Based on my observations, it appears that black women tend to gravitate towards realistic drama stories that are filled with tension. Many black teenagers have a strong affinity for manga, whether it originates from Japan or is influenced by it, that is not necessarily inspired by black culture. They also seem to like young adult books as well.

I wouldn't want to put out anything I wouldn't want to read myself. Most of the times poeple pick up stuff because it's refreshing and new or has a new take on a certain trophe. That's why people like Japanese stuff because it's a different culture. Casuals don't buy stuff because they want to support someone (a majority of the time), its for the exciment of seeing stuff through the eyes of someone whos mind works differently. He's surprised only white people read his comics, I'm not lol. They're the only ones who find his stuff refreshing. Nobody wants to read a book that is only about themselves because most of the time they're poorly written. I wouldn't pick that book up either. It's diverse in all the wrong ways. Diversity should be the focus of the story and writting, not your characters unless it's relevant.

if its good enough people won't even notice but some of these who do it for the sake of doing it break immersion. I've been reading this manga called nick to lever and I find it funny how japanese can make somethinfg more diverse than what we have here without making it political. Alot of things in the west that are diverse feel the same even if they're different genres. it's all dull in content. If you know how to switch it up you can pull it off but they keep dragging the topic. Imagine if one piece was all about diversity and less about the adventure @@dmcboy6842

true, one piece alludes to real world issues without alienating readers, proof of great story telling matters. Behind the goofy walls it puts up it does cover alot of darkness in the world but you have you keep and open mind and look at for stuff and imo that form of story telling is way more rewarding to read. Also I mentioned Nickc to Lever since it's just a comedy of a black and a white guy living in japan who are best friends and do goofy toon comedy stuff in a realistic painting type artstyle. It's doesn't cover any underlying message of descrimination or anything even when they are foreigners but that's what makes it so good to me. They're just two best friends of different skin colors living in japan and theres no meaning hebind it. Sometimes that's how it ought to be @@dmcboy6842

You say artist should not get caught up chasing money and should instead focus on producing something they can be proud of. If making art that uplifts and inspires black people is what Shawn wants to do, what's the problem? Not every black person is low class gangster or drug addict. and Shawn is just pulling from that experience to make stories he would like to see. Maybe he wont be appreciated in his lifetime but at least he tried.
Black people in America were some of the first anime fans. Many of us will tell you stories of our uncles pulling out old VHS tapes of Ninja Scroll, The Guiver, Wicket City, or Gundam. If not for rappers making it cool to like anime it would probably have never gone mainstream. There is an audience for black animation and comics, just look at the boondocks... or the hundreds of black artist who are trying to create their own series.
As a south african you don't know what the experience of the black diaspora is. we may have common ancestry, but comes off like Japanese man trying to tell you what it's like to be Mongolian.

Yall can do all that without selling it in divisive language. Shawn always talks about white supremacy as if it's holding his feet from moving forward. It's always like an excuse why he or other blacks can't go beyond. It's a self-inflicted genjustu yall have put yourselves in.
Just make a product without selling it with the pro-black stuff. It's no different from the diversity quotas. Black people are humans, right? So don't treat them anything less, just make a good story and they'll be inspired regardless of the skin color of the characters, don't depend on race to make it sell, because that is louder than the plot, which makes it a turn-off.

White supremacy is a real problem that people have to deal with, and you also talk about divisive and controversial topics. It's better to tell the truth than sugar-coat things. If he wanted to sell through the big publishers he would have to portray black people as gangbangers, hookers, thieves, and sexual degenerates. He wont, so, he cant get mainstream. You yourself admit that the big media companies are the only way to have a sustainable career, and a big part of that is because they have resources and backing. But they also have a narrative they want to hold over the black community in america, and if you are not down they will step on you.
Most black americans don't identify with the media portrayal of them, but the powers that be (the six corporations that control the entertainment industry) have a different say.
I don't like it when people sell their products(any product) solely on some identitarian grounds, but I can't remember Shawn ever doing that. He always talks about his stories but makes sure to mention that he's creating interesting stories featuring black characters.

As a aspiring manga-ka myself and a supporter of your channel. I disagree with you on this one. I don't think there is anything wrong with wanting to target a certain demographic. There are many reasons why someone would do so. I disagree with the statement you made saying black people do not read. Especially manga. Whenever I go to anime cons there is a huge increasing presence of black people attending these cons more than ever. This is proof that there are more black people than ever who are into manga/anime. There is nothing wrong with making stories that relate to a group of people who happen to have skin color as a common reality of life. A lot comes with having brown skin. I don't understand how you can tell us to extrapolate from reality when creating manga, but then you disregard the reality of a whole race of people. I feel like it may be lack of education on the history of black people in America that blinds you from seeing why its important to have representation in our art. We've spent hundreds of years in America having our history hidden from us and then given a false one. Our whole existence in America we have had others painting our image. It is time and very important that we take back that power to show a positive image of us. I'm going to prove to you that you can make The world's greatest Mannaa and have representation included.

@@muzisensei3493 Exactly! You’re proving my point. “Not of African Descent”. Not everyone who is brown were enslaved for hundreds of years in a a country that controlled and demonized their image. I don’t get why you can’t empathize with our history. You speak as if you don’t have knowledge of the history of black people in America. We were shitted on and told we were less than for hundreds of years and we were denied a positive representation in mainstream media. Why is it so wrong that we would want to be represented correctly after experiencing that?

17:24 A lot of these professing Christian’s are so focused on all the wrong things that’s how u get sects that just talk about “Jesus wasn’t white He’s black and only black people go to heaven” Let’s follow what Jesus said and forget about race.

I’ve been in the customer service business for 20 plus years and I can say that it’s beyond hard to sell to black people. They want it for free. I’m working on my graphic novel and it has a black main character. BUT there’s absolutely nothing in the book about race or color. I’m trying to reach and sell to the whole freaking world. I don’t write my stories based on race because every black person don’t all go through the same experience.
Wait, so Sean James spent 10 years trying to sell his black comics to black people and realized that they’re not interested. That was 12 years ago and he’s still trying to sell to the same audience. So all in all, he wasted 22 years of his life in ignorance? Wow! Talk about stubborn as a rock. He will never get anywhere with his books.

Let me give you some good news. Masahiro Hotta proved 15 years ago that entropy exists in the mind of the beholder, and it was recently verified by experiments.
He came up with a protocol for instantaneous movement of energy. I thanked him on Twitter. It was a brief but wonderful exchange.
Because humans evolved on the same planet, we see this world of entropy and decay, but all around us is infinite complex order and inexhaustible energy.
    Rise above. ❤
