My brother recorded this video passing through Cumberland Gap train tunnel while he was working for Norfolk Southern. You can hear the train hit the wall. This tunnel is very dangerous as it is old and prone to rock falls. If the train is too slow it will get overtaken by the smoke and you will suffocate, too fast and the train will derail and you are trapped inside and could possibly die from the heat and smoke. It really is a scary tunnel. Please Subscribe, it really means a lot.
    Brief History:
This is the last tunnel on the line coming out of Knoxville. The Knoxville Cumberland Gap Louisville railroad company blasted out this tunnel in 1888-1889, with a grade going up to the more or less center of the tunnel on both sides, so the cross-section of the mountain would reveal a tunnel that looks like an inverted “V”. Smoke had a tendency to collect at the top and make breathing difficult for crews and passengers. Then, to add to the woes, the tunnel collapsed on July 4, 1894, and again in 1896. Engineers didn’t like to go into the tunnel, so they’d push a string into the tunnel and have another locomotive pull it out from the other portal. Passengers had to take a wagon ride through the gap. This wasn’t a good situation. When L&N gained control of the tunnel (KCGL had gone bust in 1892), they did a complete refurb ending in 1897, which is the date on this portal (this is mostly from “History of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad” by Maury Klein). It’s also the date that “Dracula” by Bram Stoker, was published. When the tunnel was begun, the Buffalo Soldiers were active in the West, just 7 years after the gunfight at OK Corral.

Back in about September of 1996 my brother Warren, along with our friend Zeb Huntleigh and I had been hiking the Gap and started through this tunnel, making our way through about 3/4 and heard the train coming through the other end. Needless to say we were scared shitless and started picking up the pace real quick like. Warren and I had just reached the opening end and shot out like double time, having just made it to safety on the side of the tracks and looked back to see Zeb clinging to the front of the big engine hanging on for life. Tossing his backpack and jumping off the slow mover unhurt and very relieved to be ok, we couldn't help but just sit down and laugh the rest of the afternoon. Very damned scary I tell you.

It's not a cave - it is man-made. In the unlined sections you can see the "cupping" every few feet which was formed by successive dynamite blasts. You see the same thing in mine tunnels from the old days. The tunnel is so small because they chose to do the minimum amount of blasting/mucking necessary. They just wanted something barely big enough to get a train through. This was long before safety became a big concern in industry.

When the rock is good, it doesn't need a lining. Where it was fractured the original architects would have used brick to support the tunnel. I'm guessing the metal structures are retro-fits where either the rock or brick has weakened, and making a new tunnel to modern dimensions was deemed too expensive.

Reg mason232 I was thinking the same thing, while watching the video.
Growing up, I always dreamed of working on a train, going across country. Or drive a semi. I ended up driving a semi. From that seat, I got to see a lot, of what these guys would see. Some of the rail lines through the Rocky's, and Cascades. Were simply breathtaking. Running on a narrow strip of track, on the side of a mountain. Then what looked like tunnels, that would rival this one.
All this, made me glad I drove a truck instead. Not that that, didn't have it's butt puckering moments.

I’ve worked for Csx for 15 years. Imo I think the train did hit the wall, it sounded like.
I ran a dyna cat for years for the railroad, I’ve also ran mark 4s and 6700s
I’ve had to line and tamp the track thru many tunnels all over the country. CC RAILROAD, NEW river, EK sub, big sandy sub, CV sub all over the place !
And many times I would be called in to just line only thru the tunnel.
And I would have to get out and measure the the distance from each rail to the wall ! And right now what that number was on the wall or the rail
I can’t remember what the minimums have to be ? 65 inches ? I’d have to look back at an fra book.
There was a tunnel at the ock 105.5 on the cc railroad, right there in Richmond Ky, that train cars would scrap on the tunnel wall, and I would have to go in there and line the track over.
I would get a little anxious doing it.
I never cared to be working inside any tunnel but I didn’t have a choice. I would just turn some music on and run my machine.
I am off atm on sick leave. Been gone a little over a year. I do miss it at times

Sounds like a hit at 3:39.
Tunnel has a slow order for sure.
For those who don't know, track is always changing. Freshly tamped track is smooth as glass, in a tunnel the track bed moves sometimes because water flow or heavy trains, or both. You may clear one day and not the next. Maybe there's a low spot that appears and the train sways into the side of the tunnel.

