Channel 4 HD is no longer available on Freesat in the UK after they fell out over money. It's still a FTA (free to air) channel though and it's not encrypted, so it's quick and easy to tune your Freesat box to receive Channel 4 HD in STB / Set Top Box mode as a non-Freesat channel. This also works if you have a standard, non-branded satellite receiver as well as an older Humax / Foxsat box.

It worked a treat. Settings looks completely different on older Humax, but I still got through it. On my Old Humax I can't record future programmes, but I can record live, so I can still watch without adverts, yeah:) I can't do that on the new one. Thanks for the vid.
Glad it worked!
Thank you so very much!! I have a Manhattan SX Freesat box which I bought from Argos as I already had a dish, it shows as channel 5002 on my box. I'm elated!!
Yay!
@@SwitchedOnNetwork You have to do it a different way on the Manhattan SX, but it works just like Liam said.
Thank you so much! Just used your instructions and they worked perfectly, thank you :)
Great to hear, glad it's working for you!
Brilliant, thanks so much
Awesome, this is a great hack and works exactly as shown, wonderful stuff and thank you for taking the time and effort to share it with us!
A pleasure to be able to help out, just sorry it's still required after nearly 3 years! Hopefully they'll kiss and make up again soon - especially as ITV1 and BBC2's HD versions have bumped higher up the guide recently, it seems extra silly to have Channel 4 SD on 104...
@@SwitchedOnNetwork it's back now on channel 126 happy new year ! 👍😁
Yes, at long last it reappeared a few weeks ago. Happy New Year to you too! 🎉
@@SwitchedOnNetwork only noticed it a few days ago ! 👍
Brilliant - thanks very much!
No worries - glad it worked for you!
Thanks! really useful and simple guide. It's a shame Humax make it such a difficult task to get to non-freesat mode in the first place.
It's fairly easy to find it in the menu - if it was more prominent, many folk would probably find it by mistake and get confused if they're not sure what it is :)
Humax is a shit show- customer care is woefully bad
Lost all my recordings on my previous version that my son and I loved( top gear)
Contacted them numerous times no joy
No choice but to buy a new one
Got this working on Manhattan Freesat receiver. It doesn't have the STB mode option in settings but you can input the frequency and symbol rate via the Manual Scan option. You can then just add the channel to your favourites list along with other Freesat channels to save switching between the two guides.
Nice one, my Virgin STB conked out so had to plug my Humax RM-108 freesat back in, different method than the way you showed it but got Channel 4 in HD until I get new virgin STB 👍
Ah yes, is that box from the pre-Freetime era?
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Not sure tbh
Got this to work on my 8 year old Samsung Smart TV as well. Nice one! Thanks for sharing. ☺
Awesome 👍
Excellent hack- thanks so much!
You are a legend, thank you so much :)
Thank you!
Brilliant!! Thank you.
Happy to help - crazy that it's still not been resolved between them 🙄
Thanks for this tip, works perfectly. Wife very happy now :)
It's actually back on Freesat now as standard, as of a few weeks ago. You'll find it at channel 126 :)
Thanks for this. Can watch ch4 F1 in HD now 😁 Worked on my cheapie manhattan freesat, which had a slightly different path to get to frequency input screen.
Awesome, glad it worked for you 🙂
Thanks I found this helpful although kinda wished you had of shown how to connect the wires from TV to the actual box
Thanks so much. Managed to set up on my Panasonic tv with built-in tuner. Is there also a way to get any more HD channels that arent available with Freesat.
Great, glad it worked! Yes if you just scan everything (instead of inputting those specific settings) then you'll find several more 👍
great video im just trying to setup a free sat box but i dont know what way to point the dish can you or anyone give me any help on this im in scotland uk
You need to point it to the Astra satellites at 28.2°E. you'll need a compass and a signal strength monitor!
#RestoreChannel4HDtoFreesat is the hashtag to use to air grievances regarding this issue. Thanks for the video showing how people can do this, but it is a tremendous inconvenience to not have it on the regular planner!
Thanks for that hashtag! And glad you liked the guide, yes it's a huge inconvenience and really quite ridiculous, hopefully by keeping the issue alive it will one day get sorted.
I have a Sky sat dish with a hybrid lnb to receive Freesat. I found on my Samsung 4k Smart TV that even though I dont have a Sky box that I can scan & get about 600 Sat channels including channel 4 HD.(Other free ones mostly relate to God ! ) I normally leave the Channel 4 hd on the sat untouched so if I want Channel 4 in HD I just use the Menu button on my remote to switch broadcast signal from Freesat to Satelitte . Simples. Would be nice to get 47 HD as well but can't have everything. Otherwise you could wait until the following day & watch it on All4 Catchup in HD.
