    I’ve had an RME Fireface UFX (1st gen) for 10 years, rock solid, clean preamps, low latency. I’ve changed computers 3 times during that time and shipped the unit intercontinentally by mail and it still works and is being supported to this day and I’ll keep using it for as long as I can and then pass it on to my children

  • @FlockofAngels

    I have owned about 10 audio interfaces all the way back to the first Soundblaster. None of them reproduce transients like the RME interface. I could hear the transients being muffled by the old interfaces but I could not find any way to fix them. RME became that solution. I can clearly hear the difference between my old recordings and the RME recordings. I have owned expensive interfaces as well like the E-MU 1820m and still had this problem with transients. Most people would not notice the muffled/distorted transients but I could easily hear them. Having had this problem with every previous interface, this is why I am skeptical that any interface can outperform the RME. Sound is my number #1 issue. My RME device is the Fireface UCX II.

    • @johnwalter6410
      @johnwalter6410 2 года назад +2

      Muffled transients? If your interface is doing that something else is wrong. No modern interface should sound like that. I use RME for driver reliabilty. But as far as sound goes, the difference in sound between a cheap (modern) interface and an expensive one is negligible. Anyone who says they can hear a huge difference is fooling themselves.

    • @FlockofAngels
      @FlockofAngels 2 года назад +2

      @@johnwalter6410 That is what most audiophiles tell you that the difference is negligible when it come to transients and also overall clarity. But that is not the case. Not one interface had this problem but all of my previous interfaces muffled many of my transients over several versions of Windows and several different computer systems until I tried the RME interface. I can show you hundreds of examples of muffled transients. Occasionally I get a muffled transient with the RME but it is very rare. I had to train my ear to hear the muffled transients. A lot of new interfaces are coming out on the market and I am hesitant to buy them because of this issue. All interfaces are not the same when it comes to sound quality. As for driver reliability, you can buy a $50 dollar interface that has Windows 11 drivers.

    • @D-One

      Muffled transients is a new concept for me, someone call Dan Worrall so I can make sense of this.

    • @FlockofAngels
      @FlockofAngels 2 года назад +1

      @@D-One You might be surprised to know that some cameras function poorly in low light... The image comes out all grainy. Think of transients like low light... Even some very expensive cameras can perform abysmally in low light conditions.

    • @D-One
      @D-One 2 года назад

      @@FlockofAngels I dabble in video so I understand that, sensors use light so less light = more ISO which = less quality / more noise (Aperture and sensor size also plays aa role) An audio equivalent for me would be recording really low then boosting the gain which also brings up the noise floor, these 2 concepts match almost perfectly between audio and video/photography. Boosting something an unreasonable amount = more noise.
      I don't get how any of that correlates to audio transients specifically, especially if not affecting anything else, I am not discrediting the possibility, just curious about what's going on.

    I am using an RME AIO since 2011. When switching to Mac, I bought a Sonnet case. After 11 years, I had no issue at all.
    RME provides the newest drivers, even stuff like the ARC USB supports the old interface. Latency is below 6ms - which is still fast.
    This is the only disadvantage: If you have such a device, it is really hard to buy something new - since you don't get something better 🙂

    • @doggodproductions2259

      I absolutely adore my Aurora (n), I end up using it over my Burl mothership converters and even my Hilo, as it's essentially a Hilo without the slight transformer coloration, but with alot more channels. I used the original for 10+ years with great results, so when Lynx finally decided to release a new Aurora, I knew it would be worth it. Theyre not a brand that makes frivolous releases, you know if they're releasing a whole new Aurora, it's going to be a significant upgrade. The Aurora (n) also has one of the best clocks in the business. I've stopped using dedicated clocks in most cases and clocking everything to the Aurora (n), sometimes the Hilo (they use the same clock). It's pretty incredible, if you clock the original Aurora to the (n)'s clock, it improves the OG Aurora significantly.
      I use the Aurora (n) often for mastering because I use a ton of tube gear, and most of my 2 channel converters (Burl B2, Hilo) have a bit more color than I want when converting back to digital.

