I explain it to my wife as the sound you hear when you put a sea shell to you ear and then add a faint high tone ring in the distant background.
I didn't know there was a diagnosis or medical term for it until recently. I now understand why I've always needed a noise machine and fan running in the background to sleep...it all makes sense now.

I first noticed it in my 20’s when I’d be in a totally silent room. Funny thing is, I thought it was just normal and that the hissing was “my hearing cleaning itself out” and therefore healthy, therapeutic. This mindset helps me embrace it. I like putting in earplugs, or sitting in the silent interior of my car just listening to it and observing it. Who knows, maybe it’s just an indication of the hearing organs getting a rest because of the absence of having to constantly process ambient noise?

I might do that! I hear white noise & I just realized that it was always VERY worst after a 9-10 hours shift in the bar w/ constant loud music. But maybe I never really noticed my tinnitus because I always unwind w/ either a movie or whatever show I am watching at the moment & falling asleep on it, but one day I hadn't & oh boy, I was like " the sound/music must have been extra loud today" but then realized that sound(s) muffles your tinnitus & it had there the whole time since I don't know when!

I have had this since I was a child. Some times loud, some times quite and, sometimes the pitch changes. I always thought it was normal. That it was the "sound of silence" until my early teens when I asked my mom why the silence was so loud sometimes. I had to explain and off to the doctor who said I had nothing. Too expensive of a Dr.'s visit to be told I was trying to get attention. Never seeked medical help since, but sometimes I feel like I am going crazy.

Mine is a mix of: Ringing, crickets & hiss. And sometimes I hear random high pitched tapping sounds, like you would hear underwater when banging small rocks or stones together. I learned to live with it. Sitting around thinking about it is the worst you can do for it. Stressful situations and/or being alone can intensify the awareness and level of T. Masking sounds don't work for me. Just a "good" attitude. And knowing there's always someone worse off than I. God Bless you all.

I’m 72 and have had this very quite wave sound for years and yes only when it’s quiet do I hear it. I compare the sound to like when you were a kid and held a shell to your ear to hear the ocean. The sound was so quiet that you had to concentrate to hear a very soft wave sound. Until about 5 years ago, I thought that it was completely normal to hear that sound. It doesn’t bother me, but I think I will mention it at an appointment I have with the ENT in a couple weeks.

I am 66 years old and have had Tinnitus for as long as I can remember. Mine sounded like crickets chirping on a summer's night and it was always comforting to me. In 2011 I got Vertigo and the crickets went away but then I had a really high pitched noise similar to your jet engine sound. I really missed the crickets and could hardly stand the new sound. Jan. 2019 I went onto a plant based diet and after a few months the sound was still high pitched but not as loud. There were two nights last year (a few months apart I did not document it) I woke up in the middle of the night with the feeling that there was something wrong. After a few minutes I realized what was wrong - everything was very quiet there was not ringing in my ears. Unfortunately it only lasted for about a day and a half each time - but the sound is still high but for the most part is is a lot quieter.
Has this happened to anyone else? And is this normal? Any insight into this would be greatly appreciated.

Occasional spikes in increased loudness are common. Your experience of a few days with significant silence for multiple days and then the tinnitus returning is not common. Tinnitus is an ever-changing condition. Good to take note of the situation but from your history it doesn't suggest a specific treatment or red flag of any sort.

    • @LPCLASSICAL

switch back to standard diet and see what happens. The improvement is not necessarily linked to the plant based diet. B12 is good for tinnitus - and plant based diet you will need B12 pills. My T is always better after pork beef chicken.

Sometimes I have ringing, sometimes jet engine, but sometimes I have a rushing/whooshing sound that matches the outflow of blood, and that goes along with the sensation of pressure in my neck or head. I also have a flicking noise in my ear that I can't quite hear normally, but if I put ear plugs in I hear it clearly, and I can sometimes quiet it by stretching my jaw muscle/opening my mouth wide. I think this flicking noise goes on throughout the day and is just below the level of hearing, but I think it maybe causes exhaustion. I'm also extra sensitive to noise, and loud noises like sirens and alarms actually hurt. A noisy day will exhaust me for sure.

I've had Tinnitus all my life. 24/7, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. It never stops. As a teen, albeit completely annoying, I thought everyone had it until it came up in conversation and stunned my mother. That's when I learned that's not normal.
But I was also experiencing vertigo ... which I didn't know there was a name for it ... but noone ever knew what it was.
The tinnitus always sounded like a mix of cicadas and white noise or waterfalls.
As an adult, I'd say starting in my late 20's to early 30's other sounds started coming in. Sounds like a rumbling train along with the cicadas and other stuff and also the train horn/bell thing for lack of the actual word, lol. Then, first starting in my left ear, I began having really random moments where the entire orchestra in there shifted gears, stop completely and was replaced by one single shrill high pitched tone exactly like number 1. Only in my left ear at yhe time and lasted for maybe 30 secs to a minute ... very loud initially and then fading over those second or minute.
Also, that was all I could hear in that ear until the normal tinnitus returned. Now, within the past 8 years or so, it happens randomly in either ear ... not both at the same time though. I have been diagnosed with menieres since about 2010. Vestibular testing showed declining Vestibular function in the left ear. I was once treated for bpv but that never worked. I do get dizzy if my head is below my shoulders, or if I am standing and look directly up to the sky/ceiling. I get what I call occasional head buzz's where it feels like a bumble bee went through my head making my head and vision buzz. That's kinda hard to explain ... Dr's usually look at me with a blank stare when I try to. The tinnitus though .... at this point, when I hear a sound I don't recognize, I will think before I speak to determine if it is really a sound or just another tinnitus thing. Otherwise I will look like a nut job by reacting to it. Well, my left ear just reminded me not to forget about the beeping morse code.

