State Farm denies another homeowner’s claim for water damage

- More homeowners are coming forward saying State Farm is denying their water leak damage claims. CBS 8 is Working for You to find out if this is a pattern by the insurance company.
Mark Matthews has lived in his Chula Vista home for 25 years. And, he says, he’s been a customer of State Farm for more than 30 years, without ever filing a claim.
Matthews said a hot water pipe above his kitchen started leaking on April 21, and caused what he estimated to be $20,000 in damage, flooding out his dining room. “One little pipe that was just drip, drip, drip, drip, drip,” said Matthews.

State Farm not being a very good neighbor...😂
😂😂😂
State Farm;
"Bro, lemme hold a dollar."
@dougfisher1813 Ok big man here's a dolla.
😂😂😂😂
It's like car insurance. You don't understand the coverage until you have an accident.
So easy to read the policy
even when you read the policy, the company lies and denies the claim. been there and done that, im disabled and had my disability insurance denied over spinal stenosis.
@george It is clear that you did not pay attention to the video. The adjuster claimed it was an outgoing leak, while the plumber's report indicated it was a sudden burst. The question now arises: how did the adjuster come to the conclusion that it was an outgoing leak? Considering the adjuster's background and history of approval versus denial, is the adjuster sufficiently educated to make that determination?
@@f.j.c4444 mold doesn’t happen over night.
Yes, you are mold does not grow. Overnight but There are multiple reasons why mold can grow in a house even if there isn't a leak. So the question then becomes: how do professionals determine what is causing it?
The insurance adjuster doesn't work in the intrest of the policy holder, they work for the insurance companies
thats why you hire your own adjuster
I wouldnt want to be on camera saying it went drip drip.
Welcome to the you have coverage without coverage, and you pay for nothing. All insurance companies.
You are right these ins companies are changing so much on there policy. My deductable is now 6,700 simply l had a claim. They say you have to have ins. But when you use it you get penalize .
If the leaks been there for a while, they would be wider stains, and a bigger mess
So they AREN’T like a good neighbor??? Good to know.
Nope. We got rear ended by a State Farm driver. They tried to not cover rental car etc. I had to threaten to get a lawyer before they got reasonable
@@BusArch42link? Or it didn’t happen
The problem also with a company like this is, they spend untold millions on commercials and paying stars to advertise, then turn around and deny claims which equals to a pittance of their advertising budget!!!
My friend had State Farm, they were away on vacation when there hot water heater burst and flooded entire house. They were terrible to them, trying to deny their coverage. 6 months after the leak 4 men in suits arrived to the house and demanded to see hot water heater. My friend said its at the dump. They tried to say hot water heater was too old, my friend responded with “it wasn’t too old when you gave us coverage!” Jerks
Link? Or it didn’t happen
Policy covers sudden, direct and accidental, not a slow continuous leak.
Yes just about every INS only covers sudden leaks
State farm is correct to deny.this is just normal maintenance.
@@info781 Agree. A maintenance issue, not covered by HO policy. As an adjuster for 51 years I never enjoyed telling people their claim was not covered.
If the water heater suddenly exploded, then there would be coverage. Otherwise State Farm is in the right.
with the slow leak, there can be a lot of claims made false or not. it can be easity fabricated which the insurance cost will go up even more for petty claims
If the pipes are doing that that’s wear & tear. & in your policy it clearly states it’s not covered
A lot of new construction homes now have PVC plastic hot and cold water lines hooked up to metal angle valves. Cheap Cheap Cheap. All to save the builder money. I live in an older home with solid copper hot and cold supply lines hooked up into the angle valves. The problem with cheap plastic supply lines for the hot and cold water supply is it does not last as long as the old copper pipes. Plastic pipes can burst, and leak or leak slowly over time. When you have to replace it, the job gets rather large. You have to rip out the drywall if the pipe is in the wall, or open the concrete slab in your home if the pipe is under the slab. To fix you have to do drywall, texture, and paint for the walls. If the pipe is under the concrete slab the flooring has to be removed or ripped out, and replaced if damaged. This is where the cost can get rather expensive. My older home also has a crawl space under it, and the copper supply lines for the hot and cold water are fully accessible under there. Nothing is buried.