I didn't have the budget to buy new, so I bough the kit used on Reverb from a few different shops and the total for the complete setup came to less than $3,000 USD (the HDSPe MADI FX itself was never used and still shrink wrapped in the box). Similar to you, I am on an M1 Mac (Macbook Air) and I can't get lower than 4.6 ms of latency, but it's good enough for me for now, even for tracking (i.e. vocals, guitar amp sims).

In the above video, he specifically shows the current drivers for the Fireface 400 which was released in 2006. Not a lot of interfaces are supported that long. What shocked me was that beta native M1 drivers were available for it when the M1 macs were released. Not many are on top of their driver game like RME.

    I'm interested in the concept of putting (far) more money into the converters vs the computer. I wonder if people sort of short change the computer in the budget because they're not really factoring in everything it does, but I guess that depends on how you use it. If you don't care about latency, you don't use a lot of plugins, you don't use any software synths, then an M1 Mac Mini would probably be fine, yes? Sadly I do everything, including keyboards, in the box, and I drool over the Mac Studio while using my 2018 i7 MBP. Regarding RME stuff, it's out of my budget range, but it seems outstanding.

If in the meantime RME provides an Atmos monitor controler and calibration through Totalmix Fx i´ll ditch the Anubis.

  • @krisellis702

    The MADI-FX interface is awesome...probably the only downside I've encountered is that TotalMix can get a little confusing when you have 300+ channels available. Lots of side scrolling, and it's a good plan to spend some time labelling the totalmix inputs (and the inputs in Reaper too). At least it was a little confusing for me, especially with converters that only fill 24 of those 56 or 64 channels. Made for a number of "Channel X on my converter is Channel ? on my TotalMix input row" moments.
    Overall I'm super happy with it; especially when connected to both my 24Ch converter and X32 mixer. Lots of options for routing and cue mixes. I thought I'd end up using the onboard FX more than I actually do, however. In practice I just use Total-Mix for the live inputs, and then add time based FX from Reaper on separate busses. Not really a big deal if your reverb/echo has some latency.
    Also should mention that RME's support has been fantastic. Even though I bought the card used they helped me sort out an issue I was having with static noise, which turned out to to be user error (SSL Alphalink uses 56 ch MADI instead of 64...get it wrong and you still get sound, but nots of noise along with it).

    How is this vs the antelope 32?
    I am considering getting a classic Soundcraft ghost 32 for hybrid mixing and tracking with my analog equipment to and from Logic Pro x.
    Thinking what would be better for the project?
    Working on MacBook Pro m1 by the way.
    Thank you so much , great content!

    As far as I've tested, THE only stable drivers available. I personally now own the UFX+ that travels with me at FOH for live gigs. Have never had a problem with it (fun fact, numerous mixers have had problems but my interface kept working). Also own a UA twin and loath everything about it. Owned numerous interfaces, nothing compares to RME.

    If the latency is that good through thunderbolt it gives me a lot of hope for latency with the card directly connected to the motherboard… haven’t decided which card to get yet but I’m definitely thinking RME for reliability… was thinking REDNET but there’s not enough people recommending it and now there’s a new company call Marian, with their Seraph cards which I’m yet to research properly, but over everything is reliability… plus for conversion RME is great and personally for master conversion I feel there’s some better out there, maybe I’ll go with RME for my digital reference still mind

      @danielgaudet6114 2 года назад

      The latency doesn't really change if you use PCIe directly or through a Thunderbolt enclosure, you'll get the same latency. The latency he's talking about in the video is the RTL while tracking in Reaper which is very low. If he had a CPU that could do more like the M1 Max, he could lower the sample size and reduce it even more. I have a similar setup with an M1 Mac and the MADI FX card and I can't go to the lowest sample size (32 samples) while tracking through my DAW along with some plugins since it's a bit too much for my M1 Mac and I will get some audio glitches.

