I have the same exact picks. I could also go G19 and P228 (P229), about the "same" as their bigger brothers. Good choices, but the reasons for the choices were the best. Every pistol fails; it has to. The West German welded slide models with the pinned breechblocks did have their issues and life expectancy. The breechblocks would break loose. Corrosion and cleaning were troublesome. The BDA/P220 and then the P226 and then the P228 were ahead of the game in the 70's and 80's.
@@0dayExploit i've heard that tuned LEMs can be VERY chill but it's harder to get LEM kits rn. i would fully cum if someone designed a single action trigger for the USP
I say it is a very sensible choice. If I must be limited to a traditional DA/SA it would be something like a SIG. The reason, aside of good track record in operational service, is the no nonsense way of using it. If I am already dealing with a DA trigger, I DO NOT WANT A thumb switch. DA first pull. SA follow up. Decock when done. Everything I need. Nothing I don't. That is why I do not want a CZ or Beretta. CZ also gives me the added difficulty of slide being harder to grab and manipulate. In my case, the DA/SA of my choice is something like an SP2022 over a P226, mainly because it gives me far better trigger reach.
Im shooting the P226 in league, took me awhile to get used to the transition from the DA to SA on the first target and still working on grip with it. Pleasantly surprised that’s one of Ben’s 2 picks
I am limited to only 5 because of my licence. Since I shoot IPSC and like steel framed pistols, my picks are a cz75b, cz75 compact, a tanfo stock 1, tando stock 2 and a 11.5 ar15. Still hoping you can do a video on cruiser weight vs light and heavyweight guns for production or carry optics. Been loving the channel output lately. Thanks as always for sharing so much. More power and success to you Ben!
I'll take my G47 with red dot, and (assuming I can't keep my Staccato P, then) a LTT Elite Beretta G model for the SA/DA gun. But the 226 is a solid choice and probably more reliable than any other SA/DA choice.
My P226 Legion is great. I’ve relied on various P226 pistols through the years, and the Legion has reduced-size controls to help those with issues interfering with them. It could be argued, of course, that “thumbs down” avoids such things in a life-or-death fight, but that is heresy today.
I carried the p226 in the NYPD 2002-2007 it’s an excellent gun even with the 12lb trigger. A lot of guys loved it due to reliability. Dudes also carried the Kahr k9 as their backup which wasn’t needed
i really loved my beretta 92 but in the early 2000's i got into 3gun and during the hot summer months we shot at night and the flimsy light mount for the early berettas was garbage. i was frustrated when beretta changed to having rails but by that time i had made the glock switch and was enjoying the extra mag capacity and lite weight. but still i look at the berettas and drool a little especially at the two tone onyx slide one.
I'm a CZ bro, I could easily have P10F and shadow 2 or instead of shadow 2, P09. If not that, for double single I could go Arex, but haven't fired them much
I ran 226/229 for a good long while. They all never had any issues, and were perfectly great guns. I am a bit of a CZ and Tanfo fan, but that mostly has to do with how the grip angle and trigger work for me on a personal level. But I see nothing wrong with this at all. Really had to beat them in most use cases outside of competition.
I have them both and if pressed I'd make the same choice. I did carry a 226 for work for 20 years so I may be a bit biased, but I've never owned a pistol I liked more.
G45 (19 slide on 17 frame) and probably Sig 365 Macro. I know, that’s two striker fired…… but it does everything for me. A duty sized gun that is super reliable, and a large capacity smaller framed gun for the concealed side.
P30 LEM and VP9. Reliable striker fired pistols are more alike than different. The VP9 is my choice because, trigger aside, it is virtually identical to the P30.
After renting a Beretta 92X and buying one for myself as a home defense pistol, I'd have to take the best DA/SA Beretta I can get. Maybe I'd get the GTS w/ a larger grip installed for my hands.
My first pistol was a P226 - an NYPD overrun gun that came with the blinged out nickel plated controls that I converted back to DA/SA. Shot that and a P239 for a while, the latter I stupidly sold to buy a G19. Went with Glock for a bit. Then to HK P30/P30SK LEM. Went Beretta about 4 or 5 years ago and still shoot 92s and PX4s. Seems like I always end up coming back to the hammer fired DA/SA guns.
Not a bad pick, I personally would pick the HK P30L over the 226 for simply one reason. You mentioned the West German made 226 is the good one. There is no distinction of what is a good P30 series. They’re all well made and have a decocker.
I'm with you on the P226. I have a legion P229 and it's a joy to shoot!. The G17 gen5; nope. I had one early and the trigger had a terrible creep even with a aftermarket trigger, and I hate the ergonomics of the glock grip angle. If I had to have a striker I think it would be a Walther PDP. Shot a friends and very impressive. I would be torn about giving up my Staccato P for the P229, but for a self defense and conceal pistol, have to go with the 229. Good vid!
I am a CZ guy most of the time but I understand. I own a P229 and at one point in time it was my only pistol. It does just run and run even with wacky ammo. I have one of the weird transitional ones with the German frame and Exeter slide with short cocking serrations. Would be nice if it was a classic W German but even so I'm still keeping it forever.
My p365x is made by the Wilson grip; it was a game changer for a gun I could already manage. Now it's enjoyable to shoot. Idk how much difference the tungsten inserts made but i kept them in. 15+1 of +p and I can conceal it with any clothes. I'm seriously considering going off-menu and getting Slovenia's 226, the Arex Alpha, but my top several choices for a hammer gun are revolvers.