I'm a 73 year old geezer, it's to complicated for me, I'll watch CH4 in standard definition, and as you get older it all looks the same anyway xxx
And likewise for me after a large glass of wine or a few too many beers 😂
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Or a couple of large scotche's
I'll have to wait a few years to acquire that taste I think 😉
Similar age to you and it's easy. Play the video and jot down the instructions and as it's often fast, pause the video at intervals.
Always an option, if you have an aerial and good reception. This, however, is free and takes 2 minutes!
On my Vu+ box I can record 4HD and it'll even appear on the EPG if I add it to a bouquet, albeit with no schedule.
That's because it's not "Freesat" the branded service...
I did it the long way.... switch to non-freesat mode, do a full channel search, get 600+ channels, scroll through and save the ones you want to your favourites list, e.g. the BBC HD ones and ITV HD etc, plus CH4 HD, don't forget to include your regional BBC and ITV versions, then save. Now your favourites list give you access to the Freesat ones you want plus CH4 in glorious HD, also the Guide should work. PS if you want to watch F1 live and for free.... get an additional dish and point it at astra 19.2, tune it into RTL and away you go... for sound, just tune your DAB radio to BBC 5 Live, for their live commentary. The dish kit cost less than £40 on Amazon and the DiSEqC switch was £5. The switch allows two dishes to be connected to one receiver. RTL have the F1 rights for 2019 and 2020 seasons, only downside...not HD
I'm considering dumping Sky and getting a Freesat box. Which older boxes are capable of recording 4HD? The box must also be capable of setting up future recordings.
The older models are I believe. Look for one that doesn't have the modern "Freetime" interface.
I have a Samsung QE49Q6FNA that has built-in Freesat. I have just done a tv setup and switched from Freesat to Satellite; it did find Channel 4 HD and approximately 580 channels, most of which weren't available. Is there anyway I can just tune into the normal channels and not pick up all of the others that don't work?
Hmm, I'm sure there will be although would have to have a play. The same broad principles should apply as when on a box. Can you get to a menu where you can enter in the details I go over in the video? Or can you choose which to save/delete?
Sounds to me like you've done a full auto scan after you changed to Satellite. Instead of that, just select manual tuning and then use the frequency settings in the video. This shouls just get you CH4 HD and 4Seven without all the other ones. The other option I had on my Samsung was just scanning for 'free to air' channels.
Hi can you add non freesat channels to favorites list and use the remote to flick channels. Many thanks
Not on the branded Freesat/freetime boxes, no, because you have to go into the other "mode" to access non-Freesat channels. I think on other satellite boxes you can, though.
I have a humax hdr 1100 and when I try this I cannot search for a channel. Everything is the same until I change to stub mode and to non-Freesat mode. After this I see a message the channel is scrambled and when I press ok, I get a message on the left side bottom of the tv : 5000 ITV border. I can change this into 5001 etc but I cannot choose ch4 for instance.
Have you already scanned for and saved C4 HD? It sounds like you're in STB mode, but not tuned into the right channel. Bear in mind the "channel number" for C4 HD, once saved in non-Freesat mode, will be 500x something...
It's really weird on my system settings on my Humax Freesat box only had two options automatic power down and standby mode
Hmm odd, what model box do you have?
Please don’t think I’m being selfish I need to ask just so I know. but have you a written guide so I can print it off and use it at my own pace . I’m going to try it so thank you for your hard work
I can produce one easily enough - give me a day or two and I'll post a link for you once I've updated the page on the website which contains this video!
Switched On Network aw thank you that’s really kind of youxi
Here you are! www.switchedonnetwork.com/2018/09/28/how-to-get-channel-4-hd-back-on-freesat/
on my box which is not a humax, i cant get the sound for ch4hd
Hmm, how odd! That's a pain, let me know if you manage to fix it, I'd be interested to know...
This is very helpful but can you do the same for All 4?
Well All4 is an app/Internet video service so it isn't something that you can tune in via satellite frequencies like a channel. I'd advise something like a Chromecast device for your TV and then you can install the All4 app on your phone and cast to the TV.
While faffing about in non-freesat mode I found some music channels too like NOW 80's.
Ha yeah there's lots of other good stuff to be found :)
Does this work on the latest 4K Freeview Arris box?
