I visited the Tunnel 20 years ago. To the right there is a trail that leads to the Twin Cascades. The Cascade on the left when I visited had a railroad tie build up in the shape of a box that was at least ten feet tall. It was to hold water which was delivered to a water tower for the steam locomotives. I was able to stand on top of the structure because it had filled with sediment from the cascade over the course of many years and heavy rain falls. The cascade on the right is well over 100 ft.
I always love visiting that tunnel in the Spring, Summer, and Fall Winter can be tricky I've been lucky to see freight trains pass through there Florida MA the East Portal is always easy to get too never visited the West Portal though
The Hoosac tunnel was double track and operated by steam locos for years. Electric locos were used to drag steam trains through the tunnel until dieselization. The second track was removed and the other track moved to the center to accommodate double stack container cars; as can be seen @4:38 the roof was notched for the top container. The shaft at the center was dug to give 4 digging faces for the tunnel to be bored and later used for ventilation. The tunnel was a State of Massachusetts project.
@@blowingleaves-rb9fw There are at least two books on the history of the tunnel. I have seen a video of the engineer's view of a trip through the tunnel and a video of trains on the bridge end using electric locos.
Thanks for taking us along. You find the coolest places. Those photos at the end were just beautiful. I'd buy them and hang them as art in my home. Wishing you and yours an awesome 2020.
Hey! I know that tunnel and have walked in it during the summer. If you go in far enough you can look up and see the sky (must be the fan).It is nice and cool in the summer.
Thanks for another adventure. Another where water flows, of course. I like how you use some caution and respect for property. You sure get around and locate the cool places.
Is it just me or when the second Post 10 looked over into that trench and discovered a culvert and said, "I can't seem to find a way down there" you can hear his walking pace go double time as he crunches his way through the snow in hopes to find one! 3:01
Happy New Year, keep on posting about these interesting places. I like very much your safe approach, places like this can have hidden risky spots, so better be careful.
The authority will constantly check the track and brickwork in case any rocks/tress block the track as it it constantly used nice vlog loved the snow and scenery 😀👍❄️
Wow that is pretty cool I'd like to see trains go through there and at least the trains still use it I am wondering through the week and weekend how many trains go through there daily
Me: "hmmm, youtube is so boring at the moment, i wonder if that drain guy has uploaded any videos today!" Drain guy: Yes i have uploaded a video 10 minutes ago about a train tunnel This is awesome my dude!
I know this video's been up for awhile but I was searching for videos regarding the cave in back in Feb 2020. I find it ironic that sometimes you talk about deterioration to culverts and here you were at this tunnel not long (a little over a month) before it had a cave in.
My little brother and I love watching your videos so much. Keep doing what you do for the world because every drain and culvert makes a difference! Thank you for showing the world that every act of kindness to the environment really helps.
Fantastic pictures of the iced up trees. Looks magical.
Those last places you filmed were beautiful x
Thanks for sharing. Happy New Year!!!
Very cool video sir. Keep up the great work and stay safe!

Post 10 thanks for another great adventure
You are sooo AWESOME
I have been in Massachusetts in 2009, it would have been awesome if i had you as a tour guide.
I was born and raised in Massachusetts. And now live in my home town.🙂

Thanks for giving the history. I’ve been in that tunnel with my brother who lives in the area.

Whenever you say "how about *we* go see... " I always feel like I'm right there with you. Haha.
I wish I was!!
Wow, you had a couple thousand subscribers a few months ago when I subscribed, now you have 100k!

You always have cool railroad and culvert videos. Nice job post 10.
That was a great view on the mountain sides. I would love to live in the mountains. Great video too!
Here in north germany winter is only rain, thx for the "snowy" impressions from ur country :)

That tunnel is musty all the time. I visited in June 2021 and it stunk then. I think it's the heavy moisture.
Beautiful area love the mountains and the wilderness.
I agree. The scenery, particularly at 8:41 and 8:44 are breathtaking. I'm so glad Post 10 shared that with us.
You have so many cool places near you. I thought that I was lucky to live by the beach but it's not really very interesting.
Wow that is pretty cool I'd like to see trains go through there and at least the trains still use it I am wondering through the week and weekend how many trains go through there daily
I live not even a mile away from that bridge
taco cheeeze
My brother lives close by.
After watching this video..I sure miss the snow
That crunch of the snow underfoot really makes me wish it would snow here in the South of the UK 🌨️😊❄️
I’m glad you didn’t go into the railroad tunnel what with the exhaust. That looked like a beautiful culvert. Thank you post 10. 💚💚
Imagine if post 10 had his hands on Go PRO Drone technology!
Beautiful area!!

You could call your channel "trains and drains"! Cool stuff post10.

Train and drain video!
Great that you decided to play it safe. It is good to hear that you are not always alone. Have you ever run into some crazy wild animals?
Piri Gonzalez
Like humans? The scariest animals of all.

At what time did you go. So beautiful area, I take pictures of train tracks?
January 1st
Is that tunnel 5 miles long?
I bet that water is COLD!
Dude! At 4:59 you walked right past a clogged drain. Come on, clean that out!!
nice footage
From the thumbnail I thought it was a new metro 2033 trailer.