Thanks dad, for teaching me how to do things myself. For teaching me how to be a good steward of my home, property and automobiles. How to manage my finances and cook. So many helpless mofos.
Bruh that is so wrong calling them ( mofos ) it is true that there are a lot of people who refused to learn or like in my case didn’t have a dad . I had to learn everything by myself and believe me it took a lot of trial and error , but every time I saw someone repairing something I watched closely and took notes . Some of the tradesman didn’t like it tho - but others were extremely helpful and even explained it as they did it. It took me years but I learned a ton of lessons and knowledge- enough to remodel 3 repo homes over the years and make a handsome profit…
And then they make you pay added premium for 2 years for asking if you have a claim!
Yup. Happened to me too!
He just proved state farm correct by what he said in the video. He said he heard a leak. Meaning maintenance issue. Not storm or accidental. He really doesn't understand the difference
Dude you should re watch and re listen....dude doesn't say what ever u think..go to :50 in video...listen carefully turn your ear mic on 10..
I noticed they didn't show inside those wall/ceiling cut outs. Unfortunately if there was rot inside and he's describing it as "drip drip drip" he's going to hurt his case. The big burst may have been what flooded the room, but if it was leaking inside the wall for weeks or more, that's probably why they denied it. There are some endorsements now which do provide coverage rot and hidden leakage damage.
He didn't say they had heard drip, drip, drip, but rather it was determined (by the adjuster) that it was one little pipe (drip, drip, drip). He's citing the adjuster's evaluation not his.
so what your're supposed to magicially figure out something behind the wall you can't see till it really does damage you then can?
@@davidcarp5935 Unfortunately most homeowners insurance policies are that way. If there is evidence that it was leaking for a while,, whether visible or concealed, they won't cover the damage. It's considered "constant and repeated seepage"
If the carpet was soaked then why was it still in the house? Water logged carpet can cause mold, and mold can make you sick. When my father had a sudden water leak, State Farm sent out a restoration management company to lift the carpet treat it, and dry it out. They used commercial fans, and dehumidifiers, and paid the claim.
Maintain your homes!! Insurance companies do not cover wear&tear like any warranty. Covered incidents are SUDDEN & ACCIDENTAL
That is what the plumber told him. A sudden burst.
Haha dude explained it himself as drip drip drip. Does that sound like a continuous leak or a sudden burst? Can y'all find legitimate claims insurance companies are acting in bad faith? This one ain't it.
So wait till it bursts
Read your homeowners policy and see what’s covered. Your policy will tell you exactly what’s covered and what is not. And if you are unable to fully understand contact your agents office for understanding.
We need to put this on a shirt!! ❤
I live in Arkansas and had a leak in the slab that was located in my living room. State Farm denied payment because it wasn't caused from the pipes freezing. I also called them out to inspect my roof after three local roofing companies told me I have extensive damage which they marked and provided pictures of the damage. The State Farm adjuster swears there's no hail damage.
A different insurance company required copy of utility bills to prove it wasn't caused by a pipe freezing... which wouldn't have been covered.
I started watching the weather channel some 7 months ago. Arkansas gets a lot of storms.
If you can show the last time your roof was replaced and how many years should have been left then you can go after them
This is bullsh!t
Na man I’m with State Farm on this one. You can’t use insurance for every maintenance occurrence on a house. Maintenance is part of home ownership. Like they said if pipe burst out of no where and it caused damage yeah I’m with it. But that drip drip drip. Naa that’s something he let it go.
State farm is the worst insurance company to deal with in natural disaster areas of tornado and hurricane damage.
They deny claims to homeowners for no reason
They don,t pay for hurricanes nor tornadoes its fema that does NO INSURANCE PAY.S
Read your policies. It is a contract and you acknowledge that contract every time you pay premium. Not saying it should or should not be covered, but we are only hearing one side of story. Was there rot and mold in walls? Was there clear evidence of continuous seepage. By the way, most if not all insurance policies have this language.
No w&t or deterioration. Its excluded
Deniseb- it sounds like you work for them. Would you be talking like that if that happened to you?