As long as it's a Freesat box (not Freeview - that's for receiving signals via an aerial rather than a satellite dish) then yes it should do. I've not got one of the newer boxes myself so I don't know if the menus are hugely different, but as long as you follow the same concepts you should be able to tune it in on the frequencies in the video. Let me know how you get on!
Yes it does work, but when you switch back to Freesat you have to go through the setup again.
Oh that's not ideal, is there no way to save the scanned channels?
It takes you back to entering your postcode and logging in to their system, which you can skip. You lose your favourites too.
How strange! Sounds like it's all very different on the new boxes.
Any idea how to do this on and lg TV? No option allows a frequency this low
Hmm that's odd, what happens when you type in 11126? I don't have an LG TV with Freesat so can't test I'm afraid
@@SwitchedOnNetwork nothing, it refuses to accept it. I'll play around with the aerial to see if it's a reception issue.
@@wsurfa
There’s your problem.looooooool this is related to satellite not a aerial
@@dcb01 The aerial is a sky dish on a 4m tall scaffold pole, so thanks for your 'help'. Looooooooooooooooooooool
@@wsurfa
Got 4 HD using Astra 19.2E frequency 9750/10600 satellite. Only thing was there was a massive download of all region channels as well so you have to find the channels for your area and use the skip facility to remove them from the guide. Good luck
In my opinion, the Freesat "4K" devices are quite redundant since (to my knowledge) there aren't any unencrypted channels broadcasting in ultra high definition.
That's true, but they're positioned as an all round media device so you can stream 4K Netflix, RUclips etc. to your TV even if there are no broadcast channels in 4K (yet).
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Fair enough, I'm not in the UK at the moment so I can't test the new boxes at the moment. Have a great day :)
I bought one recently. I'm a bit disappointed with their performance really. Very underpowered and a bit sluggish when going through menus etc. Definitely cheaped out on the components and spec hardware wise, which doesn't justify the relatively high cost! Have a great day you also 😀
For some reason my tv went through 796 channels after following all the instructions and took forever to load. Could not find any way of searching for Channel 4 amongst them so gave up. The instructions were super clear until I got near the end.
Oh no, that might have happened if you made a mistake in the settings you entered, so were telling it to scan all frequencies instead of just the specific one. Try again and be sure not to miss out any little steps. Good luck!
@@SwitchedOnNetwork I will try again when I have calmed down! I was sure I had done the right things and kept going back on the video to check. Anyway, will try again and let you know how I get on. When I was trying to get back to live tv Channel 4 came on and I had a job getting out of it! New Tv, new problems!
Doesn't work on my new Freesat 4K recorder box, doesn't allow me to put in the numbers at the top ! i can change all the other settings Horizontal/Vertical etc.
Hmmm that's a shame, I thought it should still work on the new ones as I think I've heard of people getting it to work. I can't try it myself unfortunately as I've not got one of the new boxes!
my Humax Freesat box only shows power saving under system settings. What can I do please?
Is it an older one? The concept is the same but you'll have to look for where it is in the menu, I don't have another box to look myself I'm afraid.
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Its a HUMAX_HDR_1100S but I think they must have change the firmware.
Oh right, I thought they were the same but maybe not. Is there a "Freesat" button on your remote? I think if you press that you'll then have an option to enter the non-Freesat menus...
@@SwitchedOnNetwork Hi and thanks for your reply. Did a reset and pleased the options are now the same as your video. Now able to get Channel 4 HD. Many thanks.
When I click on system settings I can only configure the power saving settings, nothing else there
Are you currently recording anything? A lot of options disappear when recording is taking place, to avoid interrupting
@@SwitchedOnNetwork
I see
Thanks
Does this work on Freesat HD
Yes 👍
Hello, may i use the same Non Freesat mode to receive german channels?
If your dish is pointed to an appropriate satellite, yes. I have a second dish and Input1 to my box uses a DiSEqC switch to select that dish when in that mode
@@SwitchedOnNetwork can it be a sky dish?
yes - the only difference with a Sky dish is it says "Sky" on it :)
@@SwitchedOnNetwork you are the best thank you
Great, if you want to wipe all your saved normal channels. I had to setup my box all over again when I tried to switch back to the freesat channels.
That shouldn't happen. What box do you have?
Shame we cant get the catch up in the same way.
Yeah it's annoying they pulled that too. Have you got a Chromecast? If so you can install the All4 on your phone and cast to the TV...
Use an old sky box it’s already on there
Yes, it's only been removed from Freesat EPG not in the Sky one.
Does not work with our box. Just changes to e4 channels.
