Fixing the leaks is THE MOST IMPORTANT! A friend of mine attempted to rebuild a trailer and sunk a lot of money into it. She thought the leaks were fixed, but we were in a drought at the time, so she just plowed forward. Then it rained...and leaks were everywhere! She ended up scraping the whole project. I don't want to be a downer, just want to forewarn to you to ensure the leaks are fixed before doing all of the cool interior design projects. I wonder if any leaks could be behind this upper cabinets over the dining area, for instance. Just make sure you ask the experts about sealing everything. Best of luck to both of you! I'll be excitedly following your progress! :)

Good job. Demo is hard and gross. Putting things back together is far more motivating cuz things start looking better. Just make sure you redo every seal on every seam and window. Trust that nothing is still good at this age of a trailer. Mine had a leak and I ended up putting my foot through the floor cuz it was only patched and not fully fixed by the previous owner. But I liv d that trailer. It was my home for six years and it served me well. I know you will enjoy yours once it’s done.

What you are doing has been done many times with old trailers. The roof should be caulked and coated, thats one option and another is to glue a sheet over the whole roof. There are a number of materials you can do that with. I'm from Michigan the birthplace of camper trailers. The roof you have know has a number of leaky seams that are nearly impossible to patch.

What has saved my camp trailer from leakage is: Liquid rubber RV sealant. It goes on like a paint and drives like rubber. I put it on my horse trailer, my camp trailer, and around the sky lights in my home. It works amazingly. Just a thought for you guys.

I love watching build videos. Even though you are not having fun now, you will be so proud and satisfied once it is completed. Keep it up! Unfortunately, a barebone strip-down should be expected since it is an old vehicle(?). Unfortunately, most people don't care for their things, vehicles, and general living space unless they are very meticulous, so there's a higher chance that you will find deterioration and potentially dangerous electrical hacks. If everyone took meticulous care of their things, there would probably be less waste.

Very excited for you both on this new adventure! Fun to see Nick's personality bubble over on this channel. May I suggest since it appears that you have the opportunity to create your own kitchen design you also look into the Omnia Oven (if the original oven had to be pitched, too). It's a fun way to cook in the camper (while also offering heat in the colder months). It'll be a bit of a diversion from your cast iron cooking but I bet you would love the challenge of creating great meals in it. I suspect you'll still be doing tent camping but it you appears to have lots of disbursed camping by you. Give yourself guilt free time to enjoy this wonderful way of seeing the country. Oh, yeah, now that you'll have some space, don't forget to carry a bug zapper.

Lot of the hard work behind you now. Are you going to try to emulate the original set up or make it modern and more comfortable/roomy/livable inside? Some of the older airstreams have been renovated with a Scandinavian open/streamlined look. Can’t wait to see the finished project!

  • @paulapaul525

Look into "Dicore butly tape" to help seal around windows and anywhere two pieces of metal come together.
Also, reconsider the electrical situation. When you decide to sell your camper, (and you will want to sell it to move to the next camper project. )
Having 30 Amp shore power will be a selling point. You don't have to use it, but I don't know of a solar unit that would run a coffee pot or toaster. I am not an expert on solar, but to the best of my knowledge, all you can run are lights and charge phones on it if you can't spend a great deal of money on it.

  • @billlottman7339

Super excited to watch your renovation! One thought, you might want to use the insulation foil tape where your foam board meets the wood. It will provide a vapor barrier to help protect against moisture/ condensation from creeping into the wall and causing mold/mildew.

  • @pattysmith9892

Well old campers are like old boats. Water is not their friend. It can destroy! It will fun to watch but I think you should have saved yourselves a lot of money and headaches by getting a newer camper. Plus a bathroom is nice especially in the middle of the night. Trust me you are having fun right now but you will be looking for a bigger, better camper in the future. We are on our 3rd one and dreaming of our next.

  • @donreinholz8121

Make sure the frame is solid. Probably need to run new plumbing and all new wiring. You can spray mold to kill it. Plug in power might still be a nice option for a fan or for cooking. You might be able to put a thin layer of foam board over the insulation for added comfort. You did. Lol. Cedar siding looks cool.

I know this would not be vintage but have you considered Raptor lining the outside of the trailer, they have it as a tintable version and you could do a two tone like it is now. It would definitely fill in all the little unknown holes in the aluminum that are potential water leaks. If not the whole trailer consider the roof. White would help with the heat and it is really tough stuff. good luck, I look forward to seeing the continued journey.

In 2014, we bought a 1977 Terry travel trailer. We thought we would just needed to paint, make a few changes...... We ended up taking it down to bare metal, having to replace about 95% of the wood. I even had to replace the axle. By the time we were done, the only thing original was the aluminum skin, windows and the exhaust fan that went over the stove. We didn't have any holding tanks of any type because all of the originals were broken and couldn't be repaired. We used that camper for about 5 years, and towed it about 7500 miles. In 2022, we sold it and bought a new 5th wheel so we could have self contained plumbing. When you are finished, it will be worth it. The good news is he looks like a lot better carpenter than I am.

Things to keep in mind: cabinets are what is holding the trailer together. We washed our cushions and let out in the sun to dry (cushions are expensive). Amazon makes covers we got leather (fake). The way to stop the leaks is to start on the roof (quad or lap sealant). Everything needs to be sealed. I check ours yearly at the minimum. Things shift when driving so I am always checking. Water is your enemy.

We have an old 1979 boler trailer which seems to be kinda the fiberglass version of what you have. I see so many similarities in the layout. One thing that I wish I had is a place under roof to work because I had to cover it up after every time working on it. I find that the most common place from leaks are corners and around windows. Running a dedicated ground wire for each lite is better than depending on the sheet metal or frame for the ground.