@@annadiaz2717 I did work for an insurance company and having to deny a claim is the worst part of the job. If you read what I wrote, I didn't say whether it was covered or not. Not sure how you can be offended by anything I wrote, so completely unsure what you mean by 'talking like that'? Jeesh...
@@annadiaz2717Most people don’t even read their policies and then when things like this happens then it’s bad insurance companies smh 🤦🏾♂️ Most if you who do have homeowners policies don’t ask questions to your agents either. You just ASSUME they got you covered smh you get them to read it until YOU understand it.
States farm denied our claim after we sustain damage from a microburst just last year that's caused us to have a leaky roof that's damaging ceilings and floors
We're in Oceanside and had a similar recent denial by State Farm. Every expert we spoke to said it should be covered, but State Farm denied coverage.
Appeal
I work for a plumbing company here in San Diego and State Farm has been one of the worst. They have no problem dismissing a professional plumber assessment. Apparently the adjusters no more than the professional trades person. Yet they are very efficient at taking your money.
State farm went to crap a year ago. Something changed. I never had issues with claims in past. The few I had. I had a windshield replacement 2 years ago. Was simple as always. Last year I had a replacement and they almost harassed me. I had to jump through hoops and deal with a perk 3rd party company lynk. They made it worse. Then the agents said they took all the power from them. I am ready to find another company. I been hearing more and more about how they been complicated about claims. They made me feel guilty for wanting my windshield replaced.
I'm a water damage contractor on State Farm's vendor program. One time we did s job for someone who filled up their sink to do dishes then forgot about it. That's a covered loss. Flooded the whole house
If there is mild, mildew, wet or dry rot its long term my friends. The department of insurance regulates what the policy language reads. People, read your policy and stop blaming the messenger ❤
This!! Like literally do you read anything before you sign it or just sign things? 😂 I’ve been an adjuster for a while now. I can’t tell you how many people don’t read SECTION II LOSSES NOT COVERED smh 🤦🏾♂️
who cares if its long or short term, its damage, especially if you can't see it
@@davidcarp5935 your opinion is not relevant. It is what the contract reads my friend 😞
They denied water damage to our condo from delays in roof approval repairs. Now over a year later our siding isn't on as their approved claim amount suddenly became unapproved....on adjustor #7!!! Now its been over a year since the hail storm.
Stalemate and in the meantime our property sits unprotected with holes in the siding. SF is NOT a good neighbor and definitely NOT there. Can't get a reply back!
I had SF 45 years, & not ONE claim. Then I had a roof leak, and they denied the claim. They said lack of maintenance on our tile roof that had been inspected 1 year prior & certified for 5 years. If there's a class action lawsuit please add me
State Farm NOT there…
I got the same from Nationwide a few years ago. They said it was “preventable with regular home maintenance”. Shortly after they canceled my policy. Canceled after over 50 years of never missing or being late on a payment.
Having the same problem now. Over 40 years with Nationwide.
“Nationwide is on your side” 🤨. Sorry to hear, most of these insurance companies with cheesy commercials suck!
20 grand? thats like 2 grand in repairs and maybe a few grand in loss in personal property. FFS
Exactly. That’s not 20k in damage
There's a lot more you aren't factoring in. It's a process just to remediate the water damage which is going to involve tearing up floor, drywall possibility cabinets which could mean the entire countertop needs to come off and may need to be replaced if it comes off in pieces. Better hope it's not an older home that requires expensive espestice handling.
Then putting everything back together is even more expensive with all the various skillsets that come into play.
So yeah, I wouldn't doubt that 20k is the number.
It’s in California
We had a slab leak in 2018 that cause significant water damage to our powder room and kitchen and were denied because they said they didn’t cover any pipes that are under the floors. It cost us thousands to repipe, and rebuild our kitchen and powder room due to the water damage.
Can we get a lawyer I have mold in my basement they are no good
@@maggyrivera9638Does your policy cover mold and mildew?
A bit off topic, but would you buy a house that has a crawl space under it instead of being on a slab foundation next time around ?
@@maggyrivera9638, mold is caused by dampness ,
Improper venting !
Thats Maggie's Mistake !
