Interesting.. I'm taking a risk by disagreeing with the most prominent IELTS streamer on RUclips, but I'm not sure about this one, Adrian. This is not what I teach, nor how I understand the IELTS speaking band criteria. The specification is "situationally appropriate" at Band 9 for Fluency and Coherence; and I would understand that to coincide with the decades-long trend towards casual speech, such as use of 'gonna'/'wonna' etc., even in formal situations. Elliptical speech and conversation reduction (reduced clauses, not being excessively mute) is characteristic of native speakers and highly competent speakers of English whereas speaking with overly structured full sentences all the time would, to me, indicate an over-reliance on declarative grammar (indicative of a lower fluency level). If IELTS assessment are after more text-book style English, I am surprised no one has asked them to refine the public speaking rubric to reflect that requirement. Caveat... I've never worked as an IELTS examiner, but as a Cambridge English oral examiner, and these comments coincide with how we were trained and how I assessed candidates in the exam; other than that I'm looking at this as a linguist and professional instructor. Anyway... Cheers Adrian!
Hi Rich, this information is based on results, as well as when I took exam. For a band 7.5, casual English is absolutely fine, if you wish to be an "expert level" as indicated by the publicly available score descriptors, you must be professional, here is a quote directly from the score descriptors: "Develops topics fully and appropriately" and "Speaks coherently with fully appropriate cohesive features", and this one in particular under lexical resource: "Uses vocabulary with full flexibility and precision in all topics". None of these descriptors are indicating towards casual language.
@@Aehelp Thanks for the response. I don't consider topic development, cohesive features or lexical resource to be limited by formality. You can have a deeply developed conversation with a huge variety of cohesive features and lexical resource in a casual tone; and most native speakers do exactly that. An extreme paradigm of this would be someone like Brian Cox who discusses immensely complex astrophysics using lexis characterised by casual language. The reason for his popularity, is that is how most people speak, and so maximising that element has gained him worldwide recognition for doing so. So, I respectfully disagree. However, that's not to say that leaning into formality doesn't work too; as your results clearly demonstrate! All the best!
