  • Episode 3 of the Body Shape Master Class shows you how I went about styling a UK size 16 lady (Sue) who is petite in height at 5ft 1 inches, large busted and carries her weight around her waist and thighs, so a real mixture of several different body shapes. Sue wanted an outfit for her 50th birthday party celebrations at her local pub and hopefully you’ll agree that she looks fantastic and more importantly felt confident leaving the studio and excited to show off her new pieces.
Just for the record, I don’t make any money from these suggestions or links.
    For reference I’m:
    ********************
    A UK Size 8-10 (USA: 4-6, EU: 36-38)
    5ft 3 (ish) = 161cm
    Sue (the model) is

I keep coming back to this video and recommending it to people I know because you are the only stylist I have seen on RUclips that acknowledges the fact that petite does NOT mean size 0. As someone that is 5’ tall but not 90lb this video has really taught me a lot about balance, and proportion. My biggest tip that I’ve learned as a petite size 8-10 ignore the size on the label and invest in a good tailor. I always buy 2 sizes bigger and tailor in.

Really appreciate you addressing larger petite bodies and appreciate skipping the boned waist nipper. We petite ladies can have very short waists and the boned nippers can be too long for us causing them to buckle and then dig into our skin quite painfully even when wearing the appropriate size.

I know how you feel, I’m under 5ft and am now size 18 thanks to an under active thyroid! I’ve always had problems working out where my waist is, my ribs slip inside my hip bones which isn’t fun. I now have a belly like I’m 18 months pregnant!!! I just wish I could find out how to dress when looking like an Easter egg on legs!

Love this. I'm 5'4". When I was 30 (36 years ago), I was co-owner of a start business in the Midwest. A guy from LA came through and held a large seminar about styling and all. I was chosen as one of the models - so fun! Shoulder pads were so " in" for years back then, and then they kind of went away. I was horrified to be a size 9 then. Now, if I approach 14-16, it's a miracle. I'm built like your model but my hips are the smallest measurement.
Your model is super brave and your styling expertise is excellent. She looks fantastic and I thank her for being vulnerable and yet confident!
    Love it. So helpful. 💋💛

4'11" here, and a US size 16 (mainly because of the 36DDD girls and a big old gut) and I also have large upper arms that I hate and hide.
These tips are all _really_ great, but I absolutely would've LOVED to see you collab with a hair stylist to select the appropriate do's for each outfit! I have hair similar to Sue's- medium length, fine, flat, and straight. I always struggle to figure out if I should do an updo, a braid or bun, or try to curl, add extensions for volume, etc...
All and all, VERY informative, thank you! 🤗

Good point as Sue was picking an outfit for her 50th birthday and I agree, she needed to have her hair in an updo style to make her look more glamourous and to give her a bit more height.
Would love to have seen an aftershot inserted showing us which outfit she chose for her birthday party and how she looked on the day.

I am also 5’1, and I’ve never been able to find a video like this that helps people out size and shape to find clothes that are suitable and look amazing! I would always have to look at videos of much much taller women who had a relatively similar shape, but I could never get it right because they had so much more length to play with!

I love that you use shoulder pads to balance the chest and waist! Other RUclips channels never even mention them in their styling or "fashion hacks" videos but I think they can make the biggest difference if you have narrow shoulders and/or have some weight in your upper arms. However, I don't love the classic foam pads meant for shoulders. They're just too visible and then the 80's call wanting their shirt back and I want to wear mine with most any top so being undetectable is key. There are a few silicone boob lifters on Amazon that are teardrop shaped, thinner at the top and a slightly thicker at the bottom. When applied with the thicker part coming over the shoulder, they give more of a gentle rounded up-slope to the outer round part of the shoulder but no bulk in the area between the edge of the shoulder and the neck which gives a thick football pad look. Plus the silicone is harder to detect under the shirt and has the feel and movement of a real body part. They're also adhesive so they don't move around and I have trimmed the top of mine to fit. Your bra strap goes over them. They make all my blouses look and drape ten times better balancing my larger chest and making my waist look smaller. And no one even knows I'm wearing them.

