about the oliver: in brazil we had a government in the 80s that forbid foreign imports. that's why roland licensed to oliver several boss pedal and amp designs, so they could sell locally.
The Oliver HM 20 is a beast indeed, the whole line was a way to sell boss pedals as the military government of the 70s limited access to technology unless it didn't had a similar made in brazil. As you can imagine that's why we had these weird computers and gear. But Oliver did a superb work there, Their chorus kick ass too.
Thank you! Great info as always. I'm currently using the Waza Craft HM-2. Building your HM2 Cult. The PCB is populated just have to wire it. Also building a GCI Murdock Plus. Same state, The PCB is populated just have to wire it.
I have a Gamma HM-3 I really want you to do a video on. If you’re interested, let me know. It’s got essentially the same gyrator circuits, but the input and gain stages are modified. It sounds huge and fuzzy and has a hilarious amount of gain and volume. It has some really interesting components on the PCB as well.
@@coveryourears3851 it's just a solid hm2. Made well, sounds how it should and the blend makes it more usable with different rigs. I like blending it in on doom metal setups for extra nasty tones.
I have an original Wurm on my board. I thought it might interest you to know that they began building SMD PCBs with the white enclosure first, before they put the Wurhm out. That’s what mine is built on. It’s a great pedal, I was happy to hear you think it’s the nastiest of them. If you want to compare them I have a bunch of gutshots I can share with you.
The Swollen Pickle MKIIs NOT the mini Version, is the same as the MKII, the MKIIIs is the mini one with 2 toggles instead of mini pots,The Dirty Donnie has all the pots, including the 2 inside, on the outside. the MKI was WAY HUGE! One reason Tripps named the company that, his pedals were Huge and no surface mount back then so it HAD to be bigger as its an extremely modded Muff
I'm currently running a dunn effects death knob into an earthquaker life pedal. I have a this heavy earth crustifixion on pre order. I also own a Fuzzlord HM-6 and a HM-2W. I have never owned an OG HM-2.
The Japanese ones sound like the HM2W on STandard. The TC ELectronic Eyemaster is designed after the Taiwan made one which Entombed and Dismember used.
Amazing! Of all these pedals you show my story is: the one that started all was the BYOC Swede full kit! After that I got the KMA Würm. I loved the 4 band EQ, and the fact you can fine tune each band was amazing! But after that I put my hands on a Earthbound Audio Throat Locust: and this is my HM2 holy grail! For my taste and my needs it's the best HM2 modern clone out there! The 3-band EQ and clipping switching is super powerful! I love it so much, that at some point I got a second one! Other HM2s that gravitated in my studio were: - Fuzzlord: I found it ok, the only thing I really liked about it was the additional clean blend. - ARION: it was indeed a cool HM2 clone! As you state it has way more Bass then a HM2 itself. I have a Dirty Monger Haxan pcb which I shall assemble at some future point... - Boss HM3: it was nice, same bass response as the HM2, but a bit more "modern" high band tailored EQ. - Idiotbox: super cool fuzz (I love these Univox Superfuzzes) but IMO is more of a bigmuff/superfuzz mutant with a HM2 EQ. - Boss PW2: super cool you mention this one too! I found one to try out a while ago: super cool and underrated, lost Boss gem! To my ears the PW2 is a bastard grungy version of a HM2. In the end I've kept only the EARTHBOUND: It does all I need! The parametric EQ and clipping switch are super effective, as every other Earthbound pedals I own or tried it has a HUGE low-end, and it can do "standard chainsaw", doomed fuzzes, PW2, subbass monsters and much, much more!!!
Would kill for some of those dunwich pedals especially that tyrant. The Judas is my favorite Hm-2 pedal so far in my collection hands down. Such an insane pedal. Your channel rules, thanks for all the info 🫡
@@FETeching I have a wurm2 that I love and toss on the board once in a while, great pedal. That Judas though is just filthy, the chainsaw blended with that fuzz just checks all the boxes for me haha
I have an OG MIJ, OG MIT, Waza, Left Hand Wrath, Death Knob, Heirophant, and a HM2 Cult and I thought I had a problem. Turns out I’m amateur hour over here.
