Hope you enjoy learning about how to use a Magic Eraser with pastel painting! Let me know if you have any other techniques for reworking paintings!
Love how you work and thanks so much for Magic eraser technique. Janet
Sanded paper can be pricey, so is Magic Eraser. I do something else and it works. Most sanded surfaces can take water (check your paper). I rinse my paper under cool water being careful not to wet the back. It eliminates dust. I blot off excess water, then l sandwich the pastel paper between newspaper or newsprint. I place a cookie sheet on top of the sandwich and place a few heavy cans or jars on top. I usually use my kitchen counter after dinner for this. The next morning the paper is flat and dry and ready to go. I have done this for several years and it works every time.
Thank you for always trying new things for us. ❤️
Thank you! I am an oil landscape/skyscape painter..mostly using tonalism techniques. Pastels have been drawing me, and your channel is amazing!💚💚💚
You are so welcome!
Susan! That’s amazing! Also, know that for smaller areas or details on a pastel painting, you can also use a kneaded eraser! Shape it for details and tap it to remove pastel! Love that you’re always experimenting! Love your floral painting!!!🩵🩵
Oh yes, Linda. I've used a kneaded eraser similar to how you described but I always forget about that technique. Thanks for reminding me sweetheart!
I have used Magic Eraser on watercolor when I've needed to make a correction, and it worked pretty well. I never thought about it working with soft pastels, too! I'll have to remember this one. Thanks, Susan!! Your videos are wonderful!
Great techniques! I've never ever used a Magic Eraser!
Thank you so much, @tthappyrock368! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
Now I realize why those sponges that came with the Panpastels feel so familiar! 😂 it has had me wondering for months!
Mind-blowing!
Just wondering if chemicals from the magic eraser will compromise archival qualities of the paper and pastels.
Go to this Google page and it tells you there are no chemicals it also tell you what it is.

The magic eraser is melamine and the residue can be rinsed away with water.
Wonderful Susan, thanks.
Thank you so much, @SirPrancelot1! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
Thanks for the valuable tip!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing this
My pleasure!
I use the magic eraser for my watercolors. Use it slightly damp and onnsmallervareas...works like a charm. I never thought about using it for pastels and now I have another tool to use in my art bag! Thanks.
Thank you so much, @paulah317! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
I’m loving all her techniques ps I’ll be back soon had some moving issues that I had to take care of but once I’m done organized again I’ll be rejoining the group
wonderful Robert, you will be missed. I pray your move goes well my friend!
Good job thx !
hi Susan thanks and bravo!
🙂 🙂 🙂 ❤, @emanuelaboiardi9520
So ironic that I came across your video, as I wondered myself if the magic eraser might work. I have not had luck with just using the brush off method, followed by water, on Pastelmat. I will try your technique and report back with regards to how the magic eraser technique works on Pastelmat.
Thank you so much, @bonniebishop2755! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting! Can't wait to hear your report!
You can use it for watercolor, too! Not on student grade paper, but good watercolor paper holds up! Make sure it’s the plain eraser with no soaps in them.
Oh.... wow, thanks!!! Does it take off much of the color?
@@monetcafe I'll have to try this... it might have a lot to do with the pigment (staining or non-staining).
I use the magic eraser for watercolor too. It takes off most off the pigment. I use it for smaller areas that need correcting use the sponge slightly damp, not wet.
Fun.
Thank you so much, @dancurry1901! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
I tried a bison painting, and wasn't liking how it was coming out at all, so I took alcohol and scrubbed the pastel off, but it left a ghost image of the bison which I look at now and think that it doesn't look too bad. The base values are still there mostly, might try to go over it again
Oh yes, I love that aspect about creating ghost images. Often they look pretty good and don’t need much reworking.
I like that
Thank you so much, @dancurry1901! I'm so glad you liked it! Happy Painting!
Thank you for sharing this magic eraser tutorial. I will be starting pastels in February and this will be great knowledge to have if I need to start a piece over. Thank you . QUESTION. Unrelated to the tutorial other than you showed your tablet mounted on your board close to the end of the video. May I ask how it is mounted. Would be nice to have my tablet in front of me instead of on the side on a table at a lower eye level. Again thank you for your time in making these tutorials. I know it takes a lot of time for editing ECT. Looking forward to your answer. God Bless!! Jill C. Huachuca Arizona😊❤
Hello Jill, in Arizona, I’m excited for you to start your pastel painting journey! And the question I get all the time is the one that you ask about my iPad on my board. It’s really quite simple. I have an iPad cover that just kind of flops over the top of it, and I simply put the cover over the back of the board and it holds the iPad like magic. I think I got my iPad cover at Walmart. Hope that helps sweetheart, and have a blast!
Thank you for such a a quick response. I wasn't expecting to hear back from you so soon THANK YOU. So much appreciated. So simple. I have a tablet that has a jacket like that. I will try and see if it holds as well. Thank you again for taking the time to respond. So grateful. Have a blessed evening. Looking forward to your next you tube tutorial.🙏✝️🕊️🤗 Jill C. Az
I'm finding masking tape is a bit too tacky and the paper rips sometimes. Maybe a low tack tape might be better? Not sure if it would hold well enough to keep paper from buckling?
The tape that I use is artist tape. It’s a little more expensive than masking tape, but I find it holds better, and also removes better from my surfaces.
Great … what is the paper or sleeve you are storing your paintings in please ?
I get my plastic storage bags from www.clearbags.com. They have tons of options so here is a link to get you to a place where you can choose the bag size. I always choose sizes that are a little bit larger than my painting sizes. www.clearbags.com/crystal-clear/bags/protective-closure/high-clarity
Thank you but I’m in Australia I’ll look for somewhere now that I know what they are 😊
Unfortunately, there is a down side to the magic erasers. Magic Erasers actually break down into super-abrasive microplastics that can wash down drains and into the environment. Avoiding them is something to consider in order to preserve the beautiful nature scenes we love to paint.
Thanks for that input, @kf8045! I'll have to keep that in mind!
Nature needs to move out of the way as we dominate it on earth as we will in space. Nature is already a conquered foe.
