I was in a slump and all I wanted was to read manga but then I picked up A Magic Steeped in Poison and... boy did that erase my reading slump I enjoyed it sooooo much that I am vibrating with the thought of reading the next book!
YAY!!! This made my day!! Read about 55 books so far this year, and I’m trying to see how many books I can read by the end of December! Hope you’re doing well! Love ya!
PREACH ON THE MUSIC/ SINGING SCENES IN BOOKS!! I also read another K-pop romance book and DANG! While I loved and had so much fun reading it, I almost dropped an entire star the minute they started singing and I had to read the lyrics. I didn't even read it, I just straight up skipped that whole scene while screaming
About XOXO: For me, I realized the thing that was missing was the ROMANCE. Like, the MC gets to know his boy group more than she actually gets to know him on page. I wanted to see more of their texts, more interaction with them. Instead we get her hanging out w his bandmates A LOT and not a lot of HIM. I gave it a 3 star and it got me out of a reading slump (I read it in one sitting) but I do wish we'd gotten just a bit more than what we were given.
I actually discovered your channel a while ago and have been binge-watching since then (even stuff from five to seven years ago :D). I love seeing so much videos from you lately! I think you're super authentic and just so humble and human, I really like listening to you and I've put a lot of books on my tbr because of your recommandations. The only bad thing is that I'm from germay - so I have to wait for the translation a lot of the time :D but the books still go on my tbr, I guess I'll wait then - and they'll better be translating it! :D
I've been watching your videos since I found your channel in order to improve my listening skill in english and I am glad to say that my listening skill is getting improve everytime i watch your video😇
If you're going through a slump, I would recommend reading The Graveyard Book by Neil Gaiman. It's a light book that's on the shorter side and I think it would be right up your alley.
been reading mostly fanfiction this year, which caused me to fall behind massively with my reading goals for 2022 and killed my motivation to read books. But, wirdly, I've been experiencing a very similar thing with fanfics lately where all of them are either really mediocre or straight up bad...
So glad to hear someone else struggles with this 😂😂 I've done a lot better this year but the past few years I've read more fanfiction than books and finally I got myself back on actual books lol
I know nothing about k-pop, but "K-pop confidential" is translated in Bulgarian (I'm from Bulgaria), aaaand last year I've read it and really loved it! 💚💛
I’ve been wanting to read Mika In Real Life! I adored the Tokyo Ever After duology, so I’ve been looking forward to this one but I’ve been in a reading slump 😭 Slowly getting out though. SOON 😃
Going to recommend you a book that would have 100% taken me out of my reading slump *if* I had just let myself binge it instead of trying to savour it. It's the 7 (or 7-1/2 in the US publishing market) Deaths of Evelyn Hardcastle by Stuart Turton, which is described as Agatha Christie meets Groundhog Day. To entice you, I'll tell you it begins with an invitation and a map of the grounds. 😉 Our main character is trapped in a manor house, reliving the same day until he can determine who murdered Evelyn. However, each day he's in the body and mind of a different guest, needing to use their relationships and the information they are privy to in order to flesh out the picture. In addition, there are other(s?) attempting to do the same thing, or maybe to kill him before he figures it out, and our MC can't remember who he is or why he's here doing this in the first place. It's got a ton of interesting characters, fast pace, reveal after reveal, and I had a Google Note full of utterly incomprehensible questions that would get answered (kind of) only to be tipped to the side and posed again. Highly, highly recommend for like a feverish autumn weekend when you just want to devour a really intricate story.
Even though I am a Kpop Fan I have no interest in reading XOXO - but I want to read some books by Emiko Jean! I am currently reading ''You'll Miss Me When I'm Gone'' by Rachel Lynn Solomon (and I like it so far!) Oh and I've tried to read ''Book of Night'' but I DNF'd it :D :D
i bought my annihilation when you first mentioned it and have yet to read it, going to prioritize it and some other books i bought this year next month. mason deaver and emery lee's latest books have been some of my recent reads and i really enjoy them bc the characters are so real and you just go through the feels with them.
I’m reading through the dark artifices series and I’m really enjoying it. looking for motivation to carry on with Lord Of Shadows. How do you find the motivation and have you got any tips to help a fellow reader? Love you Jesse, you da best ❤️❤️
Great Video Jesse and I’m currently reading Almost There The Disney Twisted Tale About The Princess and the Frog 👸🏿🐸 and so far I’m enjoying it have you read any of the Disney Twisted Tales they’re so good I think you would definitely enjoy them Jesse Have a Wonderful Day & Happy Reading 📖😊
I’ve had so many mediocre books in the last 2 months too!! I’m glad I’m not alone but I hope we love our next reads! The mediocre ones have been The Paris Library, The Ravens, and Anne of West Philly. You might like The Paris Library, I did like the beginning and middle but it’s just kind of slow and I’m just tired of slow books right now.
Mika in Real Life is on my tbr strictly because Mika is my maiden name (although pronounced My-kah and I used to get into fights with people who'd say it Meeka). Hearing that it's also really good bumps it up my list.
My boyfriend bought me emiko jean's book empress of all seasons a few years ago and its started an absolute obsession with their work. I 100% recommend it as a read it even comes with a glosaary that goes over all the words that you might not know.
Adding my annihilation to my tbr! Love Finley Donovan. I have to read Mika in real life. I liked book of night! I liked the magic too. I love your videos!
I just read The Sunbearer Trials by Aiden Thomas and I loved it, I haven't been sucked into a book the way I was with it for a while so I definitely recommend it
Hey Jesse have you read Dark RIse? I personally think it's a great fantasy book and would like to know your thoughts on it :) Also been following your vids for quite a while and recently started watching them again they're really fun and entertaining:)
It hasn't exactly bee neutral for me of late, but it has been months since I've had a five star that wasn't a reread. I might get one soon. Clockwork, Curses, and Coal is the second in Rhonda Parrish's Punked Up Fairy Tales Series. She is an editor that has a great eye for short stories, and this collection is a steampunk and gaslamp one. I love it. And it is looking to be a five star.
Axie Oh is one of the author's that I will read everything she puts out. I will go to Barnes and Noble the day of to get her book. All her books are cute and fun and I like them. Rebel Seoul and its sequel are amazing. The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea is one of my favorite things I've ever read and owned and I love it with all my heart and soul and its one of my favorite books ever. I'm also a huge kpop fan so XOXO was perfect for me. Of course RM from BTS is the idol my brain made Jaewoo into. Axie Oh's writing has my whole heart.
I have The Cartographers on my.list for a special project that I am doing and you are the second person I know that was bored by it 😨 If you're in the mood for a hopeful dystopian that has really cool religious rep and also some aliens, i totally recommend A Half-Built Garden. Very character driven and VERY good.
I thought Book of Night was just ok too (beautiful copy btw). Shame cuz I love most of Holly Black's books. 🌜 I need to hurry up and finish my current book because Nona The Ninth by Tamsyn Muir just came out and Gideon and Harrow were amazing. 💀 Jesse, I don't remember if you've read Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree but its a cute book that I think you'd enjoy. ☕️
Same thing has been happening to me for some time; the books just haven’t been that great. I recently reread the first Captain Underpants book after a while, and I really enjoyed that!
You could try Little Mushroom: Judgement Day. I stumble upon it on Goodreads and cast it out for a long while, but omg, 5/5, best book I've read this year

