Huzzah! This video was desperately needed! I think I speak for many others out there when I say I think eyes are perhaps one of the trickiest things for puppet builders, mainly because so many of them don't even know what to use or what works. I personally have, embarrassingly, used cardboard eyes a lot in the past, but I know others out there have used such things as plastic spoons, sheets of craft foam, and even remnants of Christmas ornaments. Adam, you are truly a savant - I wish video tutorials like these existed when I started out over ten years ago, but RUclips wasn't even a thing then, and while resources for puppet building were available, they weren't really informative or comprehensive.
Those measuring spoons are the missing link! I love that they're all the right size. THANK YOU! I've been thinking of starting to mold eyes, and that just made my day.
Extremely informative... Thank you for posting your series... We've been following your tips in my after school grade 6 workshop and we've got some puppets being made... Awesome job!
This is super. There's several videos I've watched for making eyes and this one, by far, is the best. Simple, straight forward and thorough! Looking forward to seeing him all put together.
Just some advice on pouring silicone- stand on a chair and pour it from high. Try to pour it using with a thin stream as well- cuts down on air bubbles that potentially happen. I also tap the sides of the mold to release air bubbles. Great tutorial btw and keep it up! Thx
Used your links to buy materials today, so I guess it's official... I'm making my first puppet! I've watched all your tutorials and I'm so excited to try my hand at this. I'll tag you on Instagram when it's done!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. I know this comment is very late, but I just want to add that the Smooth Cast 300 (and most urethane resins) are extremely hazardous to your health and require adequate ventilation as a bare minimum. Respirators with organic vapor cartridges are usually recommended...although the urethane contains isocyanates that aren't even stopped by most respirator cartridges. The chemical reaction of it curing can be fun to watch but you shouldn't stand over your molds watching. Not trying to say you did anything wrong in the video, just thought someone should point this out to those who don't know. I love the whole video series you did.
Great job with the spoons but to make it even simpler just pour the casting material into the spoon. a little mold release and it will pop right out of the spoon :)
I take puppetry and I have to do this, but it might be a little problem becuase ill need to do this at school, and most likely I dont have access or cant buy and bring these tools, so I was wondering if I can buy the finished product of casting so ill just have to add fabric and stuff, same with the puppet head. Plz respond as quick as you can, also love your vids keep the grate work up.
Great video; I tried using measuring spoons to make a Sculpey mold, but didn't cut the handle off - I think I will, so it doesn't leave an indent on the mold's edge. Question: can you use this process to make fully round eyeballs? If you do two molds of the half-globes, when you glue them together does it make a perfect sphere? I need full-globe eyes for a side-to-side puppet eye mechanism.
Hey Adam! Another great video. I didn't see anything about how to attach the eyes to the head. What type of glue do you use? I made my head based on your "How to make a puppet and pattern from scratch!" video so it is covered in fur.
Hey Adam, I made a mold using oomoo 30 and I unfortunately didn't use enough (It covered the mold but there wasn't enough for the right level of thickness on the bottom) Can I pour more omoo 30 over already cured oomoo 30 and have them bond or should I start from scratch?
+Ben Burris: Yes, silicone chemically bonds to silicone. Sooner the better. After a week or so there might be more chance for a failure. But it should still work.
I have a question: we're making puppets in my highschool for my creative arts class, and so we don't have a ton of budget for things like silicone and resin, but I still want a solid eye that'll last a while. if the main problem is surface area, could I potentially use a ping pong ball and then fill it with hot glue?
Adam I want to become a puppeteer and make my own puppets so I’m asking all my questions to you because you are a professional:). I use puppet pelts for fleece and fur but I have trouble deciding which is better so when I get my workshop done do you think it would be good if I bought the swatch collection, it has samples of all the fur and fleece, the felt, the size of the eyes, etc.
I'm wondering if you make and sell your puppet eyes through Etsy/eBay? I'm in the process of making a puppet for a friend but don't necessarily want to make the entire mold. Or maybe you know of someone who makes them the same way as you do that sells them if you do not? Thanks!!
These videos are sooo amazing! Thank you! If we didn't/couldn't do this casting process; is there anywhere that you sell these eyeballs? 'Cause that would be sooo awesome! :D
Thank you so mcuh for these videos!!! You could creat like a subreddit or a community so we can all post our puppets so you can take a look and give us advice!!! Big Hug!!!
