people just don't get how amazing the bass clarinet is.
I know right
Most band directors see it as a place to put the clarinetists who can't play. it makes me so sad because it's such an under appreciated gem of an instrument and it can add so much to an ensemble.
the same thing happens to tuba :(
@Louei Yockey @Devdeep Rajpal I've been first chair of clarinets and bass clarinets in my band for two years now. One clarinetist recently moved from another school and is now first chair clarinet (just clarinet) but I still hold the section leader position. There's absolutely no reason for anyone to be put on bass clarinet simply because they "can't play" clarinet. I also hate that it's not an easy instrument to make a living off of. Unless you're these two guys, if you play bass clarinet but not clarinet you'll never be accepted into an ensemble at the college or even the professional level. It's irritating. I feel like something needs to change
How can we bring about this change? It's apparent that the bass clarinet has more good qualities than bad as an instrument, That should be reflected in the way that directors see it and use it.
That's a LOT of music coming out of just two instruments! The dynamic range is incredible!
Layla Peachee I dont think so......
Technically speaking brass has an infinite range though after a certain point it’s literally impossible to go any higher
maverickdallas100 in my head i was like im waiting for you guys to INHALE
@@connorross6921 technically speaking, a squeak is a note, and if you can control the squeak, you can go as high as you want
Actually, we just work really hard on intonation. Bass clarinets have the potential to sound really amazing when played in tune, you just need to listen carefully to each interval. And if you listen to our studio recording of this piece, the intonation is just as solid.
It's true that playing in a big hall helps the sound, but it's also true that @teet4ever's band teacher is wrong.
squonkvideo - this is the best thing I've heard for ages ...
You are incredible!!!!
Im a bass clarinet player but i could not come close to this performance.
The sound is so big, it sounds like there's a room full of bass clarinets.
Add wings and eyes to your clarinet for extra style and stability.
Yep
Maybe it can play itself?
I play the flute in my school band, but one of my friends plays the bass clarinet and I LOVE the sound of it! Bass clarinets need more recognition tbh
I agree :) such a fun instrument!
Bass clarinet and Bari sax make the sexiest sounds.
+DVSKATE The Eb Contra-Alto Clarinet produces the same sound as a Bari Sax, a few lower notes even ;) check it out, I play it in our High School Band and march with it. 2 times the size of the bass clarinet and it's freaking awesome!
I played contra-alto for a while, so fun...how the Hell do you March with that big thing? lol
Muscles and will power! lmao. I am currently in a wrist splint from that exact reason, marching with it caused nerve pinches and wrist inflammation. I would not suggest trying what I tried😂
Excellent dynamics, musicality and tone, and the instrumentalists even manage to match the timbre of the organ - what a great bass clarinet "tour de force" !
As an avid Bach fan, a long-time love of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor, and as a Bass Clarinet player...I must say I think I died and went to heaven while listening to this.
I was put on the Bass Clarinet. I never EVER regretted it. I got compliments everyday from my fellow students on how they loved the sound. I simply loved the fact that it sounds exquisite on the low notes. And I do mean Low. Please consider playing this instrument :3
I am getting one in a few days. I'm 12 years old and my music teacher is trying to get me to play the bass
Zane Zinn
You really should. I got it and I loved it! There was a Contra Alto in my school and my teacher thought I was good enough to play it, and now I'm taking the Contra to high school. I am 12 as well.
Yes the same thing happened to me!
I switched to bass clarinet and I absolutely love it
I played flute before I went to bass clarinet and I've been playing for four years now, and I love it! But I do play other instruments like sax. barry sax. tenor, and last clarinet you can say I love playing different instruments but my main one is just the bass clarinet.
How can someone not love this!?!?
Oh how I love the beautiful rich tone of the bass clarinet. :-))))
I get shivers while listening to this, #JustClarinetPlayerThings
Yass...
Top 5 reasons why bass clarinet is the best instrument
If only bass clarinets weren't so expensive...
If only contra bass clarinets weren’t so expensive literally the lowest price I could was 5 and a half grand
Oof
It's only $14000 for a professional model (said in sarcastic tone)
I have a contrabass and when I got it I almost died
Take a look at Kessler & Sons' Las Vegas offering. Their Model 2 Bass Clarinet sells for a bit over $2,000. Michael Lowenstern reviewed it and really liked it.
Oh, and, I love mine!! If you got da dough, buy one o' dose BLACK Selmers. They only list for $22,000.00! That's Michael's main BC.
