    This piece drives the point home of Scott Joplin's genius. It's only 5 minutes, but it's a tour de force of melodies and harmonies. I'm awed by it... (but I may be a musical simpleton). You do a terrific job at it, your rendition is the most appealing to me of all I've heard, playing this piece.

  • @MsSoundguy
    @MsSoundguy 3 года назад +1

    Thank you. I like your interpretation of this tricky and thoroughly enjoyable rag. It's interesting (to me, anyway) how you vary tempos between strains and within strains. There's nothing wrong with this in concert, which is what this is, but remember that rags were written mostly as dance music. The pianists certainly did their best to one-up each other, but again that was "concert." The rags themselves were dances. A change of tempo is not problematic, but a change within a strain screws up dancers. Remember the description of Coalhouse Walker, Jr. in "Ragtime": Club owners hired him, dancers required him. A delicate balance now, but you play beautifully, and listening to other videos, you obviously get it. Thank you. I'm an old fart who played starting back in the late '60s. That means nothing re: ragtime, just that I'm an old fart with arthritis.

    Always a great pleasure to see and hear you playing. I am a great ragtime fan and I composed two rags myself, that were punched into a pianola roll by a friendly German professor who could convert midi files into pianola rolls. Unbelievably great Kristen. This is a majestic piece of music and you dealt with it accordingly. What I like about your playing is that you follow Joplin's mantra of 'not playing too fast', the scourge of ragtime. Have you ever played Jelly Roll Morton? That Oboe The last tune he wrote. He was suffering from syphilis and was depressed and manic by turns, and the mixture of bouncy melodies and melancholy passages is very moving. The final coda is almost like Joplin saying goodbye - I would have preferred it a little more gentle and sad. But superb playing, nonetheless.

    A glorious attempt! Brava ! You were able to master Elite Syncopations; and I'm eagerly awaiting the same with Magnetic Rag. You don't have those complicated transitions down quite yet, so you end up breaking stride. It is the implicit "square" beat you must drive (without ever touching it) which propels and levitates ragtime. You keep on keepin' on girl. You're doing GREAT !
