  • The Festool Compact Modular System (CMS) consists of a sturdy folding platform and a number of interchangeable tool units. I have already made videos featuring the CMS with the saw insert (CMS TS). Here I demonstrate the setting up and commissioning of the CMS Router unit (CMS OF). In Part 1 the router is prepared and then attached to the CMS module. In this video, Part 2, the setup is completed and is followed by a demonstration of it being used for raised panel work.

    Peter, I just received my CMS table and OF1400 router. Your video will help me set up, as the booklets that come with are not very helpful. You are a great woodworking leader, fine instructor, and so generous with your videos. I look forward to learning how to use these tools and grow my skills. Many thanks.

    That's about the best demo I have seen for a router table. So simple to follow and to use when completed. It tends to put other router tables in the shade somewhat, but if it's the best you want, then this may be it. With the legs folded it would be easy to hang up on the wall out of the way to save floor space. Thank you again. I am ow going to look at the price, sit down and give this some thought.

    Thank you for yet another fine demonstration Peter. The CMS system is one of those things, when you have it, you wonder how you ever did without it! Especially in a small workshop like mine. I now have both the TS75 module and this router system in use - they are super, and meant that two vital machines only occupy the floorspace of one. As an aside, I've never found the Festool instruction guides to be particularly helpful, and always turn to your setup videos as a resource when I buy a new tool. Keep up the great work sir. Best wishes Scott.

    Peter,
    Thank you for helping me figure out some "hose" problems in my basement and garage workshop areas. Your two-part videos on the CMS were very instructive. Thank you for taking your time with the details and making the effort to produce two videos instead of one. I purchased an Oneida Ultimate Dust Deputy for my CT26 yesterday. However, the nice colored instruction manual does not match some updated parts - or lack of parts - that came in the box. Time to call Oneida! Cheers, Mark Hays

      Hi Ranny,
      Glad that you like the videos.
      The little jig is really simple and works perfectly. The wood is 10 mm thick veneered MDF that happened to be left over from a job. Any flat piece of wood that can be fixed to the surface of the table will do.

    This looks like such an unbelievably well designed tool. I can’t believe they stopped making it. Do you think it was because they didn’t sell many?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  28 дней назад

      I understand that it was because it could not meet all of the new safety requirements (US or EU or both - not sure). It still remains an excellent piece of kit if you can find one second hand. Peter

    Couple of comments. Good presentation of what can be a challenging install
    (I sell Festool in the USA and have had to "set up" each of the CMS tables I've sold). In the US we aren't allowed to use the OF 2200 because of the UL (Underwriters Limited) reluctance to bless the power switch for such a large amp draw.
    This unit (with the OF2200) can be used and is touted as a jointer for edges up to 50mm. My criticism is that it is the indeed table that moves limited to 10mm, rather than the out feed being adjustable which allows for greater flexibility.
    On a side note, Mark Hays wrote about the Oneida Ultimate Dust Deputy for the Festool CT 26. Here in the US (and I don't suppose this is any different in Europe) Festool tells me as a dealer, that using the Dust Deputy voids the warranty because of a lesser anti static connection . I was told this by one of the two national training officers in the US.
    Keep up the interesting videos, please, just for us ex -pats (born in Liverpool).

      Hi Joseph, I have never used a router table which had a jointer fence on it and have yet to benefit from it. I would have liked to have that micro adjustment for the whole fence rather than just the infeed side. But, in response to your point about you wanting it on the other side - it does allow me to use it to micro adjust a bit provided it is proud of the other side. I am aware of the warranty issue with the Dust Deputy but I have saved about 1/3rd of the cost of a new extractor by using the DD as I rarely need to buy any Festool bags. Thanks for your support. Peter

    Answered my question before I asked it Peter. Thanks. As always good quality reviews. The Q was: Can you use panel raising bits not usually fitting the OF1400 plunge collar in the CMS-OF module? Thankfully you can! Much safer to use those bits in a table so it's good festool allow them to fit into more than just their top range tool.

    very nice but soooo expensive. I think the ujk table (or the kreg's one which i prefer due to the self-squaring fence) it's overall a better choice. Do you agree?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 лет назад

