Mike mignola is the biggest influence on my own art, his hellboy series is my favorite comic and maybe favorite media of all time so I really enjoy hearing any artists talk about his work. His work is just so cool with how it gives you exactly what you need to tell what’s happening. Also for computers and whatnot he doesn’t really use any he pretty much does all traditional, right through the inks (including his heavy shading), while getting Dave Stewart to do the colors for him digitally. He’s also one of my favorite black and white artists, because some of his drawings are kind of insane in black and white how he can get so much depth out of just black and white. I can’t say all of his influences because i need to study more painters, however comic artists wise I see a lot of jack Kirby in his art, the strong shapes and not adhering to strictly grounded proportions, as well as using a lot of Kirby dots. If you haven’t I would recommend studying jack Kirby art a little bit and seeing what you can grasp from him as well. Great video man, very cool discussion of mignola’s art!!

The true struggle of every artist is to try to break away from the same style of craft that he or she has become accustomed to and learn and master new forms of style and art form

I agree 100 percent. Like the biggest thing that made me wanna make a couple videos like this was to force myself to apply at and pick up some new skills

@misfitartists4357 I've been an artist like Dam for a long time, and I am still not showing my stuff on RUclips. When RUclips began, just was the format of your choice to help guide people or just carelessness, and I believe the first videos might have been games hahaa Those true gamers. I was now views or likes is way earn your way. Just seems are they ready for artist to know how I draw some say what happened to the circles or boxes o well ill just make myself born ok artist and just settle traditional artist just be a worker pioneer vibes and make your life just labor work and not continue education. Just time in your hands isn't as much to focus on today or yesterday. This is another timeline story of how I struggle

I think it is fascinating that in that example where you were talking about how the red looks like it glows compared to the black the yellow of the moon did not look like it was glowing as much as the red. I have always thought of yellow as a brighter color than red. if you were to put a grayscale filter on the image I’m pretty sure that the yellow would be a lighter shade of gray than the red yet the red still looked like it was glowing.
Perhaps this is some thing that is taught in formal art curriculums. Perhaps it is some other reason besides the value of the color that makes the eye not be attracted to the moon.

    • @misfitartists4357
      @misfitartists4357  Год назад +2

My theory would be that it has to do how the majority of the image isin a yellowish hue so the red stands out that much more. Like I said it's the contrast and what there is less of that draws your eye. If the image is mostly black than white will stand out. If the image is mostly white then black will stand out.

@@misfitartists4357 It is a shame that RUclips will not allow you to watch a video while writing a comment because I would like to re-look at that picture but I would lose what I have written. The phrase that I have always used was “the ordinary and the extraordinary”. The only thing that makes something extraordinary is a comparison to the ordinary. I absolutely love it that on top of having an infinite amount of things to learn there are so many ways to apply stuff you already know. Normally I would apply that by doing something like having everybody in the scene either looking to the right or the left but one person of interest looking directly at the camera or have the music steadily get louder in the scene and then when something of interest happens change it. The audience gets used to an ordinary so that you can show it an extraordinary

@@misfitartists4357 so the difference between light and dark is not as extreme as the difference between yellow and red in this picture. That is why the red looks like it is glowing even though the yellow is brighter. I think it is easy to forget that we perceive color because we have three different receptors in our eye but the difference between them is just the frequency similar to sound. I wonder if a color blind person would be able to understand better because they wouldn’t be distracted by how we perceive color. Seeing the world closer to how it actually is then how we perceive it

    Hi!
About shapes, I cant' wrap my head aroud the shapes Mignola uses. In my mind, you have to use recognizable shapes for your art to stand out, mostly rounds, squares and triangles. And here, Mignola uses these kind of oval shapes.
Also, I was told to vary lines. A straight line can complement a curvy line, and here, look at Conan's thighs, it's symmetrical, almost like children's drawings legs.
Except, Mignola does it wonderfully. His shapes are appealing, I can't get why. It's such a mystery and a beauty to watch.
You said it yourself, the shape of Conan's head is nothing spectacular, and yet it looks powerful full of strong lines, reminding me of some Indian faces in western movies.
Could you please expand? I. JUST. DON'T. GET. IT.

Hey sorry for the late reply. I was thinking of doing another video breaking down the different ways to shade with blackm but I will try and verbalize my hypothesis. You are right a good recognizable shape is good. But that just means simple andI would argue ovals can still fall in that category.
Now one of the things he is doing is further emphasizing his design with his high contrast use of blacks. So however simple or weird a shape he uses is as long as it is a black against a white or light or visa versa that will be striking. And even thought some of the base illustration may look simple or even childlike its about his placement and how readable it is. Like how anime or action artists will start drawing a ninja or hero with less detail because they are moving so fast. Does that help?
also you are right a lot of comic artists are fans of the curve vs straight method and its a good one. Reference bruce tim for that. But sometimes a simple stick arm as simple as it is is still all you need. It's like normally texture is great but some artists utilize very flat styles and it works for their project,

@@misfitartists4357 Ok. I think I get it a little bit more. In the same vein, I would say that Hugo Pratt's Corto Maltese comics are appealing for the same reason. A stroke here, a stroke there and boom. You have it, a sunset, a human head, a city.
They say simplicity is an upper form of complexity, god they're right.
      God they're right.

Unless it's a watercolor painting, Mignola is only doing black and white artwork. Another artist (Dave Stewart recently) does the colors.
