  • We did a mini renovation in our kitchen, keeping the existing cabinets, doors, and floor. We love our new space and how it turned out, and saved a lot of money by doing it ourselves. I'll be doing a follow-up video sharing the process and costs involved.

    It looks so good, Jen! I have a question about the built-in oven. We're planning on making over our kitchen as well but keeping the existing cabinets and just replacing the hardware and benchtop. I really would love a built-in oven but I haven't been sure how to match it up to our existing cabinets which are dark blue. How did you match yours up, including the toe kick?

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  4 года назад

      Thank you! Great question - I was worried we wouldn't be able to match the cream. Luckily the "Antique White" colour option was a close enough match, although if you really look you can see that it's slightly lighter (the oven cabinet panels and toe kick). For dark blue I'd recommend using a laminate primer and paint, you can get the paint tinted to a colour that matches your cabinets.

    The only thing I would add would be a colourful roller blind on the window for a pop of colour.

    Oh Man! I know you really disliked the counter tops and I always thought they weren't so bad...until now. haha. I love the new counters! You guys did a fantastic makeover. So G. did finally go for the wood laminate wall/back splash idea, I see. You once said he wasn't so keen on the hallway. Our house is 90% tongue & groove wood walls/ceilings. I love them, but they do get old. J. isn't crazy about painting them so stained it is. I love how you made everything look new just by changing out a few things! If you hadn't said you would never know the glass back splash part wasn't intentional being easy clean up and all behind the cooktop/hob. Great job guys.

    Jen your kitchen looks amazing. I have a question about the vinyl planks. I have also gone for the shiplap look in our bathroom, but we used treated ply that my husband cut into 170mm planks. It looks ok, but not great because the edges aren't perfect. I have already stripped down the walls in our kitchen and laundry to apply the same treatment, but now I'm fascinated by the vinyl you used. Vinyl would be so much better in those spaces, and I love the idea of stick on. Which vinyl did you get, and where did you purchase it? (I'm a few hours south from you, near Greytown, in the Wairarapa).

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  4 года назад

      Thank you! The planks I used aren't actually vinyl, they are Hanwood laminate flooring from Bunnings (the 8mm ones). I used an adhesive like No More Nails to stick them on. Here's the one I used: www.bunnings.co.nz/hanwood-2-15m2-8mm-farmhouse-oak-laminate_p8902195
      Hope that helps :)

    Hi! Very good job!! My kiwi partner and I just bought a house on the Kapiti coast (NZ) and we would like to get some Ikea products delivered to us, can you tell me what is the company you were using for that please? Many thanks!

    • @AThousandWords

      Thanks! There are a few different import companies, just search "Ikea NZ" and they will come up. I ordered the rails from Idiya and I think the hooks were from Urban Sales.

    I learned a new word "hob?" for what we call a range top in the US. Are you enjoying cooking with gasl?
    Another curiosity for me is why have an electric kettle instead of using a plain kettle on the hob to boil water? Is it faster or less expensive to operate? Rarely see electric kettles in the US. Thank you for sharing.

    • @miriamhancock7790
      @miriamhancock7790 4 года назад +2

      Electric kettles or jugs as we call them are very quick and efficient. They also switch off when the water has boiled so much safer then leaving a kettle on the gas hob to keep boiling away until you take it off.

    • @AThousandWords
      @AThousandWords  4 года назад

      Love cooking with gas, it's just so much better, although we are on half pressure as our regulator needs to be upgraded. Miriam gave a perfect explanation for kettles (and they are faster too).
