Bloodgood was formed in Seattle, Washington in 1984. The band was in the name of the leader Michael Bloodgood. In the past decades, Christian rock music has covered a wide range of genres from heavy metal to pop rock. Bloodgood was one of the most influential bands, representing the top-class Christian metals.
By 1988, there had come out four largest Christian metal bands: Bloodgood Barren Cross, Leviticus and Whitecross. Speaking of Christian metals from the four legends, their musical works used to symbolize power, speed and strong beat. However, the metal bands featuring heavy taste also have their melodious side.
In a 1998 retrospective, Christian music critic Brian Quincy Newcomb would write that "Bloodgood's ministry and music was a vital stepping stone in the maturing process of Christian rock."
Any metal legend has their melodious side as this album "Rock In A Hard Place" is the best example from Bloodgood. Just compared to their former album "Detonation (1987)" featuring the same line-up, a typical Christian heavy metal release, "Rock In A Hard Place" includes more melodious tunes and sounds closer to hair metal and melodic hard rock.
For whoever hears of Bloodgood for the first time as well as for melodic rock fans, this album is highly recmmended, including the melodic rock gems to the largest extent from the band. As long as heavy metal rockers play melodious tunes, that must be the masterpieces as most impressive songs from Whitecross and Styper are all from their ballads and melodious gems.
In this album, all the songs were created by the band's members and producer Terry B. Shelton. According to the contents from their songs, they distinctly conveyed Christian spirits even though some of the works didnt directly contain "God or Jesus" like this song. Based on the original ideal by Michael Bloodgood, they keep rocking along the Christian route.
"The World (Keeps Movin' Around)" almost sounds closest to melodic hard rock, blessing for years, about the distressing happenings on this moving world. Not very straightforward as the lyrics convey, but the song displays their world outlook.
Before the band's formal St debut was released in 1986, the founding members once released a mini demo album "Metal Missionaries" in 1985, of which they sold over 5,000 copies at concerts, symbolizing the formation of the band. Their hometown Seattle was well-known for metal bands such as TKO, Queensrÿche and Metal Church. Michael Bloodgood felt a need to represent Christ to that audience, and the band was the natural way to do so. Christian rock bands are different from commercial rock bands on promotion, but they have made it with big success in rock n roll industry.
Their first major United States tour was in 1987 and was protested by groups on the extreme Christian right. The band was more popular in Europe than in the United States. Anyway, their second album "Detonation" was the most well-known one during Bloodgood's 1980s glorious years and was successfully released and re-released in US, Canada, Europe and Brazil. They toured the United Kingdom in 1988. This tour featured vocalist Les Carlsen portraying Pontius Pilate during the song "Crucify", which was included in their 1987 album "Detonation", as well as a graphic, live-action portrayal of Christ being crucified. In general, some themes from their songs are serirous, different from some other CCM artists' works purely carrying peace and love, but they performed devoutly.
Bloodgood officially disbanded in 1994 and was reformed in 2006 and have been performing several times a year since in the US and Europe. They have worked with Oz Fox from Stryper in the latest formed line-up, featuring duo guitars with Paul Jackson.
Bloodgood was a 2010 Inductee into the Christian Music Hall of Fame, whose active years could have lasted until today, because a posting on the band's website states that they "have been working with David Zaffiro to create new material for an album and possible singles to be released in 2022." Sadly something happened suddenly. On 29th July, 2022, it was announced on their official Facebook page that Michael Bloodgood passed away due to complications of a hemorrhagic stroke he suffered since February 2022. Two days later the band announced its disbanding.
