But in a run like this, where one Pokémon clearly exists to support the other, it became incredibly difficult to keep Diddy alive. Definitely food for thought! Thanks :)

I like the idea of if one of the duo survives the fight its not a reset that mon came in clutch for his partner let em keep the Dub. As for HM friends they should either be boxed prior to the gym battle or u use bad moves that wont affect the outcome of the match

    • @Eggsceptional

Thanks for your input! I agree with boxing the HM cheerleaders. I was trying to work it out during the premiere, but I think that only Lt. Surge, and Erika will needs Cut 'mons to be in the party. Usually that's Meowth, so hopefully something like Growl doesn't impact things too much. Cheers :)

  • @thebasedjarrod
    @thebasedjarrod 7 месяцев назад +4

I think the HM cheerleaders, if they come out, should probably just resort to using "garbage" moves that don't influence the battle, since the point is to look at the Pokémon you're highlighting in the video. And also, resetting only after both faint seems like a good idea. You already are doing that, so...nice. :)

I think the only reason people didn’t like the 0 IV runs was because they want to see their favorites actually succeed and do cool stuff, but since the second run is mainly cut to the endgame they can’t see it. I don’t mind either way
-If you did a dozen more of these duo runs no one would be mad and it’d be a really cool niche too. Tailow/Treecko would be a very hype one too.

This was a lot of fun! I loooove doubles, the strategies can get so wild. And this duo was super fun. As a tip for exp in doubles: in Colosseum speedruns, the EXP Share is used to split 75:25 when needed. That also helps keeping most EXP with your surviving mon in case HM friends get sent out. No idea where it is in FR though so I don't know if that helps.

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

The XP share is something that you get from Prof Oak's aides. I think 50 caught species is the requirement so that may likely be something that I hack if I choose to use it. Thank you for your input! I loved making this one, I'm eggscited to eggsplore the format further :)

The one thing I think many forget about Medicham, is it does have a higher defense stat than it's attack stat. But there's the kicker, if you get that stat set up, you can use power trick to switch your defense and attack and suddenly Pure Power Medicham goes crazy :3

As for the format, I really loved watching the difference between 0 ivs and 31 ivs. I even I like running with 15ivs or 7dv , because it give you a pretty good idea what kind results could you get when running with a random ivs Pokemon, because getting 0 or 31 ivs is really hard by reseting for a good starter.😊

For the HM users, an idea would be to have them be Fainted prior to the battle? That way they can't tank any attacks from the opponents Pokemon from them attack them instead of the surviving front-liner. The three ways I can think to have them faint would be:
1.) Cheat in them knowing Selfdestruct/Explosion on one of their moves (assuming they have an available slot) then just fight wild Pokemon with them to knock them out.
2.) I don't know if this is even possible but, just cause them to "faint" via code somehow
3.) Actually battle wild Pokemon till they faint
Option 2, if it's actually possible, would obviously be the fastest with Option 3 being the slowest but not requiring any adjustment to the game. Option 3 would punish teams that need to heal more at Pokecenters as every time you heal, you'd have to make them faint again but that could cause more strategy to try and improve their times. Option 1 is the perfect middle of fast but require adjusting the game. You'd still have to purposely faint your HM users but it won't take anywhere quite as long.
As for a potential pair, my vote would go to Alakazam and Machamp. The Brawns and the Brain :P

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

I like that idea! I've had a lot of different suggestions, but simply having them knocked out seems to be the easiest. I can still use their HM moves after all while they're fainted. I can also battle 1 optional trainer in each gym to knock them out if they happen to be conscious for the next leader. Great suggestion, thank you!
I've added the brawn and brains to the list :)

I really liked this run! I've been playing Colosseum runs, a game entirely made with double battles in mind, and it's been a ton of fun! I really wanna use Slaking Skill Swap strats someday and I think its best partner is a Flying-type, either Xatu, Noctowl or Butterfree. They all learn Skill Swap and are immune to his Earthquakes, which in Gen 3 doubles is a devastating move. Compound Eyes Slaking might be fun while using 100% accurate Fire Blast.
Edit: also, I went through the same problems you did with deciding whether one of the mons fainting would be a fail or not. I decided that whenever this happens I'm going to count it as an event called "singularity". So it doesn’t fail the run, but it’s another metric to consider.

It really seemed like you were having a blast in this one! Some fun ideas for future doubles runs could be Seviper and Zangoose or maybe Mew and Mewtwo could be fun if you want to do a run with legendaries.
for what to do with HM slaves, I would say put them in the box before major battles if you can. (the only one where that might not be possible are the gyms you need cut to complete)
As for using 0 IVs for the first run, I could tell how frustrated you were getting with it and I was getting secondhand frustrated on your behalf! You should do what’s fun for you. I think the 15 average IVs is a good middle ground.