Good books too pull you out of slumps are Aristotle and Dante discover the secrets of the universe, the house in the cerulean sea, and the invisible life of Addie LaRue :D hope this helps someone lmao
I think ud like Under the Same Sky by Joseph Kim. It is his memoir about fleeing North Korea and it made me laugh, made me cry, and I want people to read it so much.
I've read both Finlay Donovan and XOXO and I couldn't agree more. Finlay Donovan is Killing It was hilarious in the coincidences and the interactions between Finlay's interaction with the woman who misinterprets her conversation. XOXO was just meh
I think you would like long live the pumpkin queen and that time I got reincarnated as a slime manga if has a feel of a video game it's so cute and funny with very good characters

very clever jesse

Thank you for putting Mika In Real Life on my radar. It sounds incredible!
Yes!! It gave me lots of feelings & I adore her writing style so much.
I was in a slump and all I wanted was to read manga but then I picked up A Magic Steeped in Poison and... boy did that erase my reading slump I enjoyed it sooooo much that I am vibrating with the thought of reading the next book!
I’m getting to that book this month… excited to read it!!

Jesse have you read All My Rage??
Have you read any classics? That’s what I do. Alternate btwn YA and classics. Rn I’m reading Little Women
I think books built on character interactions read more like a script for a tv show or movie rather than an actual book
I had the same feelings about book 2. I don’t think I’ll be reading book 3
Lyrics in books SUCK YES 👏🏾 please don’t do it ☺️ otherwise I read Finlay Donovan is Killing It and I was expecting it to be dark and snarky OOP 😂
I guess you can say the magic in book of night is …..
Shady (insert booing noise here )
In May I read three 3-star books in a row, sandwiched between two 4-star books
I was so disappointed by Book of Night 😭 it was just so boring and I honestly did not care about any of the characters 🤷♀️ very meh~
also i feel the titel way too much😭😭 also read so many mediocre books this year :/
It wasn't until you read the titles outloud that I realized it is in fact "Finlay Donovan" and not "Finally Donovan" 💀
