      If you're talking about the "Bloody Edition", that was me! It was the first and only "hack" I ever made, just a simple color swap to reinstate the red blood color, as originally intended by the developers (who said so in interviews). If I ever have time and the ability, I will do the same for Splatterhouse 2.

      Another one of the great games that helped make the Genesis what it was. Its powerful 68000 CPU, sound, and 512 colors made it possible to bring awesome gore fest games home to play with others and gross out your sister... or your friend's sister.

    The opening of Splatterhouse 3 is absolute phenomenal, and it’s one a 16-bit console of all things. Even Rick’s terror mask is awesome. Not to mention, that the body horror in this game is downright ridiculous here.

    Completely underrated series, I love all Splatterhouse games.
    They are gruesome, relentless and don't shy away from heartbreaking endings that punch you right in the nuts. Even the Remake on PS3/360 (play the 360 one!) is awesome with a killer Soundtrack from Terrorizer and other Grindcore / Death Metal Bands.
    Such a shame it never gained enough popularity....

    I loved this game as a teenager. My mom didn’t want me playing violent games like this or Mortal Kombat, so playing this over a friends house gave it that added “forbidden fruit” appeal. It was one of the bloodiest games I’d ever seen at the time. As far as negatives, the special moves were too difficult to be worth it and the timer was laughably too fast each level. I’m sure if I had time to beat it more than once, I’d have gotten better than the worst possible ending, but a win’s a win. Still a great game.

    This game was a pleasantly scary surprise that I discovered while ROM-surfing during my broke college student days. I think the gross monsters and beat-em-up mechanics are pretty awesome, though some of the settings in the house are also neat too...though I do have to admit, some of them are pretty boring (my favorites are Mike's room, the eldritch temple at the last level, and the balcony where you start the second level) Some work on these areas would've improved things. You get a pretty awesome move set, a gross ambient horror, and awesome creature designs.
    I'm also biased for this game as well because I was born in and spent most of my life in Connecticut. The state is actually high on the paranormal scale in terms of events; you'd also be surprised how many indie horror games take place in Connecticut too! The FAITH series, Mortuary Assistant and a third one I can't remember had settings there (the latter most was a surreal game that was in Ashford, CT)
    And of course Rick and family moved there, that's where all the rich jerks go 😂

The violence it produces really impressed me at the time, so that gory vibe it was enough for me to never care about the poor backgrounds. I can't imagine how much gory it will turn today if Namco will ever release it as an updated version with some really spooky and bloody backgrounds.

      There was actually was a modern Splatterhouse reboot, it came out for PS3/360 back in 2010 and defintly worth checking out if your a fan of the series. It was actually pretty good and instead of a side-scrolling beat'em up it played more like a God of War/Darksiders. definitely kept up the scary ambiance and levels of violence (also had a great soundtrack featuring a ton of death metal songs). But it didn't really sell that well, so it unfortunetly never got a sequel and was quickly forgotten about.

    This was a game I was SO looking forward to as a kid, as I loved the orignal two but always felt them just a bit lacking compared gameplay wise to other similar games...So when I heard there was a third game coming out and it was changing things up and supposedly a bit more complex gameplay, I was over the moon. Alas, the game implemented one of my personal biggest gaming pet peeves, a time limit and a extremely strict time limit at that!
    I get that time limit is supposed to make things more intense and convey a sense of urgency, but in my case it came across as more of a detriment and a con instead of a pro. As trying to keep up with the crazy time limit made it much harder to enjoy all the cool artwork, enemies, and music that were always a big part of what made Splatterhouse series so fun and unique. Plus, it made most of the house kind of pointless, as if your really wanted the best ending there was really only one "right" path to take. I would've much rather have been able to go around the house and explore it.
    I mean, I know you don't necessarily "have" to try and get the best ending, and part of the fun is trying to get all the endings, but it's never fun to play and finish a game knowing you really didn't actually "beat" it. While overall I think the game is good, at the same time I think it had the potential to be even better and feels like they shot themselves in the foot by trying to deliver a more engaging and immersive experience. Things don't always work out like we plan, and I applaud them for attempting something different, as it's obvious that a ton of effort and passion went into the creation of this game.
    I think that's what makes this game so frustrating and disappointing despite it being an actual good game. You just know that there's so much effort put into it, but because of a design choice some people love and some people hate, it's made the game so decisive and taken away the attention off of, and made it hard to enjoy, all the good aspects of the game.

    It's interesting that they decided to change the inputs to be more like a 2D-fighting game, because the original Japanese version used button combinations instead, which I find much easier to pull off. They also buffed the spin kick in the western version, making it so overpowered that the best way to take down enemies is to spam it. In the Japanese version, it's good for crowd control but it doesn't do anywhere near as much damage. I didn't know about the rumors of the game being toned down for the MA-13 rating, but if that's true, I hope a prototype with gorier backgrounds gets discovered some day.

    @SLX I was wondering if you could maybe make a video regarding the issue of sound on the Sega Genesis throughput it’s lifecycle. I noticed that early on games had such beautiful music and sounds but it seems (at least imo) that sound seemed to get worse over time on the Genesis. Why is that? Did that somehow stem from the follow up iterations of the console or was it the programmers or?

    • @SegaLordX
      @SegaLordX  Год назад +4

      Not a bad idea. To answer your question quickly, it was the influx of western developers who had no experience with FM synth. Early Genesis software all came from Japan. Those were mostly arcade developers who knew FM synth well. Then a deluge of US/European devs came in and used tools like GEMS to very poor results.

    • @Oysterblade84
      @Oysterblade84 Год назад

      Very true. To add insult to injury, Matt Furniss (who was one of the very few western sound artists that DID sound good on the hardware) left Krisalis in early 1995 to go and work for Psygnosis, so from that point on many UK devs like Probe who always hired him to do the audio had to start using GEMS or an identical version of GEMS and it got to the point where GEMS just took over everything. Had Matt stayed on board for another year I dare say games like ''Mortal Kombat 3, Batman Forever and Bugs Bunny Double Trouble'' would have had music by Krisalis - Matt Furniss instead of the dead-boring GEMS. The over saturation of GEMS really started sometime around 1993/1994.

    I rented this game from Blockbuster, once.
    Didn't impress me enough to buy it.
    SOR2 is my favourite Sega MegaDrive (Genesis) game so O like beat 'en ups.

    I remember renting this from Blockbuster only because my grandma did not know any better lol, it genuinely freaked me out being a 12 year old and playing it in the dark.

    Of all the classic, this is the one I never replay, hated the timer and the beatem up style, just didn't appeal to me.