    1) If you faint the support mons you can avoid the problem, though boxing might be faster.
    2) Unless you did something about it, XP will be a problem on these runs. If it wouldn't be an insane amount of added work, I would almost say double the mons for each trainer, but I don't think base Gen 3 would allow for a double battle with 10 mons on one side.
    3) I would recommend Serebii for move sets. It is very obvious what Gen you have selected.
    4) I wanna see Umbreon and Espeon. Wes (Colleseum) is my favorite Pokemon protagonist and those are his 'starters'. Probably won't be a great run, but it shouldn't be miserable either.

    Good run,
I didnt mind that you gave medicham skill swap,
    but earthquake was mean.
Also you wouldnt have to think about surf if you just benched your hm-slaves before major battles, similar to the league
oh, plusle + minun could be cute for this, or illumise + volbeat, or a rival-frindship of zangoose + seviper? zangoose + seviper could be an extra challenge if you aim to always have one of them faint before a major battle ende, that would put a little emphasis on their feud (although it could make the run harder)

I like the suggestion! Boxing before the league is a must, but I've also liked the suggestion of simply keeping the cheerleaders fainted in the party. Then I can use them without interference in battle.

Oh my, just a couple of days ago I was thinking to myself, it would be super interesting to see former vs. runs come back as teams and see how their time compares to the solo runs! For a proper and fair comparison though, I feel you'd need to go vanilla, so no double battles (I did enjoy the format here though!)
In regards to the support mons, I think giving them splash would be an option. They can still get targeted and "eat" a hit for the main runner, but I don't see a way to avoid that other than keeping them in the box, which would then cost extra time.
Also I agree, a single death on a duo shouldn't count as a reset. Maybe we could do an additional K.O.-counter? So Diddy goes down, it's 1 KO and 0 resets. Diddy and Donkey go down, it's 2 KOs and 1 reset. Something like that.
Finally, just to let you know in case you havent noticed, the ability and nature slots were switched on the layout. Loved the format otherwise, big props to you for putting in so much time and effort and for taking our feedback into consideration. It absolutely shows! Lots of love from Germany

Just a suggestion for the overlay, perhaps when displaying the moves, show only that in the overworld and leave stats/current moves for the battles since the latter is more relevant to the fights. Well, that or make it a toggle. My only concern is that there may be runs where it's one doing all the "heavy lifting" while the partner is technically not pulling their weight. If you are looking for ideas for pairs, I think you may find a few ones with pokemon designed to be pairs like the Nido lines, Hitmonchan/Hitmonlee, and Voltbeat/Illusmise for example. There are also a series of pokemon cards that work as a tagteam that may give a few ideas.

eggcellent sir, truly eggcellent. a little uneggspected though, I thought you'd be doing another starter or the legendary trio and the doubles run would be a next year job, but still I am most impressed you and Dan got it up and running so soon. it looked good and exactly as thought it would, just every battle with more than one Pokemon made into a doubles format. there is a bit to unpack with this one though
1st, the moveset on Medichamp, really should of looked into it more closely, find as you did, just checking the move itself and who learns it to be unreliable on Pokemon Database and checking the Pokemons specific set for the game its going to be played on to be much more reliable a source. fair enough you cheated it onto it, but I am now curious as to what you will do on any follow up. I figured you'd go with Slaking and I am glad you took my advice for something with skill swap and swapping truant for pure power was a stroke of genius (albeit an illegal one lol). will you go for something new with skill swap, a bulkier psychic type perhaps or will you go with the other option of having something with follow me so Slaking can be protected while it is, well........slaking, might also help if you plan to set up as well.
2nd. the leveling issue, I think we all forget about that. the doubles format might be one where taking all the optional battles available might be your best option in order to have the levels needed, failing that, you could cheat a little and make the experience yields doubled for doubles. this may also solve the damage issues of having all the moves that hit more than target having its damage halved like surf, earthquake and rock slide. having them lose power makes them less worth it to be, in doubles dig does more damage as an individual than earthquake does to 2 at once
sorry I missed the premiere, its been a long day, I do miss being in the chat while the run plays out for us. it was nice your girlfriend joined in and voiced along side you, again uneggspected, but I liked it, she seems nice, has a nice voice. I look forward to what you have planned for the next doubles battle, should be interesting what you give us based on what you learned here