You've got some really "industrial" techniques. Where did you learn this stuff? I've been making my own puppets for about 5 years, now. I've studied a LOT of RUclips videos, but never seen Mold Making or Vacuum Forming on here!
i have a colege project and i have to do a puppet theater and a puppet and i had to pick a themeso i choosed moana, and i am going to have to a puppet of her, how do i do her, like can use those tecnics?
Yeah, now that I really think about it, you didn't actually need gloves (edit) I think you meant "I would lose the precision I would've needed if I had gloves for that" also if you added the word 'situation' at the end of the sentence it could have been a lot more understandable
If you can’t afford all this stuff which is definitely a good investment, puppet pelts sells eyes and the pupils come unattached so you can change your eye focus
Smaller moulds, you can make out of (Lego/MegaBlox) blocks. Helps out in a pinch if you're going quick and dirty for a small peice.... .... as always any form has the chance of leaking so make sure not to your work where a leak will be a problem.... the wife/husband will complain... or the royal feline commander of the household will complain ;). Any sort of mould making. Assume the form will leak. ;p
Omg dude you are awesome the best thanks for this , but you waste too much supplies like the fabrics , papers , silicone , it’s too muchhhh I mean you can do the same with half of the material of supplies , it’s too expensive those things where I come from , and I’m into art direction , toys stop motion and now I want this , and mesure and save everything that I bought for this , anyway you are the best and thanx ,, just use trim the pattern on the fabric not in the center of the fabric , i mean then the rest is useless , the remaining fabric , damn , any way thanks and I’m already a fan
Thanks! Like most businesses I try to focus on the final product. That is first priority. I salvage as much as I can, but sometimes I have to cut my losses for time.
That was such a waste of silicone. It could have been thinnerin height, and had so much of that dead area in the sides eliminated. Ouch, my wallet is crying. XP
A minimal investment to make the perfect tool that I will last a lifetime. It was a lot of silicone. But it was only a half inch over the tallest dome. Which is the recommended wall thickness for molds. That being said, it was much thicker over the smaller domes, which is where that “waste” is. I would have had to mold each set separately, which is not what I wanted to do.
Adam Kreutinger - I have... a 1/16" thick silicone glove mold for a mask that has lasted me over three years and I still can't get it to tear without excessive force. I'm saying that was excessive... From the perspective of someone who makes molds. While I wouldn't suggest most people bother going through the added effort, you could have made a brush-on mold with thivex and then poured a gypsum, cement, or plaster backing on top of that and come out with a mold that would have lasted as long as a low-stress application like this is going to endure, while being easier to demold since you can just pop the mold inside out to pop the eyes out (Actually how I do my eye molds) Not saying that everyone has to do everything my way, of course, just that... It makes my wallet shudder in pain. :P
I’m still not sure what you are referencing. If you could be more specific I’m sure I could clarify for you. You might be using the wrong spray adhesive in the wrong way.
Loving the 'I'd like to keep it on please' quote!!!! Yes Gwad!
Huzzah! This video was desperately needed! I came here for puppet making, and also got a Valentina reference! I'M LIVING!!
WERK!!!!
+patman williamson: Thanks!
This was a very satisfying process to watch.
Lindy Design Lab yes
These tutorials you're making are fantastic! Thanks so much!!
This is super. There's several videos I've watched for making eyes and this one, by far, is the best. Simple, straight forward and thorough! Looking forward to seeing him all put together.
OH MY GOSH ive needed this video for 2 years now... THANK YOU
Thanks for sharing your expertise. Awesome!
Just some advice on pouring silicone- stand on a chair and pour it from high. Try to pour it using with a thin stream as well- cuts down on air bubbles that potentially happen. I also tap the sides of the mold to release air bubbles. Great tutorial btw and keep it up! Thx
I am building a puppet and your videos are sooooo helpful. I printed out your patterns and they are perfect!
Awesome! Thanks!
Used your links to buy materials today, so I guess it's official... I'm making my first puppet! I've watched all your tutorials and I'm so excited to try my hand at this. I'll tag you on Instagram when it's done!
Thanks! Can’t wait to see what you come up with!!
Thank You So Much I Am Also A Puppeteer And This Helped Me A Lot!!!
Love Your Videos!!
What paint do you use on the eyes?
Great video. Thanks for sharing. Thanks! I bring this up all the time in my live streams. I just had a better ventilation system put in myself.