I think it's actually the shoulder STRUCTURE that helps. The model has rounded shoulders. Someone of her body type that has defined straight shoulders could likely do without the added bulk & projection of shoulder pads making their upper body look super wide.

That was very informative. My only suggestion is that the shoulder pads might look better if the thinnest part goes close to the neck and the thicker part over the tip of the shoulder. That way it would also elongate the neck while adding a strong shoulder.

Thanks for showing how we can make the most of our body shapes. It was great to see how a long necklace helps with shape - I thought it would draw attention to my big bust. Also, I didn't think that I could wear a jumpsuit, but Sue looked great! So, I think that I'll try one for summer.
I'm a similar shape and height to Sue (although a bit smaller in both) and completely understand what she meant about feeling like a "bag of nails" in the cream jumper.
Adding a French tuck, or pushing sleeves up can be comfortable, but not when you are swamped by the garment and probably not when you have to do both.
Personally, I can't stand pushing sleeves up. I couldn't do the elastic trick to shorten sleeves, as it would hurt. I have joint issues and nerve damage, both of which would be aggravated by having something tight there. Many bigger people have circulation problems, so it could be bad for them, too. I'm learning to sew, as I want to be able to adjust my clothes to fit better.
I wonder if Sue is like me - I used to have a real hourglass figure, until I put more weight on in my middle area. Now, I have a huge tummy and my once defined waist isn't as obvious as before :(

This is a great video. I am also short and with a little heavier midsection and arms so it was interesting to see the effect of shoulder pads. I think Sue looked great - even in the white jumper that she didn't like. Also, I think the nude shoes made her look taller. It's very enlightening and Sue should be proud. I wouldn't have had the courage to do this on video. I'm too insecure. Bravo to Sue!

A really interesting and informative styling video! Sue looked great in all the outfits actually. The River Island dress was the most flattering to her shape. May I suggest doing a lesson on the following:
      1. Petite plus, busty, and short-waisted
      2. Shoe tips for the petite pear shape with menopausal stomach when you really need to wear support shoes with arch support.
      3. How to dress the petite pear shape with the menopausal stomach overhang (some call apron) that hangs lower.
      Thank you!!!

I truly love this series! It is the only one I truly find educational and inspiring. But I would love to see this master class for the summer season! There (in a hot summer) I don’t think shoulder pads or spanx underneath will be used or will be desired.
I am a slim apple shape and I have the hardest time in summer staying cool and airy but not revealing tummy lumps and bumps! Or armpit jelly!
Tackling this topic would be a great help and very much appreciated.
    Love to all of you!

Thank you for creating this helpful video, especially thank you to Sue! Perhaps you could focus on humid weather clothing. Many of us gals are living in very warm climates year-round, or extreme summer temperatures. It’s difficult to look casually put together, while you’re trying not to perspire through your clothes because of the heat and humidity. As many of your viewers I’m a woman who has reached menopause. My weight increased from a pear-shape, now it’s the three B’s, busty, belly and booty.. At daytime, it’s sandals and flops because we’re over the high heels. Looking for easy go-to smart outfits for days, running to market or easy lunches with family and friends.

@@mmpersonalstyling I would also love to see summer casual for a big city lunch gathering into an evening dinner date. Plus business casual outfits for weekdays, or weekend travel.
No shape-wear as mentioned, for all the folks living mostly in the hot, humid, summer temperatures, but with some layers for cold air conditioned restaurants or an evening out at a school/college reunion.
Would especially like to see bold colors and patterns styled in light/bright summer attire (no athletic wear). Especially for the petite height, busty, menopausal tummy ladies, in the average US female size of 14-16.
What about coordinating outfits/pieces/accessories for 4-day weekend get away or cruise, with more casual + dressed up for evening attire?
      Thanks!