I absolutely know that feeling! I may have started somewhere else, but Gen 3 definitely feels like my home gen. It's nice to explore SS as well, but there's a certain level of comfort I find in 3.
For sure! And steel is just such a great typing in Gen 3. It'll be interesting running a trio where all three of them are weak to Bruno as well. Steelix VS Regi who wins? And can the Regi then deal with a second, and 3 Fighting types?
That's fair enough, plus another redeeming feature of Onix is how good STAB Rock CAN be in the game. That's assuming I can even take advantage of it. Pineco will be one of those runs that I do when I'm ahead by a little bit and can take a short break after I think :P
I really wish I could have gotten into Scott's run. I totally would have found a way to get Substitute on Smeargle :P Not for the competitive time, but I mean... Substitute is kind of my thing.
That's the perfect attitude! Not liking everything that you do in a day I think is just a reality of jobs. The people you work with, and even serve are always the best parts. Sometimes also the worst!
That's fair! There are definitely some egg moves that feel like they make or break runs in the VS runs anyway. I suppose if I'm going for a bit more of a lax run, more focused on strategy than on speed.. Things to consider for sure! Bubble+Ice Beams would be a good combo, especially on a Bug.
That's true enough. I feel like a 0 reset run is a nice little swag thing, but there are runs where resets are almost guaranteed. Look at the crab battle lately. There wasn't a thing I could do early game if Bulbasaur decided to Sleep me and I stayed asleep. Nada. I like weighing the risk of a battle vs the time it takes to make it consistent. Though I know I don't always get that right..
For sure there a bit to unpack, but thank you! It was a really fun first crack at the format. I definitely will be relying more on bulbapedia for my information. There are an ungodly amount of ads, but the information seems to be much more thorough. Which clearly I need :P That's true. I would rather have a bit of fun exploring something that, although outside of the rules, was a ton of fun to showcase. Silly broken Donkey was sure a fun run at the end.
Also very fair points about the format. I don't think I'm into altering how the moves/xp operates in the game as I feel like that's just part of the challenge in the doubles format. Routing XP/EVs is going to be a different ballgame all together. They'll make for slower overall runs for sure, but I barely realized I'd been playing as long as I had when I hit the 3h mark in this one.
It's all good! Tis the season after all. She loved being involved, as did I. Everyone else seems to be loving it as well so far. It'll be fun to play with more creative ideas like this one in the future. But I have some beasts to run...

@@Eggsceptional 1st sorry for the late reply, I'm not getting notifications for anything for some reason.
Gen 3 is very much my home as well, it just feels right as a place to run especially for some variety, Gen 4 will different, I run it well, but it feels harder in places that shouldn't be hard.
Bruno may be a legit threat to the regis in the R1 and R2 and that dreaded mankey trainer on nugget bridge of course. all 3 being weak to fighting is bad, 2 being weak to steel isn't as bad as it sounds as Steelix is the only one you will face, but regice being weak to both as well as rock and fire and having worse defense may cause problems for you, the low speed of all of them might cause a lot of resets though, base 50 is never good.
the dual STAB of onix is brilliant, rock slide and earthquake is a solid combo with STAB but it will need the training behind for attack to make good use of them and of course the speed training for when it evolves to steelix. I have used one just like this and it works rather well on my sandstorm team. and yeah you might need a rest after pineco and fortress, not the easiest run regardless as to what game its on. fortress will struggle against Blaine and Charizard.
I think if you can find a Mr. Mime you can sketch it from there as Mime gets it via level up. in FR I think Sabrina's Mr. Mime has it and so does one of the trainers in her gym. I know you are biased for that move.
I hear that man, it can be very rough sometimes, I like the people I work with, in the past loved a few too, good times bad times all that bit.
with bugs, if its a boosting move, we both know its worth it, its a strong move or at least better STAB also worth it. with Masquerain you can kind have it all, I've had a pure beam move Masquerain that worked nicely, you'll get the same with Volbeat as it can have thunderbolt and tail glow, a unique combo in all of Pokemon. you have a lot of room for some fun and a little jank with the Gen 3 bugs, you'll love them like I do.
I'd say you're doing ok in finding some balance for consistency in your runs, at least in smoother runs as your frustration with some runs does seem to hinder that, shuckle for example and yes I know I am mentioning it again, but Parasect as well. and hell yes we like a bit of swag in Pokemon, its rare though.
yeah maybe stick with Bulbapedia for info like that or at least narrow down search on Database, I tend to look at specific Pokemons sets for individual games to really get it focused. I think the way you ran it was quite fine and fair considering it is a format you are trying to learn at the same time, as your SS jank with the team run. just got a lot to figure out with it 1st before getting the rules locked in.
I;d say on observation you take on half, maybe 2/3 of trainers in a standard run with one Pokemon for a permanent duo, you might need to take on everything for the sake of EV's and experience, either than or really farm for rare candies with the meowths or both as one helps the other I guess, but again its one of those things where you'll figure it out as you go along.
good news, Venomoth is done, I got through the game much quicker with it than I did with Butterfree or beedrill, it is just so much stronger and access to psychic via level up is much quicker than psybeam, the lack of a decent HP did slow it a little but HP dragon did help with Lance a little in the R1. I got the R1 league at a lower level and finished at a lower level too and same again for the R2. I didn't have access to dream eater or reliable sleep for the run though, but a stronger attack for silver wind and solarbeam and sunny day was more than enough.
I am now into my Parasect run. I have had to start with a Charmander as I can't catch a Paras before Brock and Charmander has a harder time against Brock much like Paras so seemed fair to me. good news and bad news on it already, I got a reset already to misty, but just one and good news its got a decently strong HP rock and good stats for its attack and special attack, its going to be interesting to see how this one plays out, I assume pain.

