Holy smokes! I am in awe as I watch you playing that piece. As a fellow musician, old enough to be your Grandfather, I have rarely seen someone who has it as together as you do, piece after piece.
@@joemendiola7345 that's like when I said to Eric Himy who had just played some amazing and difficult fast Gershwin pieces. I said, "maybe you should play something more difficult."

As I watched her videos throughout the years, Kristen just kept getting better and better... Weird, I know... but she and others like her just serve to reconfirm my life-long love of Ragtime music. Kristen, you rock!
Kristen, I'm amazed every time I hear you play. I love how you articulate the notes, that makes a huge difference in giving the music some clear definition. And, when it comes to playing staccato in the bass, and legato in the right hand, you are the best that I've heard. Having that perfect technique really brings out the syncopation between the two parts. Well done!
STACCATO = each note being played quickly, and with little or no sustain (cut short, crispy; detached) LEGATO = played smoothly and connected (the melody flows together from note to note without any intervening silence)
Nothing makes me happier than to see a new video from you Kristen. By the way, I'm making some progress with my piano playing. I just learned The Cheers Theme song, Daydream Believer, and In The Summertime by Mungo Jerry. Thanks for the inspiration. The other 2 people that made me want to learn are Terry Miles and Brendan Kavanagh.
Kristen, its great that a young musician like yourself is interested ragtime, a wonderful music genre that is much neglected now. Growing up in the 40's and 50'd I learned the style by hearing the old timers playing in live, just the way it was in the turn of the last century. I suggest you get hold of a DVD of the movie "Ragtime" as the performances in the film are outstanding and very accurate. I think you will be surprised at how refined and lyrical the style actually was. And the tempos were much slower. I had the good fortune of playing in an authentic style ragtime band for several years during my career as a professional musician.
As much as I love ragtime and thought I had heard 'em all, this is new to me and now my favorite rag. Now I don't have to play the Entertainer every day. JUST kidding. Not kidding about loving this song, though. And well played as usual. Talk about a finger workout - whew!
I am familiar with Scott Joplin and his rags but hearing Mr. Johnson's song is a first for me as well. Good performance. I can see why it takes a bit out of the player.
@@pauld6967 I'm surprised that Dill Pickle is new to you. It's been a mainstay of Dixieland and skiffle bands for a long time. I'm glad you discovered it.

I think the pace of that song got you into the aerobic zone of piano playing. You almost need a couple of assistants. One on one side wiping the sweat out of your eyes like a surgeon's nurse, and one on the other fanning you with a towel like a prize fighter's corner man.
I subscribe to a lot of young people's videos that keep the classics alive. You are wonderfully talented and it's a pleasure to listen to you. God bless keep up the good work and thank you
Ten people gave this a thumbs down. Five played spoons, three played a musical saw, and two blew on wax paper over a comb. I love your playing, Miss Mosca.
Kristen: That is a great talent to be able to put the cords with the melody like you do. I know how to play a melody, and add the correct cord to it also, so I started playing the accordion after I got out of college. Playing a note, cord, repeatedly is easy once you get the hang of it on an accordion. I don’t know if you know how the buttons on an accordion are lay’d out, but look it up on line, and you will see how it can be easy and fun if you play by ear. Being able to take the accordion wherever you want to play is fun! I grew up in the south, so not many people have seen an accordion! I play more on my accordion now than I do on the piano, and I’ve played the piano since I was 5 yrs old. I play inside, outside, and I even joined a German Band. It’s lot’s of fun. Whatever music you make and with what instrument you use, enjoy!! You’re an excellent player!
Wow! Something magical has happened over the last 4 or 5 years. The bass is now firm and authoritative, and the right hand is brilliant. Earlier, it was . . . less so. Your obvious talent is reaching maturity. Congratulations! (And I know it took/takes a tremendous amount of hard work.) Thanks for your videos and the effort you put into them.
all I can say is JOY! you do great - make us all jealous and happy at the same time - don't get discouraged. I hope you can keep it up and make others happy.
Excellent job. This reminds me of the albums my mother had of Rag Time Jazz. She had ever single Del Wood. You should see if you can find any of her albums and give them a listen. That woman's fingers were like lightening.
heard this for the first time on a video of tom brier's birthday party, he could only play with the right hand, sad, hope he gets better. Great Video btw!!
Another great tune, Kristen! If nothing else, this pandemic has broadened my music experiences, and you are one of the contributors to it! Thank you for posting these, and I hope see more from you!
Along with Florian Krueger who is I think a little bit better in his performance this is one of the very best performances of the dill pickles rag and I have listened to virtually every one of them that is on RUclips. Congratulations for an excellent performance
Kristen has gotten me into ragtime, lately, and I'm currently trying (desperately) to learn my first Scott Joplin piece (Edit: actually my first true ragtime piece), the Peacherine Rag. I'm not doing too well. Has anyone got any suggestions? (other than "keep practicing your trouble spots")? Great video, as always! -Laura C. This comment will disappear in 72 hours, due to this being a family account.
Don't be in a rush to try and play anything quickly. Slow and steady and do it one section at a time. It'll sound better played slowly and consistently than faster with errors and changes in speed. A lot of ragtime on YT is played far too fast (not including this video just to be clear)
What has worked for me is to go real slow, learn one hand at a time while listening to the other hand's part in my head. I eventually put both parts together. Take frequent breaks so you don't burn out.
@tonysye Many decades ago, I used to play recordings of Mozart Piano Concertos or Bill Evans Trio recordings at low volumes on the record player as I went to sleep. I think it made it much easier to play both styles of music. Probably even helped as I was going through music college. I don't know if it would be considered subliminal training, but it helped. Maybe listening to recordings of great ragtime players as you go to sleep would make it all easier... Something to try...
Certainly practice each hand separately, but don’t spend ages going over each hand by itself until it’s perfect. Put it together early - SLOWLY. Literally as slow as you need to go for it to be semi-fluent, if that speed is 50 BPM then that’s the speed you should start. If it’s slower than that, that’s fine too.
Kristen, you are wonderfully talented and I love listening to ragtime tunes. I'm rock& roll, blues-oriented in most of my tastes, but ragtime kicks it and you do it superbly!