      Hi Paulo
      The choice must come down to your needs and your budget. It would be unfair to compare a cast iron topped, fixed in the workshop table with a portable and flexible system like the CMS OF. The attributes of the UJK may suit one group of people and the CMS may suit another group.
      The UJK table is very substantial, really well made and, for me, perfect for a fixed workshop situation. The Festool CMS is also very well made, will take all sorts of abuse but is portable and takes up a lot less space in a small or crowded workshop.
      I have been used to two router tables since the early 1990s and having one that is fixed and one that can be easily moved is a perfect partnership. I have a contract on the horizon that requires portability.
      I have not seen the Kreg table but it does sound similar to the UJK one.
      Peter

    Hi Peter,
    Just wondering with the riser piece of wood you showed for a panel cutter and the OF1400, how do you attach the piece down to the table to keep it from sliding.
    Thanks,
    Dave.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 лет назад

      Hi Dave
      I have not done this as I use the OF2200 but...
      There are a couple of finger holes in the aluminium plate of the CMS-OF unit. If you had a couple of screw holes through that MDF distance piece (riser as you call it) that line up approximately with the centre of those two finger holes then you could screw into a pair of blocks fed in from under the table in order to clamp things up.
      As I said, I have not tried it and would need to satisfy myself that it was held securely before doing any work.
      Peter

    Heya, I´m planning on finally getting myself a router table. I´m just not sure which one :>. The 2 options I´m considering are the Festool CMS-OF, and the Incra Wonderfence system. Pricewise the Incra System costs about as much as the CMS-OF extension + MFT 3. Now my question would be if space isn´t neccessarily the issue do you prefer the UJK routertable you have over the CMS and if yes what would be the reasons?. Precision, stability or simply the small size of the CMS?
    Any insight you can provide would be greatly appreciated :)

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 лет назад

      Shin rah Hi Shin rah, The UJK table with the cast iron top is very solid and the professional fence works well. With an Incra fence I imagine it would be even better. The only issue you will face is that it is quite big and certainly heavy. I like the Festool CMS-OF (not the VL joined onto the MFT3) because it performs exceptionally well yet is light enough to be moved into a corner when not in use. The cutter changes are so easy that after a short time you will appreciate that it is a joy to use. I have always had two router tables in my workshop and I believe now I have the perfect combination - I often have both set up and use one first followed immediately by the other. So, quality is not an issue so you just need to judge portability and ease of cutter changes. Peter

      Heya, thanks for taking the time to reply! My main concern is ease of adjustments (not having to messure 5 times to set the fence in the appropriate distance for the task at hand) and the size of the table. To me it seems that the CMS table is rather small, especially when you work on larger pieces. As for the cutter changes, I would use a Router Lift from Jessem which seems to be identical to the UJK lift you have yourself, so guess the time needed for a cutter change should be similiar to the CMS?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  10 лет назад

      Shin rah I think that is probably true. I would try and get your hands on each in a shop in order to make your final decision. Peter

    Well Peter.
    Which do you prefer and which do you think has better dust collection, the Festool CMS or the Axminster router table?

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  5 лет назад

      Hi Cathal, The Festool setup has better dust extraction but the fence on the UJK is far better. Cutter changes are much easier with the Festool kit and I am not a fan of collet extensions which I found essential with the UJK kit. The cast iron table really is superb and makes the UJK table very stable. For me space became an issue and I could not afford to retain two router tables. The Festool table takes up far less space and so I have kept that one. Peter

    • @cathaldoherty115
      @cathaldoherty115 5 лет назад

      Thanks for the quick response Peter. Have you any knowledge of the Incra router table? I've watched dosens of videos on all of them (yours are by far the most straight forward and knowledgeable) and I can't decide??! I don't think you can offset the UJK router fence can you? Where as you can with the Festool and incra.

    • @NewBritWorkshop
      @NewBritWorkshop  5 лет назад

      No, you cannot offset the UJK fence. I have seen some brilliant router tables at The Woodworkers Workshop, I think that they are Incra and Jessem. Take a look at their web site: woodworkersworkshop.co.uk/ Tell them that I recommended them to you ! Peter

      Hi Cathal, I have now moved my OF1400 into the CMS and it works brilliantly. It has all the power needed, even for panel raising, and leaves my OF2200 for those bigger freehand jobs. The ergonomics of the OF2200 are superb for freehand work. Peter
