- In this video, we diagnose a bad A/C Clutch, remove and install a new one.
Checked power and ground to the clutch, removed the clutch, rotor and magnet. Cleaned the surfaces and installed new components and shim the clutch in the truck without removing the compressor.

Great video but I will add these 2 cents. There are four bolts holding that compressor in place, removing them allows the compressor to be lifted up a bit without disconnecting ac hoses and it makes install the clutch a whole lot easier. Especially installing the pulley assembly as you are not hammering at an awkward angel. 👍

Just want to say thank you found that video very informative I will now be able to take care of my situation AC works just fine but making a little noise replaced all the idler and I'm sure it's the bearing inside the clutch pack
Another thing you can do before committing to pulling it, is: Take two jumper wires and clamp them to your battery, and touch 12v and ground directly to the pins on your compressor. On the 7.3L The top is the ground and the bottom is power. Sometimes you can hit it like that and it works; so just click it open and closed several times and work it loose. Sometimes it will work well for another year maybe. Or if it's dead with your leads- then you KNOW it's dead for sure. You can put an inline 10a fuse if you really want to be safer.

To more easily place new magnet on without damaging.
Drain the coolant.
Remove coolant Reservoir
Unbolt compressor
...compressor only, no a/c hoses
Stand compressor up as best as you can for a better angle
Use Dead Hit rubber hammer.
Do Not use metal hammer, will damage unit.
Breaker bar or ratchet who cares right 🤪🤠
Great video. This might be my problem in my 2001. My AC works great its only when towing a load does the AC go in and out at higher rpms. There is almost a pulsating sound in the engine bay. Does that sound like it could be the clutch going in and out and squealing like that? Thanks for any help.
Hey there! That does sound like it could be slipping at higher RPMs. You may want to check and see if you can pull some shims out first before replacing. The pulsating sound probably is the clutch slipping. Although, I’ve heard of pulsating sounds with stock turbos under load too. That would be a “wuh wuh wuh wuh” sound
Found my ac clutch flew off the pulley and was loose under hood lol. So I gotta figure out if I need new clutch or whole new compressor or what
As long as the aluminum neck that is tapped onto is still there you should be ok
Do you have the bearing number for the belt pulley? Just want to take a spare bearing so i can swap the bearing out if it fails in the bush
Hmmm sorry, I do not. I don’t recall if it was offered at the part store and I didn’t get a look at it when I disassembled
So most times when you have just the clutch not engauging its just the clutch is the problem i dont have to replace rhe whole compressor??
Unless the compressor failed internally you can get away with just the clutch…Helps to check the A/C relay and sometimes if you’re lucky you can just take out one of the shims behind the center bolt and get a little more life.

Is this possible on the van bodies as well? or would i need to remove the compressor? thanks.
I honestly am not sure. I would imagine it’s in the same location on the engine but clearance in there might be tough
Thank you very much for the vid. You are not a hack 98% would do it this way. It was really quick and easy I was back up and on my way in a matter of about an hour or so .I didn’t have the time or the money to do it the dealer way . So thank you again

So after watching video I decided I was gonna try and get my ac working on my 99 f250 7.3. I went to test the compressor and I’m not getting any power and after trying to search online I’m having trouble find what supplies power to the compressor. Any ideas? I’d appreciate it
There should be a relay in the power distribution box under the hood driver side. Also, keep in mind that if the a/c system isn’t fully charged or overcharged it won’t allow the relay to turn on as well. Those are some things to check
@@bryanbuilt360 thank you for the reply. I’ve searched for fuse box descriptions and I am yet to find one that points to a relay. Every video I’ve watched which doesn’t seem to be many on my specific vehicle is it’s pcm controlled. I pressurized the system with nitrogen to see if I could get it to cut on but nothing. Not sure what to check now. Maybe high and low pressure switches 🤷♂️

I know early 99 trucks were a strange model. What was the build date on bin sticker? This forum was the closest I found. Someone had a wiring diagram and fuse locations. Seems like you only have a diode and not a relay possibly?
@@bryanbuilt360 it’s an early 99 my luck seems lol. I did see that ac diode mentioned on one diagram I found which my truck doesn’t have a diode in that slot which may be part of the problem. Thanks for the info
My 99F250 has 533000 miles on it.Never touch the air conditioning system and it blows like forty six degree air. Problem is yesterday.I turned the air on for the first time and there is nothing happening.So I looked under the truck.My center boat and the front of the clutch is falling off l o l. The magnetic coil and the pulley are obviously still there but and I'm getting 12 V to the coil, but there's no clutch.And now I'm having a hard time finding that center boat and clutch only.I don't want to have to buy the whole assembly
That magnet may have gone out… you don’t want to buy the clutch assembly or a whole compressor? Wouldn’t be too bad to buy the clutch with the magnet…
@@bryanbuilt360 I'm gearing 12 v to coil and when it's energized, it sucks a screwdriver to it. Advance auto only sells the whole assy, but autozone has the bolt and clutch plate which is all I need. The 3 shims were still somehow stuck to it so I have them. I ordered the kit from advance today as I have account w them but they couldn't tell me if bolt comes w it or not. If it don't, then I'm going to autozone, which I don't particularly care for 🤣
@@michaelcollins1899 good to know! But I share the same feeling, I had to buy 8 injectors from A Z during the pandemic because I couldn’t find anywhere else… didn’t turn out to well 🤣
