I've been using acetone with a grip removal tool for years in removing golf grips without destroying them. Sometime, it wasn't easy! This time was the worse in trying to remove a paddle board putting grip. I could not get it to budge. I came across your video recommendation to use grip solvent which I did and it couldn't have been easier. After 25 years of struggling, I have now found a new method of removing golf grips! Many thanks to you, sir!!!!!
I ordered one of those grip removal tools off of Amazon while I was trying to pull grips off of the shaft by using my air compressor. There was a grip that was stubborn and I thought at the time this grip tool would work wonderfully. Except moments later I pulled the grip off nice and clean using air. I've got a few more grip changes so I might need the tool as a backup since removing grips using air is my preferred method.
I just this minute did this, so easy, I have the proper tool as I was given all the golf club making equipment that a cousin was going to dump, proper vices and measuring equipment. It’s all old stuff in regards to the heads but very useful. I have re gripped clubs but only cutting old ones off, cheers 🙂
Best golf club repair tip channel on RUclips! I like to put the club in a vice vertically with the handle down and move the removal tool around the grip. Have a drip pan underneath to catch solvent. Try your best to have the removal tool over the grip tape when first slide into the grip. Always love your videos and keep the great content coming!
I've done both methods of grip removal, bent coat hanger & $25 GolfWorks tool. The GolfWorks tool is so much faster. Recently switched all of my grips, GolfPride TV +4 mids, Driver down to PW, midsize TourVelvets on my wedges. For removal I put a folded rag inside a 2 gal. bucket on the floor, a bit more leverage for the longer clubs.
For those of you without a compressor, I purchased a meat marinating needle from Amazon for $12. I inject grip solvent down into the grip before inserting the removal tool and it works like a charm! Not sure why I thought of it, but it works!!
That was great advice as I am just going to start re-gripping my clubs by myself, didn't think about the hairdryer or the, turning the shaft motion, thank you.
Great vid, simple technique. Sad to think that 2-3 grips really is pushing $25 USD these days! I remember as a kid getting Golf Pride "Victory Grips" for 89 cents each and re-gripped 1-2 times per year.
I've got an older grip removal tool with a wooden handle that I bought from Golfsmith back in the 1990s, and I've been using this method to remove grips that I've wanted to keep, but I've had to do it in the kitchen sink. I like the paper towel method, think I'll try it next time.
Good stuff, thx. You’re good dude. Recently acquired several sets of clubs with OG leather grips. I know cra cra… Some in good shape just dry. Do you have any Ideas tricks of trade to restore/save all leather grips? Wilson staff & Top Flite, I love blades ✌️out
I’ve switched to using a compressor to put grips on. I even stopped charging one of my friends to change his grips bc it’s just too easy. He came by the other day and one at three grips put on. It took less than five minutes and that included getting everything set up. If I get a new club I’ll put on the type of grip I like. Depending on the type of grip I may decide that my time is more valuable than the grip.
Great video! Used this technique removing my grips, worked out well. Instead of the special grip removing tool I found an old barbecuing long handled spatula laying around to use. By removing the spatula flat part all was left was a small flat landing with rivet holes. Filing the hard edges to give it a hopefully non scratching end. Also bent the handle side bar to off set it away from the golf shaft.
Thanks , have bladed for years, but not heated them before removal, just heated the tape after making easy to scrape off the shaft. Will now heat before also.
Thank you. The trick is to spin it around. I have the similar remover but still had a hard time removing the grip because I just kept shoving it down instead of spinning it.
I made a rod using a 3mm round wire rounded the end make sure it reaches the total grip length and a small "T" bar handle work it in (use a small screw driver to open the grip) poured white spirt in (using a turkey baster) my technique was twist the head of the club working the wire in give it plenty of spirt when the wire is fully down pull it out and the grip pulls off!
Have 2 shafts. I'm cutting down my older steel driver shaft to experiment. Cutting it from 45 to 42.5 inches and adding 14g to the head with a jumbo max grip. But I'm getting anxious before the new grip comes in and want to go ahead with the process. Going short heavy regular flex steel shaft and a long light graphite stiff flex. I retired the regular about a year ago was too long. But I don't want to go cutting around on the graphite shaft. I'm hoping a little more weight shortened will be good for keeping me in the fairway. I average 275 off the tee. But even if my numbers drop to 260 with it I'd be happy
A long thin flathead screwdriver & rubbing alcohol pretty much does it. I always use air compressor and usually remove tape altogether. Haven’t used tape in 20 years!