This is some of the best bass clarinet I've heard.... wow
Scrolling through the comments I see that no one is arguing
Unlike every other gaming RUclipsr I watch
U people are cool
And not total a total pain
@Tyguy80s they are tho
Great bass clarinet sound
About 10 years later I'm just finding this, bass clarinet deserves more respect
I'm a 5th year bass clarinet major and I play on a vandoran b50 mouthpiece with a v12 3 strength reed and a rovner vinyl ligature and I have a great tone and projection. I definitely recommend this set up on concert setting music. I play jazz bass clarinet, jazz tenor and jazz Bari sax but the tone I get from a true extended range concert bass clarinet it beautiful and it projects over a large ensemble. Definitely check it out and let me know if you have a better set up I should try
For concert bass clarinet i use strength 4 v12 with a arther grabnier mouthpiece. Which is a custom version of the b45. and a vandoren ligature. Has worked well for me.
+Erik Hose my b50 mouthpiece can't handle any reed more than a 3 strength easily. 3.5 strength reeds are usable but the mouthpiece is to open to use the reed correctly
+skittles72393 i gotcha. b50's are very open and great for jazz. A b45 or custom vandoren based mouthpiece is better for concert as it can sustain a higher reed strength and also has a more center tone.
+Erik Hose I may need to check that mouthpiece out. I would like a darker sound that I can't get from my mouthpiece
+skittles72393 its a good one.
I am actually in love with this
Everyone starts talking at around 3:30. Is that because they're turning to their friends next to them saying ''Holy shit that's amazing.'' ? I fucking hope that's the only reason.
exactly
it was prolly just one guy close to the mic
I am getting offered to play the bass clarinet and I really want to
Do it. It's amazing. I've been playing for 6 years. Best decision of my life.
Me too!!!
I never once regretted switching, take ito
It’s amazing and low f and e sound so good and you can play a little lower on some you can play 2 full steps lower than a regular
This is fantastic. Prodigious technique. Great job.
I play bass clarinet in school.... and it is really hard to go high like they did at the start
I'm a player of many clarinets and let me just say, that was played beautifully. Contra Alto Clarinet is also another one of my favorites along with the Contra Bass Clarinet. I play all of those currently. Man, that was great. I would've loved to have seen that live.
+Brii & Dee Contra Alto Clarinet produces a lovely sound. I play it in HS Band and I love it!
How much does a contralto cost as I would like to save up to buy one
Brilliant playing - these guys are so tight! They can make you forget how unweildy this instrument can be. In the hands (and mouths) of people like this the bass clarinet is one of the purest sounds any instrument can make ............ and, of course, JSBach was/is THE master.
How does somebody not like this?
Every time that I watch and listen to this. I am more amazed. Bravo! Fantastic! Bass clarinets rule!
This video gives me goosebumps in a good way
Omg I can’t love this enough
this piece is so uplifting, specially when played in the bass clarinet.
I play this for my school band and i go to allcounty for playing and i thought that was hard
I play Bass clarinet as well as Contrabass clarinet and both are extremely wonderful and deserve so much recognition
This is incredible
I just died of happiness. My favorite instrument and favorite classical song combined.
Look its a bass clarinet with wings!! :D But omg i heard your recording but I couldnt believe it until I saw it with my eyes! Amazing!
They are really good 👏🏾
That was fantastic!!!! bravo!!!!!
You guys are crazy good!!!
This is amazing. I would loved to have been there to hear it. I already can't stop listening to it in this video. Excellent!
i loved it when they sqwonked! amazing! the playing -- the sqwonks.
Beautiful performance
fanstastic sync and really nice way!!
I’ve been playing clarinet for 4 years and my instructor JUST recommended Bass clarinet because I’m such a “great player” I never knew there was a thing called the bass clarinet, I always loved the beautiful and rich the lower sound was on all instruments! I’m so excited
This is amazing!!
I love how the clarinets have wings :)
i own a bass clarinet and wish i could play half as good as these guys!!! this song and its composer are amazing!
I play organ since I was a child, but I got a really big crush on clarinet 2 years ago, I bought a classic Bb and I love it, now I'm planning to buy a Bass clarinet and I can tell you guy's you really got me with Bach! I never tought it could be as much beautiful with a clarinet! You are just incredible!
This is just amazing. I love bass clarinets so much :D And look at those wings :D
incredible playing guys!! nimble!
Fantastic!!
Those are so awesome
Awesome, I've watched several times and it gets better with every view.