Channel 4 HD is back on Freesat now, at channel 126 - so this guide is now redundant.
YOU DONT NEED TO DO THIS 2021/2022 IT'S BACK ON FREESAT CHANNEL 126 ! 👍👍👍👍
Yes, finally!!
@@SwitchedOnNetwork yes I was surprised looking through the channel's the other day and seeing it back I have been watching channel 4 HD on the non Freesat channel since they took it off which a lot of people didn't know you could do ! 👍🎄
Yeah I only noticed when someone else commented here because I had mine all disconnected whilst doing some work in the living room so hadn't noticed at first :)
does not work with the new 4K Freesat box.
Ah I've not got one of the new ones so haven't been able to test. Apparently you can't yet add non-Freeeat channels, so I don't know if this is something that's going to be added in a firmware update in the future? I've just tweeted them to ask, might be worth you doing the same!
What about freesports hd ???
If it's free to air then if you just scan the whole lot (don't put in the details for C4HD) then you should find it 👍
@@SwitchedOnNetwork cheers
Channel 4hd has returned to freesat it is there 3 weeks now
Finally!! 🥳🤣
this does NOT work. I have a non recordable freesat box bought in 2022 and the frequency category does not allow any selection. it just does not respond to any nos pressed on the remote.
Is that the new 4K box? The steps would be different on them. I've recently bought one (the 2TB recordable one) but obviously as Channel 4 HD has been back in the Freesat EPG on Channel 126 for a while now there's no need to manually tune so I've not tried.
Again, I repeat. The instructions to add all4 to my 'non-recorable' freesat box!! do not work. The frequency change part is greyed out and cannot be toggled or changed. All4 is NOT available in the list available to add.
All4 is an on-demand streaming service that uses the Internet, it's not a channel that can be tuned in via a frequency on your satellite dish. I'm as confused as you are as to why All4 hasn't yet returned to Freesat boxes. In the meantime if you have a Chromecast, you can use the All4 app on your phone to cast the programme to your TV.
If you had read the FULL history of the initial comment you would have or at least SHOULD have, understood that the issue is not my comprehension of what kind of broadcast is used for All4 nor how a satellite dish works! The issue is, the instructions given in the u tube video I referenced,to install the channel ( as it is absent from my new freesat box) DO NOT WORK. They are invalid/wrong/ out of date/ incorrect. I don't need explanations on what a satellite dish does.. My post was advisory, so that whoever put the utube video up, would either remove it or update it as it in invalid... Got it? PS. I don't have chromecast or any other life sucking gadgets as I have a life..I just happen to live in a digital tv reception blackspot with zero reception so wr all have to obtain channels another way, so please more info on chromecast, the broadcast rights of All4 or anything else.
1) I did read the history of the comment
2) It's "RUclips", not "utube"
3) Why were you complaining that All4 didn't show up then?
4) Why are you so rude and unhelpful when I'm here giving you FREE friendly advice and answering your questions/comments for ZERO personal gain or profit?
5) It's an old video, released before your box was manufactured. But it has a date on it and RUclips viewers are intelligent enough to understand this and not get in a tizz.
6) Why are you even mentioning All4 when the video is about the HD linear broadcast channel?
7) I'm glad you have a life so don't want a Chromecast yet you do want to watch TV. That's a bit confusing but then you've not made much sense overall.
This is very very confusing and then directions are way too long
They're only and exactly as long as they need to be, as that's what you have to do. Which bit did you find confusing? I'll be happy to explain and clarify for you 👍

I think it was his way of saying “Thanks for your effort “ but was struggling with saying it!
Who says you can't get it I can on my box labgear hdsr 300 someone is lying
Is that a Freesat branded box with the Freesat EPG, or just a free-to-air satellite receiver?
That's nothing to do with it the box receives from astra satellite 😀
@@SwitchedOnNetwork its a satellite box I have a Manhattan sx freesat box also and can only get channel 4 SD not HD on my labgear hdsr 300 I can get more channels including channel 4HD so where is my box picking up the 4HD channel from
That's got everything to do with it. Freesat is a branded platform, it's not just "all the free channels off the astra satellite". Channels pay them money to feature in the EPG, and higher up, more prominent places command a higher premium. For example, Dave has only recently "launched" on Freesat, which just means it's now in the EPG. Then there's also the On Demand apps which networks pay Freesat to feature.
What you have, my friend, is not a Freesat box. I'd respectfully suggest you do some reading up before you randomly accuse people of lying 😀
@@SwitchedOnNetwork the channels I receive are free I don't pay for them