    If you had to choose 2 out of: 1-very low latency, 2-just works, 3-affordable then RME is 1 and 2. Is there option where very low latency + afforadable is fulfilled but don't care about if it works or not?

    I bought an RME Fireface UCX II 5 months ago and I immediately fell in love with it. But 2 weeks ago my interface broke down (blank screen). And now i have to wait between 1 or 2 months to get it repaired. 1 or 2 months... The thing is even if i could buy a new one in the meanwhile and resell it after it's impossible because they are out of stock.
    To put it midly i'm a bit annoyed. I was in love with it but now it's complicated. I hope i'm wrong.

    I use RME audio interface, amongs others, it is great but you have to modded heavily to really make it sing, use external word clock, upgrade opamaps, audio capacitors, decouple converters etc. Stockaudio interfaces sound very harsh and sterile, no matter how expensive it is.

    Heyya, how have you set up the routing between the four RME pieces? You mentioned the M32's connect to the MADI FX interface via MADI. Wondering how does the ADI 2 come into play? Is that connected directly to the Mac via USB? Connected via the MADI FX via AES?

    Invested in a ufx+ and babyface this year. So far loving them. Yeah, the only issue is the Pc being used and not getting super low latency, otherwise they run flawlessly.

    • @bits-bytes
      @bits-bytes Год назад

      What do you call super low latency? Do you mean converter latency? Do you mean RTL (round trip latency) converter latency plus the time over USB/FW/TB? I assume your PC is most likely the limitation. Higher latency you only get if you need to use higher ASIO buffer sizes. This depends on your use case and DAW project. Otherwise: converter latencies of nowadays interfaces are very low (compared to the full RTL) and all RME drivers have similar low latency at the same ASIO buffer size.

    I'm probably in the minority, but I bought an RME UCX II, and it was giving me problems with my PC setup. I also wasn't a fan of the sound. So I sent it back and bought the Cranborne 500R8, and couldn't be happier. I've heard nothing but good things about RME so my experience was a strange one to say the least.

    I think I would have preferred some retaining nuts on the BNC connectors of the expansion bracket, so that the whole thing doesn't flex when you put the slightest pressure on them, but other than that the HDSPe MADI FX seems pretty good.

    Using ADI6432 (madiaes converter) at my work for 8 years. It's not really "interesting" piece of equipment, some may say that it does nothing :D since it converts already digitized signals (but it does also some magic on the clock signal, regenerating and purifying....). But again as with all other RME products - it just works. The only option of rme product not to work is if someone forgets to turn it on :D

    *Hands Down*, RME is, and always has been, imho, the best audio hardware manufacturer in the pro audio industry, Wytse. During the 1990's, my Hammerfall DSP System Multiface made me *very happy*. During the mid and late 2010's my RME Fireface 800 made me *very happy*. In 2019, a very good friend and former band mate, steered me to Avid Pro Tools Ultimate, HDX, Avid HD/IO, S3, Avid Dock. Shortly thereafter, I realized how *totally amazing* my RME gear had been, even with my "lowly" Multiface 1. That, AND it all if still fully functional and technically capable to this minute, and is only modestly dated.
    Everything about my "prior" RME environment was nothing less than spectacular: HW Reliability, Driver Reliability & Support, SW (TotalMix & all other), Tech Support, and in every other regard. Truthfully, if I did not have such a significant monetary investment in all of my Avid HW & SW, I would ditch all of it in a heartbeat and get back on board with all RME gear, "yesterday".
    ... "Don't know what you got 'til it's gone" ... ☮❤

    I have a really messy windows installation, so I do have to reinstall the driver after a win upgrade once in a while. But aside from that, my Babyface has been rock solid for years as well. You buy RME and forget about it. It just does it's job flawlessly. Even in a big installation like yours. Or bigger. Still the same TotalMix driver. Compare that to all the DADman routing and setups required for Avid workflows. Dunno. Not a fan. RME ftw!
