In 1979 I was in 7th grade. Me and my best friend Rich loved Devo. We made a video of us lip syncing Devo songs in complete yellow jumpsuit with black belts and swimming goggles. Other kids thought we were nuts. I’d say we were ahead of our time. I still have that video.
I was around the same age when I discovered them, too. None of my friends really understood the appeal. I was hooked instantly, though. Saved up and bought the LPs, then started tape trading a year or two after that and collecting Devo shows, and the rest is history... still blows my mind sometimes that they were making music this dangerous and ahead of its time in the mid-70s, a period of utter musical ennui for the most part.
Alan Myers Jr was one of the greatest drummers of his generation!!! Gerald and I had a great and fairly detailed/lengthy convo about how great he was. Casale has palyed with some of the all-time most legendary and respected drummers around and....he says that Alan was easily the best he's ever played with. His playing throughout his time in DEVO was a masterclass
This is the Devo only a handful of us knew and loved . People used to laugh at us and Utter WE ARE DEVO. Then when WHip It played on mtv these same fools were devo fans they thought.Just like early b52s and loveshack many missed the real energy and fun of both bands.
DEVO!!! man this shit rocks, Devo is, was, and always will be the tits, this is my favorite song by them, personally think its one of the best songs ever written.
Had a hankerin' to hear this song, and this is the clip I watched. I am sooooooo happy I did. I saw DEVO in 1980 at age 13. This brought back so many good memories. That band was far ahead of their time and happily still measured up as one of the best bands ever.
@darthfrodo44 I saw them once around this time - a free concert at the University of Florida in Gainesville and they were great. One thing that rarely gets mentioned about Devo is their musicianship. Strip all the visuals, special effects, etc. away and they were a terrific rock band.
Absolutely! They were a great unit. I think the Human Metronome, drummer Alan Myers, was their secret weapon for a long time, until the computers took over his role completely. Great band.
Agreed! You know the Starwood owner was? Eddie (Nash) Nasrallah, who had John (ny Wadd) Holmes and cohorts commit the Wonderland (see Val Kilmer film) murders. Nash sold me my tickets from his office the afternoon they went on sale.
That vid is the DB's. Was into DEVO from their earliest vids but remember seeing this on Old Grey Whistle Test in UK, recording it in VHS and wearing out the player from watching it so many times. Fantastic!
i'll never forget playing this cut in my car for a friend around 1980 or so when it first came out.. he'd never heard of DEVO, and when the track was finished he sat there for a couple of moments, then said: "Wow, they'd be great if they didn't suck."
And they always opened for themselves. Sometimes they had DOVE. The only time I saw an actual other band was New Year's Eve 1981 at the Long Beach Arena when they had X as well.

You should post that video

All you drummers ... jump in with both feet and drive that bus !!
Respect where respect is due !
Thank you Alen.

I cant stop watching these video's....these guys were pretty tight..

To quote Devo 'the beginning of the end', that was true for Whip It and for the B-52's 'Loveshack'. Worst thing(s) to happen.

i was there! got the poster still! 1st time we met them actually! Great show!

bob mothersbaugh is one of the greatest guitarists ever.
I think Bob Casale is the one who played the solo.
Nope. Bob 1 all the way.
YES. And he puts so much energy into it. Bob 1 is my fav member of Devo for sure.
@@ExiledStardust Bob 1, (Marc's bro) always had that angry look.
greatest live video i've seen of them. Bob 1's solo at 2:27 is ridiculously intense. I love Devo in the bike helmet short short phase the best haha.
Loved the 'Duty Now' skateboard look they carried over into.
Thanks gadgetman2000 for posting this excellent early Devo video. I like how they perfectly captured the early 1960s Cuban Missile Crisis aesthetics.
Wow, first time I've seen this played live back in the day. These guys could smash it live.
oh yeah nice! this is still the best devo video i've ever seen, absolutely brilliant
At 3.09 Alan takes off the hat and the glasses and you know that it gonna be real pandemonium
Alan was a goddamned machine! had a clock for a heart.
I know that they were that under-rated..they were always so closely tied to nerds or whatever.I fucking love em.
I'll take that guitar over ANYTHING Nugent, Page, Van Halen, or Clapton ever did. Fucking genius!
I agree! 👍👍👍
The world's most *_underrated band._*
It's absurd how good they are and have flown under the wire outside of whip it
This is great quality! At around 3:08 you see Alan taking of his helmet...Then his dark glasses. XD.
I'm so happy they're creating more music! :D
Yeah funny thing about devo when u heard them the first time u either thought wow this is the greatest thing ever or man this sucks.
R.I.P. Alan and Bob. The Starwood shows were the greatest, before the sequencers and keyboards took over.

@@joeibarnes9206 Yeah, the entire Starwood, and other venues ownership and management is a movie unto itself.
Rockin out harder than all those metal nerds

That's tremendous 🥰🤣

Wall of Voodoo opened for them at the ill-fated 3-Devo show
They were so unprofessionally professional.
does anyone know the name of this live show,or better yet know where a spud boy can acquire said live show on a hard copy?
backsmith fakie its from DEVO: The Men Who Make The Music
common stock, we work around the clock
Good One!
holy shart shorts.......... nice
@Backup218 Exactly... 2 of the best live bands I have ever seen...
FANTASTIC! SUBLIME!MIRABILIS!MERVEILLOS!WUNDERLICH!
Devo is one of those bands just sounds better live.
Fore sure.
Great footage, music picks up well with "Mr. DNA." They lost some of this energy on later LPs.
epic
Can some please tell what the quotes are in the beginning??? I cant make out most of them!