I played clarinet, bass clarinet, and contra-bass clarinet and this video makes me miss it....
+Cody Albright OMG I play clarinet and Bass and I want to move up to Contra-bass! Any tips?
+Mikayla Rowland I play contrabass in band at the moment. A few tips I can give you is to expand your lungs. A lot. Like more than you would ever think to have to. Second is biting the reed is impossible in a sense that no sound will ever come out if you bite your reed. Third is that your embouchure will need to be larger and you may have to take in more mouthpiece. But remember, AIR IS EVERYTHING!
This video gets me jazzed up!!
There must be a God who loves us, otherwise this beautiful music wouldn't exist. Good lord man, this was absolutely beautiful.
beautiful
This is so cool I played the contra base clairanet In high-school for awhile
AMAZING.
Seems a wonderful choice to me,and very successful, a big Congrat's !! you guys & thankyou 'sqwonk' ,Wonderful musicianship & playing.
Impressionante! Davvero, complimenti!!
0:43 That range
why has no one commented on the fact that the bass clarinets have wings?
amazing !!!!
I wanna sound like this so bad it’s beautiful man I swear some parts sounded like an organ
I played a clarinet choir version of this, and got to do the Bb contra (with low C) part, so I was cranking out those pedal tones! But this sounds great with just two people!
This is incredible! Both of them have excellent tone, and the fingering is awesome too. I've been thinking of starting up bass clarinet, but now i REALLY want to get one (and learn this piece because holy cow it's amazing).
This piece is insanely hard and I wouldn't recommend it as you are starting on bass. However, if you really want a challenge, go ahead but I'm warning you, it's really hard.
go for it! this is my second year of bass clarinet and it's a lot more fun than a typical clarinet. sounds nicer too in my opinion. have fun!
I'm not saying you shouldn't do it, I'm just saying it's hard.
LOVE THOSE WINGS!!!!!!!!!
This is so fucking good! I actually like the bass a little more now
I miss playing the bass clarinet so much!
Phenomenal
Göttlich :DDD excellent, Love it, they're fantastic!
tis so awesome
Amazingggg 😊
Haha this is really cool. I play bass clarinet but I probably can't do this
Same
*sigh* Now I need to purchase a Bass Clarinet to play again. I miss that instrument
Amazing what you can stumble across on RUclips, surfing around after the witching hour. Captivating sound! Woodwinds resonate in harmonics of the wavelengths of DNA, I do believe. ;-)
Where can one find these extra long pegs featured in most of Sqwonk's videos?
You make it (or have it fabricated for you). Any good instrument repairman will have the materials and skill to make one.
wow! With respect and honors, as a fellow of the art, I wish I had at least a snifter of your talent. Keep playing!
This is pure awesome :)
simply WOW!!!!
9 people came here looking for fish playing clarinets.
My band teacher put me on the Bass Clarinet since I was almost always out of tune on the regular Clarinet. Ever since then I've never regretted it.
Bravo!! Bravo!! I like very much!!!
I still haven't figured out how to react to this.
i have a bass clarinet and when i got it, i didn't expect it to let me play in a orchestra and this is my first year and im already half as good for it
Wow. I'm speechless
Thats so cool! I just played it myself :) Greetings from Austria
woah... this is... EPIC! will I ever get that good???
Bravo!
Oh my god I love you people.
A friend of mine and I are playing this duet for solo and ensemble :D he has a low c attachment so it's going to be amazing!
It just doesn't seem possible that the original instrumentation of two bass clarinets can reproduce the feeling of a familiar massive piece usually played on the pipe organ with such great effect.
Wow!
very impressive to say the least technically but even more impressive is how your sound and tone did not suffer in the more technically demanding areas and throughout the piece.
Man, i love the bass clarinet. Im so glad i switched. I play on a vandore 3 and a half reed. I want to learn how to play that song.
Chloe B your reed size doesn't matter.
+Louella Lugo reed hardness
I think these fellows have rehearsed together, before. Beautifully performed. Wish the music stands had not blocked the view of their hands but, after all, it was not a lesson, it was a performance!
Love the sound of bass clarinet... should've played it in band. I play keyboard, alto sax and horn instead.
this is great :D i am desperate to get my hands on a bass clarinet.
@ekotar1 might have to, listening to this just reminds me of how much i love clarinets..
I personally own a B-Flat Clarinet
me and a pair of false teeth next to me watched this and now they're really pointy
and stuck in my neck
LOL!