It's not the insurance companies fault that YOU have Improper Venting
They always try to say that. State Farm told me the same thing until a plumber had to come in and prove it was not an ongoing issue
I have 3 cases againt them 3 times they have denied me
I remember a friend his house caught fire state farm low balled him for years and gave in to there pay out it was a nightmare he told me!
We discovered a slow leak in January that was coming from our dishwasher that we didn't discover until we noticed our kitchen floor was popping up.
Our state farm insurance also wouldn't cover it, so we spent thousands out of pocket to fix the water damage and then essentially had to do a half remodel on the kitchen to put it back together costing several thousand more which took 3.5 months, so we literally just got our kitchen back to working order last week.
I experienced the same situation, then State Farm dropped my home insurance.
Insurance companies don't have great insurance but have great lawyers.
I am currently going through the exact same situation with a water leak and 20k in repairs.
Homeowners insurance is absolute trash. If you own your home cash put this money in emergency savings
State Farrm isn’t there ,especially when you need them
I had a water damage claim filed with Nationwide, and they denied it, on the same basis. What the insurance companies don't realize is if they continue, there will be no reason for people to continue to pay for insurance. They'll put themselves out of business.
If the you scam the insurance company it's fraud, and when the insurance com0any scams you it's just business
My same exact issue. I think at this point we all need to file complaints if haven't done so. I had a leak from the refrigerator running through the walls. Took an adjuster an entire week to come out to tell me they wasn't fixing it and tell me it was a on going issue when it wasn't even a issue I could have actually seen through the walls to even know. The adjuster took picture after the fact when mold and mildew was present when after a week that's expected.
They have no problem taking your money. When it’s time to pay up, they’ll say NO. 😡
Well, that's an insurance company I'll never use.
They know everybody they denied me too and said I had a constant water leak as shown on the bill and the water company. I had no water leak. They still denied me insurance company ever.
Why not Sue the poor guy that put the pipes in 😢 I'd have the all the plumbing in the house checked .
Of course they won’t pay. Insurances rarely pay for a claim.
we had state farm on a home, dishwasher leaked slowly in back, water went into drywall behind cabinets, travelled tens of feet, finally mold popped out. State farm denied claim saying slow leaks are uncovered had to pay out of pocket to demolish half kitchen, professionally mold remediate, & rebuild. It cost a car. In hindsight we should of got the cheapest insurance instead.
Slow leaks aren’t covered under most homeowners policies idiot. Read your policy next time.
No one covers maintainance nor do they cover mold.
Sad but true -
Just finished going through the same thing, thousands of dollars, we had no idea there was a slow leak until the damage was done.
Now with the new dishwasher, not only did we get one with a built-in water tray, we also added another tray under the feet plus a moisture detector. $30 is well worth it for peace of mind and will save thousands if we ever have a leak again.
Few people properly maintain their homes no matter the income level - I’m surprised the insurance companies don’t demand a yearly inspection as we have with automobiles
That is per policy and outlined as such, unless an endorsement is added. See a lot of policy holders not knowing what their policy actually states.
State Farm denied my water damage also!!
Remember what they did to those people in New Orleans after Katrina?
Can you tell me what they did ?
@@misspuppa They either under paid (by a lot) or in some cases they didn't pay at all.
We need more investigation stories like this. I live in Florida and Snake farm is doing the same thing here.
state farm has been considered the biggest con artist by some in the insurance field
My father-in-law has had the same USAA homeowners insurance for 22 years and they denied him a re-piping claim insurance companies these days don’t have to pay out because they are not held to any standards. Not only that, but after he notified them that he needed a re-piping they proceeded to drop him from the insurance then once he told them he was having a company come in and re-pipe they said that they will keep him on the insurance.
Hidden leakage over time is an optional coverage. Shame on the agent for not selling the coverage.
On the other hand, if the agent suggested the coverage and the customer rejected it, the customer can only blame themselves in this situation.
Need to get a licensed public adjuster. The adjuster works for the customer then argues the claim to the insurance company. The public adjuster gets a percentage of the claim, it used to be around 5% maybe 10%. But they will work to get you enough money to get your house fixed and get their commission. I had to use an adjuster once. Roof damage from a storm, Citizens is all we have here in Florida. Their adjuster said "yes sir we will pay to have this section of the roof (flat roof) replaced. Estimate was about $3500. I get a check in the mail for $300. Public adjuster got me $4000 of which they took their %. I ended up with enough to properly fix the roof.
