    Great interview, my question is if being woke is used against us as if it's a vile thing, why is it not publicly embraced and explained to educate those who don't understand? By not saying "Yes I am woke because..." it's like we are giving the permission to use it against us! Why???

    While it is not known when being awake was first used as a metaphor for political engagement and activism, one early example in the United States was the paramilitary youth organization the Wide Awakes, which formed in Hartford, Connecticut, in 1860 to support the Republican candidate in the 1860 presidential election, Abraham Lincoln.

    Among the earliest uses of the idea of wokeness as a concept for black political consciousness came from Jamaican philosopher and social activist Marcus Garvey,[3] who wrote in 1923, "Wake up Ethiopia! Wake up Africa!"[3][6]

    Black American folk singer-songwriter Huddie Ledbetter, a.k.a. Lead Belly, used the phrase "stay woke" as part of a spoken afterword to a 1938 recording of his song "Scottsboro Boys", which tells the story of nine black teenagers and young men falsely accused of raping two white women in Alabama in 1931.

    To be "Woke" is to acknowledge when discrimination/injustice is happening around you in society today and when you see it ..don't turn a blind eye but call attention to it ...
    Its being culturally sensitive and understanding of the history and to the suffering it has caused for centuries

      It’s the ability to think critically about the systems in place that impact everyone. Some media outlets are confusing it with simply being a decent person, which doesn’t actually require an “awakening”; at least, not for people who are capable of thinking critically. Hope this helps!

    • @peckishpagan
      @peckishpagan Год назад +3

      Awakening-no. Awake- technically, yes. It originated during WW2 when minorities literally woke up to a ban on hiring discrimination in the defense industry. Tens of thousands of skilled labor positions opened up to all minorities (except the Japanese, of course). They wanted to “stay woke up” to opportunities for upward mobility (which were totally unheard of before that day). That executive order was a teeny precursor to the civil rights movement, where the term gained popularity in the context of paying attention or you’d fail to develop the new mental outlook that new situations demand. This is when it took on the definition of being critical
      of the world around you without losing your place in it.
