    Well these days Small engine Hatchbacks are actually the same to insure as a mid size engine saloon if not more expensive because the statistics show that new drivers are having more accidents in these type of hatchbacks because every new driver gets them lol a 2.5 ltr 3 series BMW is the same to insure as a 1.3 micro

      Insurance is always tricky as hell to deal with, it's never black or white "this is cheap to insure or this is expensive" as it looks. Some cars definitely throw you off.

      agreed i mean for my first car i could of gotten something more expensive than what i did but then the other factor is i was a new driver at the time and new drivers always mess up. atleast if you get something that isnt that expensive then your not exactly worried if you mess up such as causing more wear and tear on the clutch etc. not to mention parking etc. i mean i was really crap at parking when i first passed. once you build up some driving experience and get more comfortable then sure get something more expensive

    I've been riding motorbikes most of my adult life, and today I just bought my first car, a 2003 Rover 45 2.0 diesel with 93000 miles for £790. Yes even at 31 years old and with the years of experience on the road on bikes, it was still a little nerve racking driving alone for the first time. I think the greatest challenges going from a bike to a car are getting used to the width of the vehicle, positioning the car in the middle of the lane (which is never that important on a bike) and judging which gaps it can get through and which it can't.

    • @tomhornsey9738

      Conway79 why a Rover may I ask?

    • @Pining_for_the_fjords
      @Pining_for_the_fjords 7 лет назад +1

      Tom Hornsey Good question. It was cheap, relatively low miles compared to other cars of a similar price, looked like it had been well looked after, and I like the retro look and feel.
      I also looked at a Honda Accord 2.2 diesel which seemed to be in good condition, and I'm partial to Honda because I've always ridden Honda bikes, but it was £990 with 190,000 miles.

    • @Paynos

      The size of the thing is definitely something to get used to, especially looking at parking and slipping through narrow spots. All about practice though, the more you drive the easier it gets.

      Scream Mnky That's absolute nonsense. Here in Ireland I spent around €300-400 on lessons and €160 on tests (failed the first time). That's nowhere near £1k, but it's still a lot. Speaking on behalf of others, I know drivers who are perfectly capable who failed the test three, four, five times before passing and required more than twenty lessons. That comes close to £1k. Why did they fail their tests? Multiple factors, many of which weren't associated with being a safe driver but more being incapable of handling the stress of a test or finding a specific maneuver a challenge, one you wouldn't normally use on your commute to work everyday.

    Paynos hope you don't mind this lengthy description. Now I passed my test in November 2015 at the age of 17 and am now 19 and still driving the same car. I drive a Peugeot 207 1.6 turbo diesel with a respectful 90bbc, for any people who wish to get a petrol car this is roughly a 1.4 petrol sport in comparison give or take. Now I went with a company called Bell for my insurance who are part of admiral. You get given a plug and drive system that acts a little like a black box but isn't. A small black device gets put into your cigarette adaptor for 3 months and if you drive well you get some money back and the rest of the 7 months to drive without it. However it only measures your acceleration and braking and has to be in 95% of the time so in theory you can unplug it when you overtake and not get done for harsh acceleration. To the point in hand however, it cost me £1100 at the time, I stated I was a student just passed and added my father as a named driver. The best quote I could find, now I recently renewed and after 1yr and 3 months of driving with a year's no claims that went down to £860. This company is great, give them a call and they can provide you with discounts on things such as your break down cover.