Although I never had as many clones as you, I certainly had far too many, so I got rid of two thirds of them. I still have 5 Boss HM-2s and numerous others. My favourite is the Pepers which I use most. I find it interesting that you say all the red Rocktek pedals sound bad, when mine is almost exactly the same as an HM-2. I've owned it since new in the 80s. I also previously owned 4 Metal Rocker pedals: 2 branded Rockson and 2 as Lazer, so I don't think they are so rare in Europe. Another honourable mention should be the TC Electronic Fangs. It definitely gets a good chainsaw going, even if it's not exactly the same. Another is the Exar HM02.
Now that's some impressive nerding right there. +1 for the KMA Wurm. Great pedal if you want to give your tone both some bite and some massive bottom end.
Blackhawk sauron (yeah its just got the hm2 mid hump-not really an hm2),Dunn Death Knob and Pepers Humongous are the only variants other than the original that have stayed in constant rotation for me!
Much like you, my favorite is the DOD American Metal. The Super American is nice but I like the original 3 knob just a bit more. If not that, the OG Boss, Behringer and TC Electronic are my favorites for doing the 1:1 saw thing. For "HM2 like" sounds I really like the DOD Death Metal and the 9 of Swords Funeral Party with a Boss Power Stack. I also like my prototype "Footswitch Only" saw and the "Leatherface HM2" clone that you sold to me. Keep up the good work.
Excellent video Terry. I proudly use arguably the most hated distortion pedal made - the MXR fullbore metal, which whether you believe it or not can in a certain setting deliver a good chainsaw.
Great Video! I use plugins for noodling on the computer, HM300 just for fun, HM2W because I jumped the wagon immediately and the Dunn fx Death Knob to experiment with my Distortion pedals... I love the tones on all of them but may not be acquiring any new chainsaw pedals in the near future, Unless I get a good deal on a KMA Wurm or something similar
I had no idea there were so many clones from the HM-2. I had one and the Behringer HM-300. The Behringer sounds damn good and as you mentioned its cheap and easy to get
The Behringer HM300 kinda sucks, its barely an HM2, I'm sure their MetalZone clone is dead on, as is the Super Fuzz, but yeah I have the HM300 and its too scooped
damnnnn. thats a nice collection. I use the grindstein primarily. But I could also get really nice tones out of the eyemaster. I really wanted that tyrant. but I couldnt get it in time. Which is your favorite?
The original Boss is always king. Outside of that I have really enjoyed making noise with the Judas, the new SD-1 module from AIB, the Oliver, and yes the Tyrant always makes its way in there.
@HM2CULT I guess the chips used in the original simply don't exist anymore. I can't bring myself to pay over 200 dollars for an extremely old and used pedal tho, I'm just gonna go for the waza. Also, I haven't seen an impressive AB video comparison yet. But I'm assuming it's close enough. The problem with most of them is they try to match settings, which I don't believe is the correct way to compare pedals. I think they should set the best for each, and then judge which is best.
I use the Eyemaster (gain at 0, volume about 7) in front of friedman be-od clone This doesn't give me a full-fledged chainsaw, but I don't need it. The result is fat and charismatic distortion.
Is there certain amplifiers that go very well with the HM-2 pedal?. I see a lot of people use Peavey solid state amps with them. I use a Marshall dsl40c on the clean channel and it sounds fantastic with the HM-2 running into the front.
I have a really "bay area thrash sound" whjich is quite different from what you specialize in. One day, you willing, I'd like to do a collab with you making a riff or two. My idea is to put your guitar in one channel (hard pan) and mine in the other and see what happens!
I have been using the dismember lwa special edition and the og made in Japan hm2 and sometimes my og thrown torcher. I'm wondering in your opinion what hm2 clone has a nice tight low end? I'm using a 7 string.
THey lowered the noise floor to get it to sound usable.. ALso, they copied the Japanese version, not the Taiwan made that the Swedish bands used. The TC EYemaster nails that. The Arion Metal Master has twice the bass and gain if you can find one, Have to turn bass and distortion at 2 O'clock (HM2 OCLOCK?) to get the HM2 tone I got an all black and black and grey The Waza is PERFECT. ALSO THE HM2 is a ****Super Fuzz*** not Muff, but can do muff...z they took the Octave out of and used the fuzz topology to make the HM2. technically its a fuzz
Many are made. But at the end of the day, there's just something about the OG that the others can't replicate. The Tyrant gets really close, and the Throne Torcher is a pretty good boutique offering, but nothing beat the OG
@HM2 CULT yeah even a made in Taiwan HM2 beats a lot of clones in terms of OG sound to my ear. You missed an HM2 as well, the boss katana plug-in download.
Stoked to be included in this one, great video!
