A Stroke in Time Canoeing Documentary: 55 days and 800 Miles through the Pacific Ocean

  • This film chronicles a 55 day canoe expedition through the Inside Passage from Lund, British Columbia to Juneau, Alaska. As wild as the region itself, this cinema verité style film provides an immersive experience into the heart and soul of wilderness canoe tripping and its many challenges and moments of self reflection.
    In the summer of 2019 Liam and I set out to paddle over 800 miles through the Pacific Ocean. We'd never paddled more than a day on the ocean before and never attempted an expedition of this magnitude. Both of us grew up canoeing the many rivers of Northern Ontario and Quebec, but this trip confronted us with a whole new set of challenges. We knew we could never be fully prepared for what we would encounter, but spent the good part of the fall of 2018 and the Winter & Spring of 2019 planning out every detail we could. The beauty and sheer "bigness" of the region we paddled through can never fully be captured through video. We were humbled, challenged, and astounded by wildlife and beauty everyday.

    You two are very special, and 40 years from now you will look back and realize you did a bucket list trip. You did what many have dreamed about but never for whatever reason have attempted. Be very proud of what you did and hopefully you are able to make some money off of it.

    I think there is something weird and interesting about how on long adventures like the one you guys had, you spend some time feeling down, uninspired, and wanting to be doing something else. You try to remind yourself how you'll remember the good times, and spend as much time as you can enjoying the scenery and experience. Finally, when it is over, your brain somehow finds a way to make you revel the experience, remember the best times, and want to do it again. Thanks for a great film, hope the next adventure is just as good!

    Nice video, paddles 50 miles in MN boundary waters last summer, not as big water but we had some really windy days and until you have experienced that in a canoe you really have no idea. Hard to eat enough to prevent weight loss paddling all day. I am envious but would be scared to death at the same time. Loved it.

      Thanks so much Erin and Jon! Your channel and adventures are amazing! We both participated in a wilderness canoe camp in Temagami (Northwaters & Langskib) from ages 11-17, and Liam went on to guide there for many years afterward. Liams extended family had been attending for generations. Temagami is where it all began for us and will always hold a special place in our hearts and souls.

    • @jlexpeditions1812
      @jlexpeditions1812  2 года назад +2

      Thanks so much! That's a good question, we originally planned to bring it with us as we traveled back to our home on the East Coast, but we met a fellow canoeist/adventurer on the dock when we paddled into Juneau who changed our minds. He reached out to us while we were paddling Glacier Bay and asked if we would sell the canoe to him. Eventually he convinced us that he really needed it...so if you are ever in Juneau, Alaska keep an eye out for the red Mystic and give Brent a shout for us!

      @jlexpeditions1812  2 года назад +5

      Hi Linda, we appreciate the feedback! Jim Baird makes great videos. We made the choice to show our struggles and challenges in a very real and authentic way. There are of course moments of incredible joy and beauty that one experiences everyday while out on a trip. There are also moments of doubt and tremendous uncertainty. It was important to us that we did not just show all of the good moments, as we wanted to paint a full picture of what someone goes through when pushing their limits beyond what they thought possible. At the onset of the trip we had no certainty that we could accomplish what we set out to do, and I think that is reflected in our somewhat "complaining" or "down" attitude at times (the ocean is a daunting force). We all cope with our anxieties and fears in different ways, and this doc provides an unfiltered look into what we went through. This trip was the best time of our life (so far) and we would go back in a heartbeat. We hope you can enjoy the film despite our wallowing!