    • @j2owen723
      @j2owen723 7 лет назад

      Also guys insurance quotes can be very dependent on not just the age of the car, but how long you have had it. Spoke with my insurer about getting a new car and they said it would cost more for starters as I would not have any experience with the condition of this new car and therefore things could have gone wrong on it without me realising. Put it this way if you have two identical cars (make and model) , but you have owned one of them for 7 years and the other for 2 months, the latter will be more expensive to insure.

    for everyone still looking for first car ..my list :
    to 1500 ..sonething like seat ibiza tdi or polo
    2000-5k vw passat 1.9tdi or b6 audi a4 also 1.9tdi (one of the best engines in the world are 1.9tdis)
    5k-10k audi b7 audi a4 3.0tdi quattro (or 2.0tdi 170hp if 3.0 is too expensive to run (just not 2.0tdi with 140 couse engines are not realible ..
    10k-15k audi a8 3.0tdi (low milage) and thats actualy perfect car )
    anything more than 15k dont even look becouse it will lose its value too fast and its like throwing money away ..
    i know its all VAG but they are easy to work on and they are realibe ..
    offcourse this is for EU .. for all you americans ..just buy a V8 and enjoy while you can

    • @alexscandella4364
      @alexscandella4364 5 лет назад

      "Throwing money away". It really depends on your budget and how long the timespan of usage is. I bought a toyota gt86 model 2016 for 24k and it was more than just worth it.
      It really depends on your needs and if the budget is accurate. However, mentioning anything over 15k loses its value fast is absolutely correct but there is no need in buying a car for 5k nearly every year with about 120k km which only gives you costs. I spent about nothing for garage services and I'm surely driving this car a few more years.
      One fact that everyone should care about is the insurance money. Its literally crazy for every young car owner.

    First car (and current) is a 2005 Mini Cooper JCW with tuning pack. Bought for £3K in May 2K16. Had 65,000 miles on the clock and only cost £1300 with out a black box to insure.
    I was 17 with no previous driving experience.
    I live in a built up area which is a stones throw away from a 70mph dual carriageway (This is a big factor when insuring a car).
    Would recommend one of these cars to anyone, but please upgrade the exhaust and air filter to give the car a better sound.
    Hope this has helped someone 👍🙂

      I live in this US and my first car was a 94-96 Chevy Impala SS which had a 5.7L V8 LT1 corvette engine with 260hp plus a supercharger and did 157mph stock. Now, I drive a 09 Ford Crown Victoria which is fun and big car. It uses a 4.6L.V8 250hp with a 4 speed automatic and its top speed is limited to 130mph due to the rear axle ratio. I'm saving up for either a 2013 Shelby GT500 or a 2016 Cadillac CTSV which both have over 600bhp stock from the factory. The 2013 Shelby GT500 has 662bhp stock and the Cadillac CTS V has 640bhp stock.

    I bought a Honda Jazz - not the coolest car but it gets me around safely and reliably and was a good price for a well looked after, low mileage car that was top of the range when it was new :) Only been passed a couple of weeks but insurance is average as is road tax and fuel consumption is good so not too expensive. I think whatever your first car is, you'll always have a soft spot for it.

    When looking for a car I first looked at price as I didn't want to spend too much. So everytime I found a car in my price range second thing I did was check out the insurance cost. I found some cars for example a Clio, cost more in insurance than a golf? It was very strange. I think it also could be your location impacts the cost of insurance.

    I’m about to purchase a 16 plate Merc C class. It’s automatic so I’m not too worried about smashing it up as it’s relatively easier to drive an automatic. Not to mention the rear view cameras and other technology that will assist me with parking. Insurance for my first year would be 1.8K with black box. So yes quite excited for it :)

    When choosing my first car (which happened to be my second - first was gifted by my gran). I was looking at the insurance categories on Parkers website. I found the Fiesta Zetec climate TDCi was the highest spec'd car in the lowest categories. Bought a 2006(56) plate in 2012 for 3k and added 40,000 miles and sold it for 3k in 2014. I then get a Fiesta Zetec s from 2012 which cost 9k and sold it a year later for 8k and now in my Fiesta ST.
    Insurance surprisingly went down when getting the ST - perhaps due to its age? I'm turning 24 next so only 1 more year before the magic 25 and cheaper insurance premiums.

