    A really cheap alternative to pumice gel is to use pumice powder (from the chemist) mixed with PVA glue and a little water. Add any colour you want and do 2 coats using an ordinary housepainting brush.

    I used gym chalk for mine. Cause I didn’t have pumice. Worked very well. Gym chalk, white Elmer’s glue, a bit of water and a little grey paint. Because I like a tinted surface to paint on.

    (I only use pastels for prep drawings for oil paintings, so im not good at it, but) I think it's great that you're giving these options to your viewers. It is a tradition in oil painting to explore surfaces textures grounds etc. and I really think the benefits would tranfer well onto pastel painting. Brava

    Sorry, another question. Do you think the pumice gel alone or clear gesso gives more tooth or about the same. Does the mixing of them create more ?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 года назад +3

      I’m still doing some experimenting and I want to do a better comparison of the two different applications. But in general, clear Gesso is one of my favorite products to use to create my own pastel surface. It’s easy, has a nice amount of grit, and it’s clear so that any underpainting shows through. I’ll try to share a review once I paint on more of these boards.

    Great video, thanks, Susan! I'm surprised that they didn't buckle or warp....I've tried some and got buckling etc....have you every moistened the back then to get rid of the warping? And at what stage do you put them under heavy books -- I presume after they're dry? Or do you need to spray lightly with water again before putting under weights?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  2 года назад +1

      Hi Paula, yes I have wet the back (not too much water though) and it helps. But I usually don't even have to do that. And yes, I put them under something heavy only after they have dried. Although Gatorboard is more expensive I think it warps less. I still have to try though.

    Is there any method to permanently fix pastels, other than fixative? modge podge or laquer etc?

    • @monetcafe
      @monetcafe  11 месяцев назад

      No, unfortunately, the only method to preserve a pastel painting long-term is to frame it under glass. I have dreamed of a way to be able to fix a pastel painting without it, altering the colors, but so far there are no fixatives that offer this hope. I do use fixatives to set the color sometimes during the painting process, but I never spray the final painting because it darkens the colors. My favorite fixative is Sennelier Latour.

    Sorry, one more question -- is it possible to create a recipe card with higher contrast? When I print it out it's very hard to read, being low contrast and also small type (even though I enlarged it some but still needed to fit it to the paper).