This must actually suck so much. I had a buzzing noise recently last more than it should (for probably like an hour). Going to bed fixed it. The next day I got the same buzzing noise in my ear but this time it lasted way longer. Going to bed fixed that one too, but I got it again shortly after waking up. I really hope it's not permanent. I once had it for more than a week (ear wax build-up) and it was unbearable, especially when falling asleep. It really weighed down on my mood back then. I can't imagine living with it your whole life, especially with the side effects you mentioned. For now, mine comes and goes but if it stays, I guess I'll have to get used to that.

Or just my cautiousness fade away, I do not know. But when it is came back its like turn a volume up gradulally. One of the best similiarities with refigierator sound (compressor). I know some tinnitus sufferer who feels the same. Even more, I know some of them who weake up night at first time the T sound. and he can hear the refigerator but the T as well. Interestingly some months before my T first time poped up, I became very sensitive for high pitch sounds like AC or special IT devices (office routers). That is definietly an ingredient the high pitch enviroment noises + stress= tinnitus may occure.

It'll come along with a lot of pressure in my head and it feels as if a machine nearby is projecting those loud sound waves 😓

It's also better since I practice a lot of upper neck and back massage. But mostly upper neck. I feel the tension in my temps when I massage this region. I have severe anxiety problem etc so I think its related to tense muscles. Would explain the Osscle bone thing too, there is a lot of tiny muscle there. I have some physiotherapy for tinnitus next month, hope it will help.

I m staying positive and practice deep breathing. what i notice is if you dont focus too much eventually your brain will adapt and did not trigger for reaction on tinnitus sound. Mine is similar to the high-pitched sound in the Jet Engine sound except even higher in pitch and somewhat like the tea kettle sound. The tinnitus I have has two tones at the same time - a constant extremely high-pitched tone, and a constant slightly lower tone that sometimes increases in volume and clarity, then reverts to the blend of the dual tones. I also have a near constant problem with Musical Ear Syndrome in addition to moderate hearing loss and the tinnitus, all going at the same time.

Hi Dr. Thompson. I was in a motorcycle accident a little over four years ago, resulting in both cerebral and vestibular concussions, and have had very loud tinnitus since that time. I have been to an audiologist and attended a tinnitus clinic, tried different hearing aids, etc., and nothing has made much difference, so I simply have learned to live with it. When you ask us to comment regarding what our tinnitus sounds like, at first, as I listened, I was surprised that I could not hear #1 (ringing) no matter how loud I turned up my computer. I could hear all the others, but not #1. It struck me (I am a counselor and I teach psychology) that perhaps the reason I could not hear it was because my tinnitus was exactly that sound, and was therefore masking it. So I got out my headphones, jacked the volume way up, and low and behold I could barely hear it - same tone, just ever so slightly louder. I wanted to share this with you in case others might experience the same thing as they listen to the 10 different sounds. If your tinnitus is exactly like one of the ten, you may be like me, and simply not hear it because your tinnitus masks it. Thank you so much for your video.

My ear frequencies are beautiful sounds of various high and higher pitches, sometimes chord like, then a soothing soft solo, they get wavy then change speed of wave like a golden ratio in proportion. They alternate ears a lot but sometimes play at once. I often stop and meditate in a quiet area just to hear them better. My hearing is sensitive, I can decipher pitches well as I play music by ear. Sometimes I hear music I've never heard before when no music is playing. Not crazy, lol. I'm an occasional therapist by day.

once I had #1 , that ringing, after a real sound injury, combined with cold air and constant stress of many months long. It has been treated with meds and infusions and went away. But a hearing loss of 5% remained on my left ear.
10 years later , I suffered on a burn out for two years long. In that time the ringing came back. Sometimes on one ear, sometimes both. Sometimes it was a high pitched ringing E, sometimes a louder but middle tone soft F,F#,G,G# or A. It only stopped when I managed to calm down. Another 8 years after that, I suffered on a burnout again. I learned how to tell my ears to relax. They listen and now I can controll that ringing. However, there is something new which I blame on 4G antenna on the roof, the router in my appartment, my smartphone and the WIFI of my Tablet next to my bed. Its different than the tinitus noises, its more silent and not really coming from the ears. It feels more like two tiny thin wires from the ears to the center of the brain which causes this permanent sound which I cannot control. It sounds a little like #7 "electrical noise" except its clear without any white noise or hearbeat. Its like a simple high C , calm, silent, faint but constantly present. Its much louder in the morning, mostly when I forgot to turn off all WIFI devices and when my neighbors are at home, using theit WIFI ... some headphones make that sound too, when you plug them into the stereo but have not pressed any play button yet. Then you can also hear a silent high pitched noise which tells you the headphone is online

First wave covid long hauler. My tinnitus is the ringing and electrical noise type. It’s constant since mid 2020. I’ve found that water noises and crickets are great white noises that help ‘cancel’ out the ringing. It gets worse when my other long covid symptoms are worse - especially with insomnia and migraines (ironically I’m more sound than light sensitive with migraines … so migraines makes tinnitus worse which makes a migraine worse…. )
I’m learning to use tinnitus as an early warning system for when I need to take a work break.