    Just buy a MK8 Civic Ex (Execuative). Cheap insurance, loads of space with clever spacing seats, refridgiated glovebox, cruise control, xenon headlights, dual climate control, stability assist, ABS, tyre pressure monitoring system, trip computer, satnav, digital speedometer, 35-45mpg (city driving), cheap to repair, quite fast and they always seem to last around 40% longer than you average hatchback.
    It's a steal at £2000-£5000!
    The only issue is the sporty feel which is normaly fun but not on speed bumps! That is the only comprise that i can think of!

    First car is a 2012 Ibiza FR. I adore it, insirance in my area is ridiculous, 1700 for me in my first year at 21, but was one of the very cheapest options. The 1.2 tsi engine is a gem, the turbo definitely makes it better, good to drive. Would recommend it to anyone looking for their first car. You dont have to have a corsa and its actually interesting to look at rather than the bland Polo for example.

I'd also went to Nissan but they had no used automatics at the time, so that left toyota as I really wanted a Japanese brand. I love my Toyota Yaris, it's pretty techy and had a built in sat nav with bluetooth, smart key fob that doesnt need to be inserted and automatic lights for evening so I don't have to remember to turn them on and very low milage

    Hey so I'm hoping you can answer some questions:
    1.) would you recommend a new car or a good second hand car for a new driver who plans on keeping the car for more than 3 years
    2.) what engine size would you recommend for a manual car to reduce the chances of stalling but also not being too powerful

    • @Paynos
      @Paynos  7 лет назад

      You'll definitely get more car for your money with the second hand market. But if you have the cash to do it then new cars do give you peace of mind with the factory warranties :)
      For petrol you'd want a 1.4/1.6 and up really, but diesels around that size are harder to stall too :)

    I don't necessarily believe having an older car will be more cost effective. Car insurance doesn't NEED to be so expensive - sometimes it isn't about the age of the car, but the size of the engine, whether it's a special edition etc. I purchased a very nice 2012 Corsa for just over £2000 and the insurance was £800. I don't live in a crazy expensive area either. Too many kids buying cars on finance having to pay stupid interest on it for years and years. Avoid the ''sport'' type cars, avoid anything above 1.2L engines, you'll be good. Anyone paying anything more than above their means will only be asking for financial troubles. In terms of lessons, everyone differs so there's no point in anyone commenting that someone MUST do it under a certain amount. I went through three instructors and had around 40 lessons in total, because my first two I just didn't find helpful. Lessons are also cheaper by purchasing them bulk, which can be done then with an intensive driving course. Whilst I appreciate nobody will necessarily have a thousand pound to spend upfront, you're more than likely to spend that, if not more anyway, on one or two lessons per week. Plus with an intensive course the rates of passing quicker are much higher. Just shop around and look at different deals. Basically - Avoid going for 2.0 litre engine ''done up'' sporty hatchbacks because that's where the issue will lay. Going for older cars don't always work as I said - sometimes you'll be paying more for the insurance of an older car anyway, so you may as well spend the money on a newer car with less for insurance.

      They shouldn't be too bad insurance wise, fairly similar to Fiestas and Corsas I'd say. They're fun little cars to drive for sure, older and french don't have the best name in reliability normally but I've had friends with old clios that have gone on for years with no trouble!
      Check out Boosted's videos on RUclips as he made quite a few on an older model clio!

    DO NOT bother with Ford Fiestas or polos. They're painfully slow (only have 60bhp), have very basic interiors, are overpriced for what you're getting, and weigh a fair bit
    Good cars:
    *Suzuki Swift- you get a lot of car for the money; reliable, rather nippy in both petrol and diesel variants (90/70-80BHP). The boot isn't as big as on other cars, but the leg room is amazing.
    *Seat Ibizia and Leon- Much better than the non-sporty polos.
    * Fiat Punto- sporty ones are really good, e.g. the GBT and Twinair
    *Peugeot 208
    *Vauxhall Adam, Astra or Corsa (newer corsas are pretty good)