@@jptheflipper3825 I was honestly getting nervous thinking that my reply hadn't gone through! Sorry for my delay.. the beasts almost got me. Not from a run perspective but MAN I had a lot to talk about. It's finally rendering now while I catch up on everything else.
Agreed! Gen 3 home, with beautiful little adventures into Gen 4 now at then. Ahhh see? I almost forgot about that darn Mankey. You should have let it sit a while longer so I could have been caught with my pants down by him. Again.
Ahhh the good ol' 4x Fire weakness. How many Bugs suffer from that I wonder? The dual STAB Onix sounds nice, but when it's Steelix does STAB Iron Tail actually become useful? 75% accuracy though.. yuck.
      Biased?!?!? ME? Yeah. Probably :D
I'd say that not just on Bugs but any Pokémon more or less, if you have access to a boosting move, I'll likely be using it. I have an easier time dreaming up set up strats than like.. clever sequences of turns that require a specific outcome or reset.
The frustration does come out, and after running the beasts I feel like the routing was reasonably smoother. Smoother than the 0 IV runs anyway, but these are legendaries after all. I'll be interested in getting a broader cross section of runs in with the 15s.
Absolutely! I'm so happy too that everyone in the audience (for the most part) seems very willing and happy even to learn alongside me. Crazy to think though, that we're having these learning experiences in a game that many of us have played for almost 2 decades. And yes, at the very least I should be cross checking things with Bulbapedia if it feels too good to be true.
For sure! I don't feel like I was really getting in the groove of things with the runs on the channel for multiple videos, and that's in my home game of FireRed. There will definitely be some fun experiences in the doubles format, but there's lots to hammer out.
That's really cool! I'm glad to hear that you weren't needing to fall back on Sleep tactics for the victory. A small sneak peak at the beasts is that the Venonat line took me apart at one point. It was super rough :P
HP Rock is really nice at least on the Paras(ect). It's not going to help you too much obviously, until later, but at least it gives you some extra coverage. Stupid.. Paras... I'm glad you're enjoying it!

