  • This installment of "52 Masters" features my long-time friend, Sensei Darryl Vidal, who is a Master of Chinese Kenpo and whom fans will recognize from the original "Karate Kid" movie. Here he teaches me a kata, self-defense, Filipino kali, and do some sparring. After training, Sensei Vidal shares some Karate Kid stories and we talk in depth about martial arts. Enjoy!

Great stuff. You picked up the kata so effortlessly. I remember Darryl well from Karate Kid - he was so impressive in the fight scenes.

Hello Sensei Ford, I was once a Martial Artist for 4 Years I was part Of The Kickstart Kids Program in Junior High founded By Chuck Norris in Houston Texas and I studied 3 styles of Martial Arts Tae Kwon Do, Tang Soo Doo, and Chun Kuk Do and I was part of the Houston City Wide Demo Team an Elite Club Where I had the Honor Perform in front Of Chuck Norris, But Sadly I didn’t get to reach my Black Belt due to a Hit N Run Accident that I Suffered in High School and afterwards I struggled Financially during that period of time which I was forced to stopped my training. After I Binged Watched Cobra Kai The Nostalgia bring me back my glory days as a Martial Arts 🥋. Your My Favorite Martial Artist and After Watching your vídeos it really helped me a lot to bring back old glory days and I hope I see you in any future Seasons of Cobra Kai and Also Cobra 🐍 Kai Never Dies-Jonah

Hello, Jonah. I really love your comment. Thank you so much for sharing your story with me. It’s unfortunate that you had to stop your training but I totally get why you had to. Is there a way that you could start up again even if at first it's online or through videos? I hope you can find a way. Martial arts changed my life and it sounds like it did for you as well. I appreciate you watching some of my videos here. Your support means a lot so thank you. I look forward to meeting you someday. Until then, stay strong and remember.... Cobra Kai never dies! Mr. Ford, I just wanted to say how much I thoroughly enjoyed this video. I grew up knowing you as "Dennis" from Karate Kid 3 but you have such a knowledgeable and respected presence in the martial arts, and this 52 Masters journey is a wonderful contribution. I also have great admiration for Mr. Vidal and this interview was one of the best I have seen. Your questions and topics really brought it to a personal and real level, beyond the fandom attention He and Karate Kid typically get. Thank you for your work and dedication to the martial arts and I hope that one day I have the privilege to salute you in person. Thank you.

This Episode holds up to the high standards we have come to expect from "52 Masters". It truly has something for everyone. As a Public School Teacher (ret.), Black Belt and a Teacher of Non-violent Physical Protection Techniques for public school teachers to use, this Episode has touched every fiber of my professional and personal being. A lover of The Karate Kid movies, I heard stories I had never heard before! April and Darryl Vidal's pre-marriage date story had me laughing out loud! Personal, I found inter-peace when I practiced my hyungs/katas by myself. With all the controversy around the practicality of doing hyungs/katas, it was refreshing to hear both these Masters give their opinions on the topic.
If you are a fan of The KK movies, a martial artist, a teacher (and everyone alive is teaching by example) or a just a living human being there is something that you will be able to walk away with from just watching this one Episode of 52 Masters! 🥋🙇‍♂️

What a fantastic episode, William! I really enjoyed the training portion and Daryl's stories. I have to say, back when I first saw "Karate Kid", Daryl's triple jump spinning kick combo really stood out for me -- so amazing! I saw the movie just a week before I began my own training. Having met both of you, it really was a pleasure watching you guys talk story in this one!

I'd love to see someone do one of these really in-depth interviews with Chuck Norris black belts, John Natividad and Darnell Garcia. They definitely have their share of stories from the "golden age" of American karate. Both were on the Norris competition team. Garcia had a small role in "Enter the Dragon".

Darryl modeled his early career including the time period of the movie after Bruce Lee. He was, and may still be, a student of the Bruce Lee style. You can hear him speak of this in many interviews. So in a way, this is a touch on the golden age you mentioned.

I am fascinated with Darryl Vidal in The Karate Kid (sorry I haven't watch The Karate Kid Part 3 but will pay close attention to Master William Christopher Ford's scenes). I am glad you got to interview him.
I enjoy this episode tremendously. The kenpo kata was cool. Delighted to hear behind the scenes stories from Sensei Vidal. Your interview contains many nuggets of wisdom that are applicable to just about anyone. I don't do martial arts but I always believe that martial arts is about discipline, focus & humility so glad you talk & Sensei Vidal on those areas.
Thank you & hope to see you both in Cobra Kai!

"I forgot!!!" lol As someone that knows nothing I appreciate the sit-down sessions even more. I didn't know about the rattan .vs bamboo (hollow .vs not) so thanks for the info. I didn't really get the "real" marital artists agents the Hollywood version of what they are, but it make more sense now.

I love this interview and the training. It reminds me that we are not perfect we all mess up. What matters the most is how we carry on. I love how humble they are and don't carry the kobra kai mentality.

Thank you. There was a lot more footage shot in the Fumio Demura doc, probably 90 mins more. We had to make cuts to get it to 20 mins and to keep the focus on the story of the dojo. I appreciate you watching and commenting.

8:02 I'm surprised that the karate kid alumni does Escrima, and also he mention doing crane kick in beach scene in the first karate kid movie which is cool. But the most of this martial artist he played as competitor in the tournament scene which is also interesting.

He is real martial artist?! Ugh! I knew it why can i read and tell who are real martial artists everytime i suspect someone of being martial artists and then it is comfirmed i am stunned and sick because i only guess without research no bullshit it scares me
