      Not surprised because there are a few organists who don’t play piano. I don’t have that much of a piano background meaning very minimal. In fact I know a theater organist who is top notch and can take orchestral scores from movies and transcribe it to organ for the stage performance but yet can’t play a single thing on a piano.

      Michael Waters I most certainly will! Our congregation did not have an organist for some six years until I moved into town! Because I love music and I adore the organ, I love doing it. I cannot play piano, though I love the sound of a piano (I play cords and melody only). At our old church hall I had a single manual digital organ with only a volume pedal and later a electronic keyboard (terible organ sound!). We recently bought a new church hall with a beautiful dutch made church organ and I simply love it! My goal is to play Händel's Largo on it someday and that will require A LOT of practice! it does not sound as great as the pipe organ that you play, but it has great sound nonetheless. Thanks for your encouragement, hopefully someday I will add a video of myself playing that particular piece, or even one of my favorite hymns or choir pieces! All the best.

    So, the playing technique is different, but are the sheet music/ notation interchangeable between the organ and piano? Thank you.

    • @1watersthree
      @1watersthree  2 года назад

      When it comes to hymns out of the hymnal yes the sheet music is the same. The bass notes are played on the pedals. Sometimes classical music will do that too and it would indicated in the music whether to play those bottom notes in the pedals or not. Often most classical music and a wide variety of hymn arrangements will have 3 staves and the lower staff will be the pedals. Hope this helps answer your question.

    You're wearing your organ shoes on granite flooring, And you don't want to do that because you have felt soles and when you walk on, granite, tile, stone flooring, you ruin the felt. You only want to walk on carpeted flooring when you have your organ shoes on that way it protects the sensitivity of the felt soles, You want to protect the felt soles On your Oregon shoes for a reason and that reason being in case you have to change from one pedal to the next, and especially if the peace that you're playing requires that you play a few glissandos or gliding from one pedal to the next, whether you're gliding up the pedals or gliding down the pedals.

  • @teleman07

    Thank you for pointing out comparing organ vs piano is very much like apples vs oranges.
    The hymn sounded something like a kid would learn on his first day on piano. Yet, I did not know what the organ's thing was about so I kept watching. Clearly organ pieces are not meant for piano, not because they are ridiculously easy, but they are right at their home when played on the organ. From now on, I will consider playing the likes of this hymn on piano as much sinful as playing maple leaf rag on a church organ.
    One last thing, I very much recommend you to quit using sustain pedal on piano when you perform, you are more than capable (more capable than me, thats for sure) of connecting the notes on piano without muddying the entire song like in this video; that pedal is only needed when connecting large gaps of notes, most prominent use is probably in ragtime where left hand constantly jumps? I just know that sustain pedal is meant to be used in short bursts and finesse for that kind of connenction.
    edit: yes, in maple leaf rag, I found myself constantly hammering the pedal just enough to prolong the bass notes enough to last but not bleed over. Organ looks really scary without sustain being available on demand. Mad props to organ players.

    The organ ( pipe) has been around much longer than the piano. And of course a large five manual organ with the 32' or 64' pipe would simply blow a grand or any piano away. The organ has a greater and more powerful range from down below 20hz to 20khz and can produce an ear splitting volume.
