- In this video, I will disassemble, deep, clean and reassemble a Winchester model, 1200 pump action shotgun. This was a great old firearm that was made from 1964 till 2006. There were a lot of these older shotguns out there that are in really great condition that some people may not know how to do a thorough cleaning on them. I hope you enjoy this video and that you learn something from it and it was a value to you. If you did please like and share with someone that may need it. Go back and check some of my other videos out, if you like them, please considered subscribing to my channel and hitting the notification bell so you will be notified of future videos as I put them out. if you have any questions on any of my videos, please put it in the comments as I always answer them. Thank you for watching, Joe.

I love how educational this was. My grandpa owned this gun, and when he passed away, it became my gun. Thank you for this video.
You’re welcome and thanks for watching. When I make these videos, I try to be informative and make them as easy to follow as possible for those people watching. That way they get a grasp on how to do these things their selves.
Without seeing what actually happened it would be hard to diagnose the problem. Generally I haven’t seen many issues with the trigger group itself, but that doesn’t mean something couldn’t happen to it. Without being able to see it it would be hard to say what may have caused the issue.
Great video, i just recently came into possession of two of my grandads old guns, one being a model 1200. They havent been stored the best so theyre in need of some tlc, thanks to your video ill be able to clean it up myself
Well I’m glad you found it informative and enjoyed it. I have been working on firearms for many years even before I went to school for gunsmithing. I used to have an FFL in the late 1980s and early 1990s. I no longer work on firearms for a business, but because I use them for hunting and target shooting, I will be doing a few maintenance and cleaning videos on some different firearms in between other stuff on my channel. Thanks for checking it out. That’s a good old shotgun and should give you some great use.
I Really learned a lot by watching Your Video Joe, I purchased My 1200 Win. In 1971, I turn 73 on Sunday , I feel like You have presented Me with a Great Birthday Gift. Cheers from Ont.Canada.
Well thank you Larry. I’m glad you enjoyed it. I grew up just south of Ontario. My family owned fishing resort in Brimley Michigan. Just west of Sault Ste. Marie. I live there from 1961 until 1976 my junior year high school. I have a cabin in the upper peninsula on 26 acres in Paradise Michigan. My grandmother had a cabin on Mackey Lake, just out of Sault Ste. Marie Ontario. She had dual citizenship first Canadian then United States. Small world. And happy birthday to you.
My Pop just handed one of these old girls to me. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this vid.
You’re welcome. I hope it helps you when it comes to cleaning and maintenance to that fine old firearm.
Recently acquired a 1965 manufactured Winchester 1200, my old man's first shotgun. He gave it to me because he mentioned he wanted to sell it, and I told him I would break his kneecaps if he did. I probably cleaned 30 years of gunk out of this old gun tonight, thanks Joe.
You’re welcome. I am glad the video helped you. That is a great old shotgun and I know you will enjoy it. I will be putting up other gun cleaning videos and builds that I do. If you are interested, you can check them out also as I put them on my channel. I did go to school to become a gunsmith and used to have an FFL many years ago. Now it’s just a hobby and things I do for some of my friends.
Need to change your handle to Super Safari Joe! I’ve been disassembling, cleaning, and reassembling my late father-in-laws collection for the family. Without owner’s manuals. (I’m thinking there’s a lesson there. 🤔). Of all the RUclips channels this was the most informative, interesting, and most of all HELPFUL! Thanks!
My goal when I do anything on my RUclips channel is to make it interesting, easy to understand and helpful to those watching. I did take a gunsmithing course in the late 80s which gave me some basic knowledge of firearms. But yes, it’s always good to have a schematic of what you’re working on. It makes life so much easier. I’m glad you enjoyed it. Thanks for watching.
Great video ! Thank you ! Bought a 1200 Defender that had been in someone's closet for years ! But it's nice & clean now !
That’s great, they’re very reliable shotgun. Hopefully it will get some use now.😀 Thanks for checking out the video.
Excellent video. Thanks for sharing.
I am glad you enjoyed it. I hope it helps you. Thank you.
Sending you big thanks man for this from Czech Republic 🇨🇿. Very helpful video.
Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed it.
Good job Joe!
Thank you. I’m kind of in my element in that department.
I'm convinced, I'll search for gunsmithing screwdrivers/kit.
You will be glad you did.
Helpful video
Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed it.
That was such an amazing video on the process of cleaning the older Winchester 1200 model I have the exact same gun made April 1974 I would love to be able to have someone as knowledgeable as you do a deep cleaning on mine sir..!!
It may seem like a daunting task, but if you have any mechanical abilities it’s really not that hard to do. I tried my best to do it. Step-by-step so people could follow along. I am glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching.
I was waiting you to transform into Steve McQueen from The Getaway and start slinging some lead. God bless you and the family too.
Now, there’s a movie I’m gonna have to watch again. I haven’t seen that since I was a kid it was a great movie and I like Slim Pickins.
My mag tube has a long spring.
Typically shotgun magazine tube springs are longer than the magazine tube and compress so they have enough pressure to push the round into the chamber when the other one is ejected.
Nie video! Anyone know why my 20 ga won't extract a chambered shell unless it's fired?
There are a few reasons that could cause something like that. A worn extractor, dirt behind the extractor, a broken extractor spring without pulling it apart and looking at it it would be hard to tell. But that’s a good starting point.
17:56 I just got a 1200 12 gauge pump with s# 392715
Do you have any idea how old this one may be?
Winchester seems to have a lot of information on their old, lever action rifles, but not much on their shotguns. Everything I’ve read on them leans towards either they lost records or didn’t keep very good records on them so I wouldn’t know. Sorry I couldn’t be more helpful.
I have one also that is quite old. Came with two barrels one full choke and the other modified; both 28". Just began cleaning and thought I would look for a video of the re-assembly. This one is excellent! I obtained a copy of TM 9-1005-303-14before I did the disassembly. I noticed there was no "slide arm bridge retaining screw in mine. I have had it many years and fired it several times to pattern the modified barrel; it shot great and patterned excellent. I just ordered the "retaining screw" from Numrich and awaiting re-assembly for it to arrive. I have no idea if the screw was not there when I obtained the gun or lost when I had it but it always worked fine. That does leave me with one question, do I need to push back on the bolt to align the two holes or does the screw just press on the bolt surface? Your advice would be appreciated. Thanks again for a great tutorial!
Well, I’m glad it helped you. I have always been very mechanical. I am able to fix and repair a lot of different types of things. That being said, I did take a Mail order course on gunsmithing in the late 80s and I did have a federal firearms license for a while. I enjoy tinkering and especially working on firearms. Numrich is a great place to get new and used parts for firearms. I have been using them for 30 years. You should be able to get a lot more years of good service out of that old shotgun.
I saw your Winchester 1200 video shotgun and I’m wondering where the serial number is on that model shotgun. Thank you.
On most firearms, the serial number is on the receiver, either on one side or the other and sometimes on the bottom depending on the fire arm. This was a friends shotgun that I cleaned so I don’t have it with me. I hope that information helps you.thanks for watching.
12-16 or 20 gauge..... same procedure....? I've got 2 12 gauge magnum from 1968. Looks the same, have cleaned them and work excellent. But is the mechanics inside the same..?.
Yes they are the same.
@@safarijoesadventures thanks. 👍🇮🇸
@@ZiggyWolf-Jinx you are very welcome. I hope you enjoy using your shotguns.

@@marknelson1681 I’m not sure what you mean, I would need a little more information.