He didn't notice a large leak for 25 years ?
State farm canceled my car insurance and did not even notify me. They sd I had filed to many claims. I had filed two claims one bc of a deer I swerved to miss the deer and she told me I should of hit it and filed as an at fault accident. I asked why did I have insurance if I wasn't allowed to use it when I needed to and she told me that if you file more than one claim then you're bound to do it over and over and over I want 21 days without insurance now I have to pay an SR-22 amount. They were so rude and ugly about it State farm used to be shut down
Oh no, I just filed a claim with State Farm last week for a leaky roof, and now this video is in my feed. Who's spying on me?
There is no sense in having insurance if they won't payout!!!!!!
In Washington state, state farm did this same thing .we had a pipe that cracked underneath the house..state farm denied the claim after 2 different plumber company said what had happened.state farm used the way the water company bills people every other month where i live..and said it was a gradual leak..since the leak was under the house state farm also used that as a denial...i have to pay out of pocket to get fixed so i can water my lawn..super mad..
I went on vacation and came back to a a flood from a slow leak. What's different?
Yes Allstate has the same policy
Number 1 rule for insurance adjuster. Denied
Instead of paying crazy insurance rates and getting little back create a rainy day fund.
They don’t want to pay San Diego costs to repair a house.
I had a similar situation last fall in the living room downstairs. A pipe burst in the ceiling. Intact Insurance was fantastic. Glad I didn't go with State Farm.
Seems like SF isn't making enough money to keep their investors satisfied..... Multibillion-dollar corporation can't fix this guys drywall and carpeting? Shameful.
Just make sure any leak is "sudden"
There is hidden water damage coverage. Not expensive, a few hundred a year but you need to purchase as additional coverage.
Why should insurance cover neglect exactly?
How did you go from drip.. drip.. to a soaked carpet in the next room? $20,000 for drywall replacement and carpet?
My parents had sf for over 60 years, house and 2 cars. Never late and never had a claim. Bad windstorm came, ripped a bunch of shingles off..called them, said 9000 damage. Their termi ation letter came before the check came
READ YOUR POLICY!
Filed a claim 2 months ago. They've been slow walking the whole time. Insurance companies are out of hand ...
So glad my pop taught me to fix anything and everything!! Too many crooks and frauds out there!
Including insurance companies
I had a washing machine leak and state farm wrote me a for the damage and abatement team. No beef here.
Was that Poly B piping that failed? I couldn't even find an insurer for my house with it, so I had it all changed out to Pex
They charge you a ton of money you do not have and then find a way not to cover any problems
Maybe they’re trying to recoup the money they paid to all those big name athletes in their commercials.
Did Jake from State Farm get drafted?
This is an old trick, flood your house when you want out with a huge check
What a shock, Insurance companies, banks, and landlords have destroyed this country.
Sue these greedy insurance companies!!!
Do they offer insurance that covers continuous water leaks?
We are require to have ins but when we use it we get penilize .not fair
State Farm doesn't pay. Change companies now!
They still owe for the one time occurrence. Think about this.
These homeowners are neglecting their property or damaging them during renovations and they want us all to pay their bill. Homeowners insurance is for when your house is destroyed not to be bled dry by neglect.
State Farm denied our hail claim when they told us to file claim for hail . Denied claim same story here we are going to another instance company .
I know someone who got a new roof where there was supposed hail damage but you couldn't see any visible damage! They had a newer roof too, and my friend with an old roof that had visible hail damage they refused to pay - go figure!
Again what’s the point of insurance
It looked like it was a pro press fitting that failed. Hmm.
All insurance carriers are NOT for the benefit of the homeowners. They are for profit investment firms FOR THE OWNERS OF THE INSURANCE COMPANY. They are denying claims and even when they cover the loss, they straight up deny factual and supported contractor charges which leaves the homeowner on the hook for thousands of dollar.
State Farm need a taste class action lawsuit. Only then may they change their cooked ways.
Wow! Glad I didn’t switch to them!!!