Close to ocean roaring with a slight hint of puls. Had it for a few years with rising intensity. One ear and it starts and stops with movement, stress and if its quiet. I cant hear anything when it starts so its often impossible to have an normal conversation, see a movie or listen to music. Had a specialist look at it and got back that the ear looks okay, possible loss of the 10hz spectrum but close to normal.
The only solution I found is intense body training. Getting the puls up gives me about an hour or two of peace that feels like a lifetime. Stretching or holding my nose to decompress my ears with air helps to for a few minutes. For a strange reason it makes my tinnitus ear sound like a dog toy.
My friends tells me that what I have is impossible, kinda depressing. So i finally youtubed my problem and found this short clip.

I suffer from low frequency tinnitus, which sounds nothing like the sounds in this video. The sound I hear, every night, is around 40 HZ, and does have a steady rhythm, a bit like the motor of a fan. I’ve been suffering from this since late 2019. I had my hearing tested in a soundproof room at the hospital, and was told that my hearing in the low frequency range was slightly off the chart (acute), especially for my age, which was 55 at the time of the test, but that my hearing at the higher frequency range had deteriorated slightly. At the time of the test, I did not have tinnitus, but I did have a neighbour who played his music all night long, and the bass kept me awake at night. I managed to record the bass that was coming through the walls, so I know it wasn’t tinnitus. Living next door to this was hell, and I’m aware that I’ve become highly sensitised to any low frequency noises, such as cars going past my property at night, or planes flying overhead. Those noises seem much louder than before. I haven’t been diagnosed with tinnitus, but I can’t record what I hear, even when it’s really loud. Can this kind of tinnitus be caused by being subjected to bass, from music, coming through the walls?

I've had tinnitus since way back in childhood. It's always been there, so I thought it was normal. It always sounded like ringing/cicadas. But more recently, I started hearing a high pitched Morse code type of sound on top of it as well.. like tones/beeping. I also get the heartbeat pulsatile sound but only during a migraine attack/pulsating headache.
Edit: I thought I may add... While I've had the tinnitus since childhood, I only started getting fullblown migraine attacks (with aura and pulsating headache) in my late twenties. (I may have had visual migraines without headache in childhood, though.) And my perception of the tinnitus gets louder during my migraine attacks or when I am sick with fever.

I've had the heartbeats since youth. I'd hear them while my ear was pressed into a pillow. The intermittent buzzing started yesterday during a nap and hasn't gone away. I went through the entire house checking on electrical items including the meter and finally shut off the breaker to find out it's me. I noticed if I tilt my head during the buzz sometimes I can get it to go away.

Mine kinda switches around, sometimes it’s a jet engine sound, sometimes a hissing tea kettle, and sometimes ringing. It’s not as loud or high pitched, at least not all the time, but it annoys me so much. It makes me feel insane and crazy.
And what i hate is that it’s probably my fault. I listened to music on my headphones and earbuds so loud for about 3 years, and didn’t take care of my ears. I’m 13, and I wish I didn’t do this to my ears. Please take care of ur ears everyone!!

I have several overlaid sounds that change in their order of dominance and none of them sound like the sounds you played but more like ice crystals hitting glass with varying intensity with a soft pulsatile ocean noise. My tinnitus is somatosensory so these noises change according to the tension in my neck and back muscles but also with cortisol level. I have days when it goes away completely for most of the day, usually following a bad noise level in the middle of the night due to strain on my neck during sleep or jerking my neck when I turn over. The only solution I have is to sleep swinging from my feet like a bat but that would not work due to blood flow to the neck. I have some loss of hearing in one ear but since it goes away completely at times I do not believe that is a factor. When I first got tinnitus I found the best relief from recording the sound of my shower and playing it into the ear that has some deafness through a Bluetooth phone earpiece. I would advise anyone new to tinnitus to get their neck checked by a chiropractor as the head forward position from computer and mobile phone use is the main factor in somatosensory tinnitus.

      @tahlsx605 Год назад

I just came across this and tbh, this feels super similar to my experience, the soft, pulsatile ocean noise you describe. It can go away entirely, but sometimes it comes back and when you mentioned the neck issues, it made so much sense to me. I have suspected TMJ disorder, plus issues with my neck this year, and it all just seems to line up. I had a bad neck today from the way I slept, and I've had more of the sound. I will investigate further with it, but yeah, this comment really helped.

Although there’s a lot of different sounds it’s usually quiet enough for me to tune out, although I’m generally pretty good at tuning out noises
