Yes, Emily was perfect - but Bill also did what he does best. Both made the silence cry out loud (to those who have preserved their sensibility in this crazy world). In the end, as a fan of films and books, you realize that there is far less good and kindness in the world, in reality, than in books and movies. And, the evil in the world, is far more evil, and far more numerous, than in books and movies. When you finally see the world, and the people in it, for who and what they, and it really is, you stop wondering why bad things happen. You realize, that bad things happen, because there are so few morally good people in the world to prevent bad things from happening. That, in reality, people are far more horrible, corrupt, and downright evil, than you think. And that almost everyone, and every thing, have both a false front, and an alterior motive. And that a smile, can sometimes represent happiness, genuiness, and/or approval, but more often than not, is as empty, vacant and meaningless as the Chesshire Cats. And, more often than not, is a silent mocking acknowledgment of deceitfulness and/or apathy. And that, in essence, is what this story is about. That good and kind people, must either hide, in solitude and loneliness, or risk being destroyed by evil. Life, for the kind-hearted, do-gooders, is a very Risky business. You realize that H.P. Lovecraft, and his Dagon inspired works, represent something closer to, and more honest about, reality than Disney ever was. Then again, there is a darkness to Walt's original works that is not completely lost in even the shiniest and happiest Disney movie. Trust no one. Book readers club worthiness rating: 7 of 10
