Duets like these between the smallest and largest members of an instrument family are always fun for the novelty, but they're rarely actually very listenable as they're just too far apart tonally. This isn't a slight on the players, who are no doubt masterful musicians; it's just that these instruments' timbres really don't complement each other in a vacuum like this--the Ab's piercing sweetness vs. the contra's ponderous grunting--and the extreme distance between their ranges leaves a lot of tonal and harmonic space that, as a listener, you're wanting to be filled. It's kind of a jarring effect, but on the other hand, there's always something to be said for defying expectations!
Well said! The two clarinets together do make a jarring sound. If the contrabass's part was played an octave higher, I think it would have complemented the piccolo clarinet a lot more.
I love Contrabass instruments ESPECIALLY the Contrabass Clarinet and I think they should be more common in like band and other sorts such as a clarinet sextet
They're actually mostly in tune! That's because no matter how low the contrabass goes, the higher player can still tune to its very clear overtones - something much harder to do with the more complex sound of the contrabassoon.
