      Plus i have a doubt too:
      Which is correct? 1) yesterday only i cleaned the sofa Or yesterday i cleaned the sofa

    What she actually said was right and sounded more natural than the example on the board. She used natural English when she wasn't thinking about it. This often happens with teachers -we think about the 'rules' (I don't like that word) and then teach things which aren't natural. She is not the only teacher guilty of this -lots of us make this mistake at times. We are only human.

    My dear Rararevoluta, when we refer to chocolate like candy, we can use so in the singular as in the plural. In this case, chocolate is a countable noun. Ex.: She loves to receive chocolates of her boyfriend. Whereas, when we refer to chocolate like a drink we must use in the singular. Ex.: She loves to drink chocolate (even if she drinks 10 cups of chocolate)

    "I only did it" instead of "It is/was me who did it"

      @@shivanipalani8047 yeah. We Indians commonly have a problem of thinking in our mother tongue while conversing in English. This creates too many mistakes in the way we talk in English. So - I only went or I only did it means "Nobody else went, or nobody else did it/that", while that is not what we mean to say.

  • @fluentmedicalenglish
    @fluentmedicalenglish 11 лет назад

    This is quite confusing because sentences 2 and 4 have the same meaning -although sentence 4 sounds a little unnatural. Intonation can sometimes change the meaning of only in a sentence. I did like the initial example though of the student using only incorrectly -good for raising awareness of this problematic word. It may be the case that 'only' is used differently in different forms of English.

    So, these are examples when it is okay (perhaps 'mandatory'??) to "split the infinitive"? (On a side note, "splitting the infinitive" is not a hard and fast rule these days. For instance, "to really like something" (not "to like something really" or "to like really something"); or, even if you want to emphasize the adverb, splitting the infinitive is still acceptable.