@@Eggsceptional don't worry about it, I think my RUclips is not handling all the notifications very well and that is why and I figured you were busy with the beasts, they look good but as you said in the livestream, they kinda run a certain way and have limits.
I will miss fire red and leaf green while I'm in sapphire and ruby, but I still got a few runs to do before that. that Mankey and poison seem to be the biggest threats you face in fire red and the R2 of course. low kick will get you a few times I think, the regis are heavy and slow after all, regirock might tank a hit though 200 base defense isn't too bad.
that 4x weakness hasn't come to bite me just yet thank the lord helix in the sky for that. I ran some numbers on onix and steelix with rock slide, at the same level and same EV's both do about the same damage as Steelix has nearly double the attack stat as Onix despite not having STAB. iron tail will have a use but it comes right at the end, once for Aerodactyl and once again for Tyranitar, the potential to get a KO on them is important.
very true, but I'd argue the bugs need it more, saying that Beedrill handled the R1 league without SD without any problems. I find going without boosting moves to make for interesting runs and an added challenge if the Pokemon I run is too good. I don't rout much, I sort of wing, I think you've said before you do the same for 1st runs, but how much for 2nd's?
yeah those 0 IV runs were rough, why do that to yourself? random IV's might of been a good way to go, keeps the 1st run as vanilla as possible after all. I do assume the beasts will be painful especially the 1st runs, I see Brock and Misty being big problems for all of them except Suicune and it having an early lead. you got to let the frustration out now and then, I noted a few coins added to your swear jar during the live stream for example, I am sure me mentioning Parasect caused at least one of them lol.
there is always something new to learn with these games, the amount I have learnt about Yellow from Scott is unbelievable. and I think we have all learned how to play Crystal from watching Scott and Squidgy. and I have picked up a trick or 2 from you for FR. we all have a lot to learn, if we all mastered it, there would be no challenges left to run
the doubles format is a new one and its not one we see often enough to know for sure what works best for it, but again it adds to the game and introduces something new for you to learn and for all of us as well. for doubles I'd go for thematic pairs, Nidos, the pika clones, maybe a few of ones you've used for doubles like the snakes or crabs. how about Muk and Swalot.
I knew Venomoth would do well, but not having the same options as Butterfree really held it back a little, compound eyes and dream eater would of been enough for it to be nearly perfect. before HP came along for my runs, my moveset of choice for Butterfree was always sleep powder, dream eater, solarbeam and silver wind, a good combo now and always and I would of had it for Venomoth if I could. I think below level 80 would of been possible for it if it was perfect and had a better HP though, you'll have to find that one out.
good news, Parasect is running well, I have gotten past Koga and Sabrina and so far only have 2 resets, once on Misty and once on Koga. Misty I could of avoided by evolving Paras sooner and Koga was mostly because Muk stacked too many acid armors and sludge does a lot when its coming off base 100 attack and is super effective after all, Blaine is the next challenge and I have one strat in mind, levels, lots of them, I have battled everyone in the game so far and will continue to do so, except for the Charizard trainer in victory road of course. I believe level 100 is going to be needed for R2, but I think R1 will be smooth at 80, I'll let you know how it goes

Regarding the layout for learnset, maybe having the next 1 or 2 level up moves displayed below the respective mon? TMs/HMs are important, but less so imo as you'll tell us exactly what TMs you'll be teaching them anyway.
Edit: Also, I've messed around with Pokemon Crystal ROM changes and modified my ROM to ignore the "move learned" requirement for all HMs so you can ignore catching and teaching HM Cheerleaders. I can mess around with Firered to see if I can it working there if you're interested. The way it works in crystal is it checks if you have the necessary badge, and then checks if you have the HM in your bag. If both checks are True, the move can be used. Flash/Fly are a bit different, but it just adds the move to ALL pokemon in your party's "Party Menu" as long as location conditions are met and the Badge/HM in bag conditions are True. (i.e. Fly will only show-up outside, Flash will only show up in dark caves)

Eliminating the TM/HMs would free up a significant amount of space. I do need to redesign the cards where the live stats sit anyway (for the solo run overlay as well), but I'm waiting on that until 2024. I need to get some content out and stop changing things for 5 seconds :P
If you could look into it I would appreciate that, for sure! I can also ask my code wizard about it.

      @@Eggsceptional Great news!
I was able to modify the code to ignore if any Pokemon KNOWS the HM by cutting out the "checkpartymove" requirement.
Edit: Field Moves now only work if you have the HM/TM. I'll work on Fly/Flash tomorrow.
I found a tutorial on adding Fly to the Pokemon Menu if they can learn Fly without having to teach it Fly, so once I get the other overworld HMs (and Rock Smash) working, I can start work on how to get Fly/Flash to work like they do in my Crystal ROM.

I think 15 IVs in the first run is a fair compromise, tbh it was a little rough to watch the 0 IV runs since a lot of the battles were so tough to figure out/ depended on some kind of luck and I was worried about you feeling burnt out having to not only playthrough all that but also having go over it in editing

    • @Eggsceptional
      @Eggsceptional  7 месяцев назад +2

It's true, longer runs means a longer editing process. It was mostly the fact that I resorted to cheating 100% of the time. Now that you're probably super insulted and want nothing to do with me, as a double battles idea I've always wanted someone to do a Hooty & the Blowfish run - that is, a Hoothoot and Qwilfish run 😛 I don't think they'd have any synergy at all and it would be really hard even if you evolved Hoothoot and Qwilfish didn't get an evolution until Legends Arceus, but I'm amused by the pun about a band that I think way too much about since they had like two songs I liked back in the 1990s lol. Oh, if you're using a special rom for this format, you might as well bypass the hm cheerleader problem by just adding in key items that replicate HMs.
Since this is a new format it won't be unfair to other comparisons to remove the need of HM pokemon. Better to do it sooner than later.
Also, on the subject, you could make HMs overwritable if you want to be able to strategize with them without time wasting penalties.