I work on trains, around them, in them. Solenoids and valves don't sound like a sledge hammer unless they just broke.
It it really that hard for you to think that there may be some possibility that it hit?

    • @mca0824
      @mca0824  6 лет назад +29

Again, the train hits the walls almost every time the train passes through the tunnel. Ground conditions, load distribution, etc.. cause the train to lean slightly to one side or the other. This causes the train to impact the wall. Do you just go around calling people a liar for fun, or are you just another troll ?

You can walk out from the head end if it derailed. Having been involved in an alleged smoke inhalation case I know from the engineering studies we had done by the engineering firm who did the Chunnel that the smoke flows upward and back as the train moves. The smoke flows backwards as the train pushes air to the rear.

My dad and papaw were train engineers mostly working out of the Decoursey yards in Latonia, KY, Queensgate in Cincinnati and whatever they are named in the Corbin, KY area. They have been on some super high trestles, which freaks me out, and some creepy tunnels. I bet they have been thru this tunnel. Papaw is no longer with us but I'm about to call my dad to ask if he's been in this one. Thank you for sharing this video. I'm excited to talk to him about it!
Update: My dad didn't usually run that line but did once and went thru that tunnel. He wasn't the engineer which is standard because they would leave that job to someone familiar with it. One interesting thing he said is in 1 line tunnels when running the train fast the air displacement pushes air out the other end and you can see the dirts and leaves being blown. Pretty cool and something I never thought of. A tunnel like this is unique since most have at least enough room for a service truck to enter to make repairs to a train if need be.

Being a railroad, tunnel technology, geology (little bit) fan, I notice the tunnel goes through soft and hard sections of the mountain: some finished without cement / concrete while others had to be steel-beam reinforced. Also noticed the rail bed is of slab concrete. So some improvements have apparently been done.
It is a normal design for tunnels to have slight inclines toward the center so that water naturally drains out to both ends. But it is not good to have very tight clearance to have "now-oversized" trains to go through. It's best to rebore the tunnel with NATM method.

I don't know why this video has so many thumbs down. It's very interesting as is the written info. Maybe if the uploader hadn't put "hits wall" in the title there wouldn't be the thumbs down tally. The train doesn't hit the wall but does brush the tunnel roof a few time (eg., 02:50). But it must be "scary" to go through this super tight squeeze. Good video.

this is up my way. there a a grade to it as well. I used to go down to the tunnel every Thursday about 730 or so to watch the train come by. I've been in the tunnel too, but no more than 10 feet.

You never think that something that old would still be in use today; barely a hand width between the sides of the locomotive and the wall - just hope to hell that the rails remain true and level through a tunnel that seems to go on for an eternity. Fascinating video!

Could you imagine being in the middle of that tunnel and hearing a train coming? There would be no room to step away from the train.

The tunnel looks like it was built sometime in the 1850s - 1880s. With steam locomotives going through this, the smoke would have been toxic and deadly. It was scary enough riding on a diesel-electric engine, but in the old days... OH HELL NO!

  • @plateshutoverlock
    @plateshutoverlock 4 года назад +2

The engines have doors that go out to a catwalk surrounding the locomotive, so you will be able to escape down the tracks.
I can't even imagine a train being able to fast enough through this tunnel to cause more than a minor derailment.
I would not want to put this to the test as this is a very long and narrow tunnel, and the smoke+and fire have no where to go except twards the ends. Even minor derailments can sometimes lead to fires.