P30 is really nice, especially with the LEM variant. Makes the double action first shot, not take so damn long. But maybe the USP would be better, just older with that rail and less mag capacity.
100% with you on the gen 5 glock 17 or 19. Gonna go way off the rails though on the DA SA option and say HK USP 45 Tactical. FWIW I also own a west german p226 and absolutely love it. The HK just has a special place in my heart because it's the first real gun I ever got to shoot.
The West German Sigs are good shooters. Used a P6 (P225) in IDPA in CCP before the rule change pushed the mag capacity to 10. Anyway, the gun ran well and shot well. Only complaint is extractor broke during a match but then again it probably had 3 or 4k rounds through it at that point so complaint has limits.
2 is too difficult. I think you did great choices. I would choose a Glock 19 and the second a Sig P226 or a CZ 75 (not decided yet). I really wanted to choose 2 more: a 1911 in .45 ACP and a Colt Python .357 mag. 😅
There is a tendency to accidentally hit the slide lock lever with my grip on a p226. It also needs a bit more routine cleaning than a glock. Great choice otherwise. I'd probably go full size DASA and a glock as well but probably go 43x
For me: Tanfo Steel Competition series (Stock 3, Lim Pro etc), and Tanfo Polymer Competition series. Why? They are great guns, and easy to swap calibers. I’m a little bigger than average, so I want a gun that fits my XXL hands, and can conceal them well. For competition only? Same answer, just to stick with a basic platform.
A Glock 19 and a Sig Rattler LT for me lol. The Rattler is a pistol anyway, am I right? But great choices. Thought for sure you might go with the CZ for your second one.
CZ P10F w/ RMR and CZ P09 w/ irons - both bombproof and use the same mags - not my choices for competition - but if I only had 2 I’d stick with this ecosystem .
Polymer: HK P30L LEM DA/SA: Manurhin MR73 Doesn't get more Rugged than a French Revolver, and I clearly don't care about the striker fire requirement so why should I care about any supposed semi auto one?
I'd be interested in your take on the Arex lineup. Delta compared to the glock. Zero compared to a 226 Alpha compared to CZ/Tangfolio I've got the Delta and it just works out better for me compared to a Glock. Obviously it's a subjective thing. And I've got the Grand Power X-Calibur. It's pretty decent. Would probably be better fit for purpose with an aluminium frame instead of polymer.
Thanks for the video. I have a question because of Red dots. Some companies bring out new red dots with bigger windows but in my opinion it’s irrelevant. As you demonstrated with patching up the window of a red dot. I think the material around the glass matters more, thinner is better to a certain point of course. What is your opinion about this matter?
I just can't bond with the CZ, and it disappoints. Every time I buy one, I go back and trade it in for a Beretta... for the vibe, and because it fit Paul Harrels hand better. My 2 picks... Sig 365, and Sig 226. Give the reddit warriors fits.
That's a very relevant question where I live because they only issue licenses limited to 2 guns initially. Stupid gun law that results in unintended consequences because a ot of ppl figure out their choice is wrong for them and dump their guns on the used P2P sales market . But, according to anti-gunners, citizen to citizen sales are veeeery dangerous... whatever... The usual choice over here for 2 gun Joes is a Glock 17 as well. 2nd one I'd say a CZ Shadow 1 or 2 for competing or an AUG for tactitard LARPing.
Glock and an open gun. 226s look great on paper, but the length of pull is too short for my hand size. I have to really contort my trigger finger in order to pull the trigger straight back.
In Chile, South America we are limited by law to having just 6 guns total. So most "gun people" have only one or 2 handguns, using the other slots for a rifle, shotgun, carbine, etc. Having one for defence and another for competition is quite common. Personally, I've been competing with my G19 for several years now (and relying on it for defense too) and I'm wondering if it's worth it to upgrade to a higher performance gun. Considering a shadow 2 for that purpose.
I would not use a Shadow 2 for defense as more maintenance is needed on them if you are competing and putting alot of rounds through it. They are great guns but really just meant for paper.
If you only get 2 then reliability is everything. I would go with the Glock 22 since I can change the barrel with a 9mm conversion barrel. That way I can shoot .40 or 9mm. Also the P226 is a proven battle tested pistol so it would be my second pick.
Not surprised at all. If you have to limit yourself to only two, then all the "flashy" and "gimmicky" stuff gets ruled out pretty quickly. You pretty much have to go back to reliability, reliability, reliability. Neither a G17 or Sig 226 are super flashy, but they both are well-proven and will get the job done.

I much prefer my P10 over my Glock. I do not like the P22x series ergos at all. DA/SA choice would be a tough one, would almost consider a 2011 type pistol instead. SAO is a legit option I think.
Glock 17 and either a 92 or a P226. The glock 17 is old Faithful and mine has thousands of rounds with no issue ane will be my tool to get me to upper A class this year. The 92 and p226 have proven themselves time and time again to work everytime you pull them out. All three of these handguns just. Work. CZs shoot great. After you get the throats reamed so you dont have to worrh about ammo getting stuck in the rifling or not. The p320 is a nogo for me. Not even going to entertain a debate. M&P2.0s are good too however the grip is too agressiv for concealment.

Finding common ground with Bruce Gray.
Thems fighting words.
Glock 47 because I can change it into a 45 size/type pistol if I would like, and a LTT Beretta 92 RDO.
Yeah for me G45 and some sick ass 2011.
A kid showed up at the match last night with a P226 and shot it extremely well.
I have the same exact picks. I could also go G19 and P228 (P229), about the "same" as their bigger brothers. Good choices, but the reasons for the choices were the best.