Interesting!!! I will have to try this. I started blowing grips on a few years ago to be able to switch grips easily. Not using solvent or tape. Works well for shorter clubs but grips move a bit on longer ones.
I’ve used a wire hanger for the last 3 or 4 years and it finally broke! I’m definitely getting one of these for it’s benefit of being more rigid. The wire hanger definitely bent a handful of tomes and caused some headache, so this seems well worth the buy! Love your videos! 🤙
Great video. Think I'll try it but with an old small Tupperware bowl instead of a paper towel to save the solvent as long as it doesn't slide off the bench... Yes I'm cheap.
I completely concur with the removal tool, I made one from wire hanger it worked but it's nothing like the real deal, now here's my question I also have a tape scraper for graphite shafts now exactly how does one sharpen that bad boy! thanks in case you answer or do a tutorial .. enjoy your content.
Hmmm....I did just learn something. I do the air compressor method, and it usually does the trick. However, I never thought of heating the grip. I bet that will help with the stubborn one.
I use a 20 gauge shot gun bore cleaning brush. Pulls all of the old tape out if there is any left inside of a .60 grip. 20 gauge has an outside diameter of .615. I switched to a .410 gauge for a .58 grip. It a little to small but it still works.
Bingo! I was actually thinking about the wire hosel cleaning tool I use which is only 3-4 inches long and wondering about a wire brush that is a foot long. Thank you.
You can get that tool at harbor freight too, you would just have the sand the edges and put and little belt by the handle, it's the windshield removal tool 👍
I have a gripping station and use the hooked knife to get the grip off. Its quicker BUT I think I will use the heat gun you have suggested which makes a whole lot of sense, first. So thanks for the tip. PS This is only half of the equation. You probably should have shown the viewers how to install the new grip too.
@@EFGMC Big thanks and will check this out. I have been doing this for a long time . The one thing that I would really like is an air compressor to blow the grips on and off but thats way too expensive. Again, Thanks.
I use a hacksaw blade to remove residue and smaller pieces of tape that I fumbled while removing the grip. It works the best in my opinion. I haven't tried a longer bolt tho. Yet but I will
I have tried this method and I cannot get the removal tool very deep (1-1 1/2”) and the grip tears. They are Lamkin Crossline grips I put on about one year ago. Are they tearing because they are inexpensive or my technique? I use plenty of mineral spirits but only going 1” I have barely gotten started. Any suggestions?
Hi! I just changed my grip a month ago. Put a new one with double tape. I now need to switch grip again wirh this method. Do you think I can use the tape that is already on there (only a month old) or do I need to retape it?
Just curious. I just regripped my 5-PW with CPX (midsize) grips. I like them alot so far. My question is should I put the CPX grips on my gap, sand, and lob wedge as well? I have tour velvet (standard) on those wedges. Am I just playing mind games with myself telling myself I hit the wedges better with standard tour velvets, or should you always put the same grips on all your clubs? Thanks.
This is the method I use for removing grips. Keep the rag or paper towel handy for when you re-grip to catch the excess solvent from running down the shaft and onto the grip.
If you have a stationary tub to use, place the butt end of grip in and spin it inside the drain slot while using grip tool. This way there’s no mess and the grip won’t slide out.
Hi AJ. For some reason I can’t send you a message on the elite fit golf website, so I’ll ask my question here……what is the best/most adequate build tape to use for gripping clubs. I’ll be re-gripping my set on the weekend for the first time (using compressed air) and want to build up the grips. Thanks for your help. And thanks for the RUclips content. @@EFGMC Yes, I put a long shaft extension in the putter to try it out. When I took the grip off, the extension came off also and stayed inside the grip.
I still find a syringe and thinners works easy, just inject in a few spots and then twist the grip off with no tearing or stretching and no damage to the shaft.
My problem is that the tip of the tool can sometimes dig down and lift sections of the tape. This has the potential for problems if the tape isn’t removed and actually removing 5he rape if you go that route. A hacksaw blade works great for getting tape residue out of the grip -- the small teeth grab the tape without damaging the inside of the grip
