I'm not wanting this to sound critical, but it is possible to replace the serpentine belt without remove the bottom plastic skidplate. It's not easy, but a lot easier than removing the skidplate, especially when you're having to do it on the side of the road (been there, done that!). Like a Boy Scout, I always carry a spare belt, fuel filter, P/S fluid, & oil..., b/c they never fail when you're sitting in your garage!
I have a 2004.5 LLY Duramax, 4x4, and I've had to learn the "hard way", how to do SO many engine repairs! Thank God for all of the RUclipsrs who share their experiences!!
    Good video!

No kidding! Thanks GM; for NOT putting a belt routing sticker in the engine compartment.....

Very help. Thx for the video. FYI. I was able to get a pull bar onto the tensioner by only removing the top bolt that holds the radiator fan in place.

Just finished my first belt R&R on my LBZ; the video was a yuuuuuge help Farm Dad!! Was able to complete the task without loosening the lower left shroud bolt; which is derned near impossible to get to on my truck anyway. Of the 50+ belts I've replaced in my 68+ years; this one ranks as the most challenging, requiring more f-bombs than the rest combined! That PITA fan shroud should have been thought out a little better. When you buy your new belt to replace; be sure and buy a box of bandaids and a 50# bag of patience as well.

Thanks for video it helped tremendously and I replaced the serpentine belt too . Had to thread belt by tight area above the harmonic balancer and shroud by taping the belt with a tail both directions to go sideways thru tight spot.Ten minutes to put new belt on.

Very helpful video. I can see how this would be easier with two people for threading the belt on and off.

I for one, am very much looking forward to when my kids are old enough to help me wrench! It will be a game changer. 😆

I found this video quite helpful. Thanks!
On my LMM it was pretty tight to get to the shroud bolt at the bottom passenger side. I just left it as-is. With the top center nut off, I could move the shroud enough to get a 1/2" breaker bar on the tensioner. Then as you mentioned, it was fine just leaving it there as I replaced an idler.

How can Chevy design this so backwards. My 1500 and Tahoe is like 10-15mins if I had to guess. But this video did help me when I prep my LMM for surgery :)

The secondary fan shroud is a PITA. I removed it and left it off for serviceability access. I had a P0087 code developed a couple of 1,000+ miles later. I am not sure if this contributed to it. Secondary fan shroud: to direct airflow or just keep finger away from the fan....

    • @FarmDad
      @FarmDad  3 года назад +1

I know many people have removed them with no problems. I tow heavy weight super often so I left mine on as I believe it is meant to direct some air flow.

I put the shroud back on just for sack of not sure... changed fuel filter again just after 2,700 miles. Not fun along the road due to the fender liner removal for access:(

I’ve read where guys choose to leave the fan shroud off .
It’s a lot easier wo it but I think I installed my belt wrong but I took a cellphone foto and when I cranked up the truck a idler pulley bolt got sheared off .
I had replaced the water pump and lower hoses and upper hoses along w new idler pulleys and serpentine belt.
Let’s see what happens again .

Gosh, it's been ages since I made this video so I don't even remember the bolt you are referring to 😁. But if I didn't take it out in the video, then I was able to do it without taking it out. Regardless, sorry you wasted 15 minutes.

@@FarmDad oh no dude im not even mad im thanking you, you the man! Either the left side of the fan shroud thingy or the right side one can stay in. I did a road service and thanks to your video i made a nice little $200 at 8am before i went to change a freightliner’s air compressor. Your video made me and a struck driver have a better day! So god bless you

Your ac pump looks like shit lol maybe you need a new clutch assembly lol that’s why I’m searching this video. Cut my old belt off while replacing ac pump to find out a new one where I live is 94$. Great video tho thank you.

Farm Dad ya I was kidding video helped a lot tho. You would think I would be used to how time consuming a duramax is to work on or how tight everything is packed in there but it surprises me at every repair. Cheers!
