That was great, I never would of thought of saw dust in the crack. I have always been cutting the crack open and adding apiece of wood in strips. The repair is good but always noticable. The way you did it you would never know that it was cracked at all. Thank you for all your work and knowledge.
Love seeing builders using ca glue. I discovered this method years ago and use it for so many things. I always save my fine dust shavings just for this.
Not to mention, as soon as the ca glue hits the wood dust it dries almost instantly. Makes repairs and fills go really fast.
Thanks you so much Robert. I've tried the trick a few times; it is amazingly easy and fun to do. What turned me on the most is your refinishing technique with Shellac. I can't wait to try it. I collect dust from all of my woods, put it in pill bottles and lable it. The ca glue whips are a must though! Cheers, Gilles from Canada.
I liked his work and also his Brazilian accent !! (big hug)
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you for watching. I am glad you enjoyed the video.
Glad you liked it. Happy Building!
I have used this technique on gunstocks and wood grips with excellent results for minor cracks, Epoxy is needed for larger ones or more structural re-enforcement needs to be done too, but for the majority of cracks, CA glue works well.
Welldone and Thanks from Athens!
Obrigado e s im vou estar em Sampa em Junho. Se der vamos nos encontrar para um cafezinho?
Like your rosewood dust dispenser. Suspect it was a spice jar in a previous life.
Imagine going into your local Lutherie supply store and buying a bottle of Brazilian Rosewood dust - "Four ounces 1963 Brazilian Rosewood dust. That'll be $900 please." LOL!
Thanks for the video.
I have used both methods you mention.
Great video Robert
Wow very good video. Thank you.
Show de bola parabéns
I'm now wishing I had spice jars filled with dust varieties, thanks.
Parabéns amigo!, ótimo trabalho!!
I humidify the guitar as best I can before closing the crack to avoid what you ask about.
Humidify???Can you explain me the process?
Thanks a lot
@@pacodelux7 Put the instrument in an environment that is the correct RH level. Over time the instrument will take on the humidity and swell. This will close the cracks. It is important to keep the instrument at the correct RH level to avoid more cracks in the future.
Robert, aquele abraço e muito obrigado! Gostei do português! Está chegando a data da sua visita ao Brasil... virá para São Paulo?
Muito bom. Sempre com boas dicas.
You mentioned accelerator turns the CA white. Have you found any difference if you wait a bit before using the ACC? I heard it can but have not tried it yet...Just wondering...Now that I've asked...I'm gonna have to try it myself..Be Well!
Hey Robbie, wouldn't humidifying the guitar again make the cracks close up a lot? Regards from a very soggy England
Thanks for the tip. We used to use some high e steel string wtih a ball on the end and a block of wood with a guitar tuner on top to set the cleats underneath (Don Teeter I think??). I see some folks use rare earth magnets now days to position and seat the cleats inside the guitars.
What method do you use.
You are cool, man !
How do I determine what finish is on my guitar?
great vid, the same process with cedar or spruce dust can be used for the top? what kind of glue do you use?
best regards, haim :)
You need to do some Bill Clinton impersonations. Your voice is just about dead-on.
Robert, what grit sandpaper do you recommend. If steel wool would also work, would I use 000? 0000? Thanks!
Unfortunately this technique doesn't work well on soundboard material like spruce or cedar.
hello obrien! last year i buy an custom acoustic with top solid spruce and backside solid mahogany. when the guitar is arrive at my home i see a little scratch that makes me feel so annoyed...the spruce is a combination of 2 spruce and i saw in the middle of spruce there are a little crack. i dont know is the coating is cracked or the wood is cracked..thats makes me confused everytime i saw it. Everytime i knock the top its always sound just like an normal acoustic guitar nothing wrong with the sound still bright and warm. many luthier said to me that if the wood is crack when we knock the wood it will sound like "krekk krekk" but its not happen on my guitar. did you know what happen with my guitar???i'm waiting for this guitar about 1 years so i must be very sad if the wood is crack again :(
what if there a bright color guitar as like engelman spruce or etc type ? how would they remove the scratches ?
haha, Thank you , I think!
I used 320 in this video.
What if the crack is alot wider and deeper. (One of my cymbals fell on my friends guitar)
Try to find a wood plate the same size as the cymbal and glue it in the hole.
Do you have any suggestions for fixing cracks on guitars that do not have a clear finish? I have a guitar that has a crack in the back, but the finish looks like Amber tinted nitro. It is quite an old guitar and the finish is fairly thin.
Thanks for the videos! They have been very helpful and informative =)
Then you must tint your lacquer when fixing the finish. Fixing the crack is easy but the finish repair could be a bit more complicated.
OBrienGuitars ok - thanks!
where can i buy rosewood and other types of dust? and do you think if i use wood filler / wood putty or soft wax filler as alternative , would be right?
you can make your own sawdust and no I would not use wax as a filler.
Hey I like the sawdust Idea. I just bought a harmony h-50 on ebay it has a few cracks I haven't got it yet but I am starting to educate myself. The guitar is missing a nut on top. that will be my first priority first I think. I am not a luthier by any standard. I have neither funds to hire one or to start buying files to make a nut from stock. But,...I can afford sandpaper. Is there a pre slotted nut that will work for this guitar, Neck width measurement 1 3/4", that you would recommend
+AmIonArock hum, I don't know. I have always just made nuts form scratch.

Is ca glue just Cyanoacrylate or super glue or crazy glue ?
justliketolook apparently he doesn't care2tell us. I wish i knew now too . :(
Yes it is Cyanoacrylate, which also super glue and crazy glue are the same thing but there is higher grades of CA glue so go with the professional grade if it is important work/
Whatkind of finishes/ varnish would you recommend?
It kind of depends on what you want the finish to do and what your market is. That is my case. For my classical guitars they must be shellac applied using the French polish method. For my acoustic I prefer shellac and that is what I have my students apply when they come and study with me. However, the market prefers high gloss finishes and that can me lacquer, polyester, urethane etc.
No need to remove the electronics.
Hi I have a guitar that was a big chip on the back of an electric guitar would it affect the way the guitar plays or future durability ?
It shouldn't have any affect at all.
OBrienGuitars thanks alot could you please do a video on how to fill the hole and referbish the finish or direct me to a video that you currently have
Try this one. ruclips.net/video/Y5R3FA0fV4Y/видео.html
When refinishing a violin or guitar what knd of varnish or stain should you use?
Is this a trick question? haha A good start is to use the type of finish that is already on the instrument. I recommend you study up on instrument finishes before attempting to apply one.
I have an old guitar and violin that have some worn spots and cracks . An acquaintance told me that that you must use special kinds of varnishes so as not to mess up the sound quality of the instrument because some varnishes may be too heavy any the acoustics will not be as good. Is that right?
Newsman Aba Yes, that is correct. Too much finish can inhibit tonal qualities.
When refinishing a violin can you use water-based stains? Also they say to usethe special"violin " laquers, not the store bought ones.Is there a difference?
i just have the money invest all files needed
i have a structual crack in a semi hollowbody from oversanding can you please it is a very thin wood
Send me a pic and I will see if I can offer some advice. My address is on my website. www.obrienguitars.com
will do, this project has been a diaster, i sanded through venner it looks awful, wife is gonna kill me, i need a solid color to cover this thing, its really bad
breathe and take a step back, you can probably still salvage it.
