They're underrated because the only way they could get a record deal was with the caveat of their first album considering solely of songs composed and produced by industry people, and the result is glossy guitar pop, not unlike Bon Jovi that most true metalheads have generally shunned. It was the wrong sound for the wrong audience. If the record company had trusted the band to do what they wanted their way, and the label people just focused on promoting the music, they would've at least sold well to fans of stuff like Skid Row and Poison. Their true metal colors are able to shine through a bit more clearly on their second record.

I'm almost 43 as and still love Vixen! I started listening to them in 1988 when they put their amazing debut out. It got heavy rotation on MTV then, when MTV was still MTV. They got so popular so fast that they were invited to play at MTV's Spring Break in Florida in 1989, and invited on countless shows. People couldn't believe they were as good as they were, but they were the real deal. ... To think, that young, unknown band in the 1984 Hardbodies movie would go on to be one of most successful female bands of all time!
Vixen actually played in the movie "Hardbodies". In fact, they did most of the soundtrack. This was before they hit it big. I think that movie came out in '84. Great movie.
I missed them very much and they leave mark on me to listen songs and watch movies from that time I don't recognize this time in which unfortetanly we living
They should've been bigger than they were! So sad what the music industry does to people - not to mention all the fighting between band members. RIP Jan ❤❤
Looking back on the 80's, I'll never understand why Vixen weren't more popular? Great songs, musicianship, and gorgeous women! Who doesn't like that? Plus, Janet Gardner was an outstanding singer. She could hold her own against some of the best female singers of the time plus she had the looks to add to her appeal. I am shocked the record companies never offered her a solo record deal? Crazy, crazy!! Are those record execs both blind AND deaf? Disgrazia!
Apparently there was factionalism in the band, which lead to the break up. Gardner then got married and had a child and she decided being a mother was more important so respect to her for that.
Growing up back then, I can say, honestly, it was hard for women in metal to be taken seriously. Yeah, you had acts like Lita Ford, Vixen, Doro from Warlock, Wendy O Williams and a few others but none of them really made it HUGE. Women and non whites were, sad to say, more like novelty acts. When bands like Living Color or Loudness etc came out it was like wow that black/Japanese guy can play great. Sad, but true, it was mostly the white guys club back then.
Ah, god. This is bittersweet. I miss this era so much. Perfect solo for a song called cryin. I just wish it was longer. The solo could could have went another 8 bars or even longer, that tone sounded really good.

@James Spun , this stuff was just as real. I was in a hair metal band back in the day, and we cut our teeth on everything from punk to really heavy stuff. We had a male lead , then a female and male duo, then only a female ( she could cover anyone without missing a lick, huge range ), then we wound up with an equally incredible male vocalist. By the time the personnel changes were through, the genre was about dead. I left for a second bout of college and a marriage, and the band cut another album, but there were no real sales. Nobody wanted hair metal anymore. That didn't make the music any less real, and didn't take away any skills from the excellent musicians I was blessed enough to play with. I was the weak link in the lineup when I was in it as the synth player, and they wound up with a better musician. The band reformed after being asked to do so for a local festival for fans, and then went to play the NASCAR race at Bristol a month later. I couldn't gig with them, due to my health, but, they were tight as hell still after only about a month's practice, playing mostly covers, Skid Row, Judas Priest, Van Halen / Hagar, Dokken etc. It was a great show even as an audience member and my teenage son, who was still in the womb the last time I was in the band, was absolutely astonished at how tight they were. There were thousands of musicians and bands that were as good or better than anything you've ever heard on the radio that never got big for different reasons. You can look at most successful artists and see that they've been in a lot of bands before they broke big, and listen to those bands and they sounded fantastic. Any music is real if the musician's heart and soul is in it, and I can tell you, that the hair metal scene had a hell of a lot of that. It was real. I don't denigrate any genre of music. There's great and talented musicians in all of it, and in all of it, there are performers that give their heart and soul to the music and to their fans. The only thing that is crap, and that isn't "real", is the critic who's never laid his ass on the line in front of a small crowd in a crappy , smokey bar full of drunks, or few thousand or a few tens of thousands of people. These girls were real. They were all very talented, and top players. Pia, the bassist, even graduated from Berklee and was a classmate and friend of Aimme Mann's. Pia is Pia Vai, Steve Vai's wife, and has played on his recordings.
The 80's were the best, and I didn't realize it then. I started grade 8 high school in the fall of '79, and by mid summer' 86 I was working in my first career (went for 27 years). The economy was booming, hair was big, pants were tight, and metal ruled the rock scene. Keep rockin' brothers and sisters! 🤘😎
Como eu queria ter sido jovem na década de 80! Se eu tivesse oportunidade de usar uma máquina do tempo com certeza iria dar uma voltinha nessa época kkkk bom demais!
Unfortunately, they started very late, about 1988. They had a few hits, but before they could make it big, the grunge music scene shut down talented acts such as theirs.
@@markymark0417 lol you can't blame a genre for shutting down a musician that's total B.S, a LOT of bands evolved through MANY different decades of different popular genres. Of course you have to have persistence, drive, determination, and talent if you want to evolve as a band through different genres, let's not forget grunge died too as a genre but just because grunge eventually died doesn't mean ALL those bands just stopped making music because grunge wasn't mainstream anymore.
thank you ladies. this album got me through some of the toughest times in my life ,but also went along with some of the best. this album will forever be at the top of my list. only wish there were more like it

For me, Jan Kuehnemund will always be the most beautiful and one of the most talented woman in music. So sad she suffered cáncer and passed away.
Damn, I wasn't born until 1986, I seriously absolutely love the 80's music. I should have lived through this Era. Bring it back Please!!
I'm going to see Vixen at Summerfest in Milwaukee this weekend!
Absolutely loved Jan! She could jam that guitar
Miss these years
These women were freaking talented and beautiful 😍 they certainly didn't get the recognition they Very well deserved.
Their talent is worth in excess of $1B dollars.
Hey, if you like Vixen and this kind of 80's rock, you should really check out the new video by Chez Kane. ruclips.net/video/FIqSK4K-ki8/видео.html
These amazing musicians redefined music for us all !
Como eu queria ter sido jovem na década de 80! Se eu tivesse oportunidade de usar uma máquina do tempo com certeza iria dar uma voltinha nessa época kkkk bom demais!
These girls were the real deal. Pure talent
I wish it was 1989 again, Id have no problem doing my hair like this again. Miss those aqua net days
Beautiful women awesome music great times, we who lived in the 80's had great lives. Wish it was the 80's all over again
Stumbled across this group by accident..now am binge listening to them....❤...
It disappointed me that they didn't get to be as big as Bon Jovi, Guns n' Roses or other great 80s band. They definitely were underrated.
or joan jett
Como elas estão hoje?
@@ddeninhojoviold.
Of course you have to have persistence, drive, determination, and talent if you want to evolve as a band through different genres, let's not forget grunge died too as a genre but just because grunge eventually died doesn't mean ALL those bands just stopped making music because grunge wasn't mainstream anymore.
thank you ladies.
this album got me through some of the toughest times in my life ,but also went along with some of the best.
this album will forever be at the top of my list. only wish there were more like it
Man I miss the 80’s!! Look at that hair!! I wanna go back to the 80’s so bad, so glad I grew up in the 80’s