0:58 Is that a Ru pauls drag race reference hahah
😂😂 I think you are only the second person to get that reference.
"I'd like to keep it on please" :D
Haha. You caught that!
Great job with the spoons but to make it even simpler just pour the casting material into the spoon. a little mold release and it will pop right out of the spoon :)
Spoons work well. But I’m not a fan of them. They look too much like what they are.
I take puppetry and I have to do this, but it might be a little problem becuase ill need to do this at school, and most likely I dont have access or cant buy and bring these tools, so I was wondering if I can buy the finished product of casting so ill just have to add fabric and stuff, same with the puppet head. Using measure spoons for eyes...you are a genius!
Hey Adam! Another great video. I didn't see anything about how to attach the eyes to the head. What type of glue do you use? I made my head based on your "How to make a puppet and pattern from scratch!" video so it is covered in fur.
+Daniel Goodman: I use contact cement.
You are the best. You have helped me so much i am really enjoying making this sweet creatures, i hope some day ill be as good as you
Is there a video on doing puppet glasses that I'm missing! I'd love to view that one!
Where did you get those awesome goggles??
Is there maybe a 3d model for those with resin printers for eyes? I love the tutorials and am about to start my puppet making hobby.
I’ve seen countless assemblies on thingiverse for puppet eyes that move and blink, I’d bet someone has ones like these on there too
"I'd like to keep it on please." I see what you did there, Kreutinger.
jakebazel
Christophe Albertini jakebazel
Is this a Valentina reference???? Hahahha
Thank you for the video it really helped me out and I think a lot of people
I would like to know where you got you're goggles
Hey Adam. Roughly how many 1 -1/2" eyes (sets of two) can a person make with the two pint $30.00 Smooth-Cast 300 plastic in the link?
I'm not sure. I would guess 10 sets. I'll try to get back to you when I finish the bottle.
You don't need to get back with me on it. I was just looking for a rough guess. Thanks man.
Hey Adam, I made a mold using oomoo 30 and I unfortunately didn't use enough (It covered the mold but there wasn't enough for the right level of thickness on the bottom) Can I pour more omoo 30 over already cured oomoo 30 and have them bond or should I start from scratch?

I would recommend trying a wooden dome.
i love puppetry.its a passion now.i want make big flowers characters
WOW they are very realistic
Is there anyplace to purchase puppet eyes?
Hi Adam. Have you ever used plaster of Paris to cast eyes?
No. And I would not recommend it. Might be fine for a mold depending on what you are casting. But not good for the eyes themselves.
Can you please tell me what you use to make the base and sides for the mold? Thanks
Foam core. Cardboard will work too.
@@PuppetNerd thank you
What material are you using to make the walls of the mold? Is that styrofoam?
Foam core or cardboard.
Adam I want to become a puppeteer and make my own puppets so I’m asking all my questions to you because you are a professional:). They can be handy.

Are you willing to be able to sell a set of eyes or do you know where I could find them if I'm not able to make them?
These videos are sooo amazing! Thank you! If we didn't/couldn't do this casting process; is there anywhere that you sell these eyeballs? 'Cause that would be sooo awesome! :D
Adam you are 100% pure awesome sauce BUT... I want those goggles. Where on the net do find goggles like those you wear in the video. Tahnks again
Thank you so mcuh for these videos!!! You could creat like a subreddit or a community so we can all post our puppets so you can take a look and give us advice!!! Big Hug!!!
i just want now how to make a hand puppet/gloved arm puppet
*like cookie monster
a puppet in which only do you not control the head, but also the hands and fingers by putting your hand inside the puppet
Great videos man! We love all the vids man keep them coming!!! :))))
can you use felt for the skin
That was satisfying
It’s a fun process!!
You've got some really "industrial" techniques. Where did you learn this stuff? I've been making my own puppets for about 5 years, now. I've studied a LOT of RUclips videos, but never seen Mold Making or Vacuum Forming on here!
Hi adam can I use smooth cast 320 ??
Just looked it up. I think it will work fine.
Thank you 😊
I was curious if mold release was necessary?
It’s never a bad idea. But these are so small abs smooth it isn’t necessary.
Thanks! These tutorials are amazing!
Why did you sand and paint the measuring spoons if they were being used for the mold and not for the eyes themselves?
That process gives the eyes a matte finish.
Can pigment clear resin white
I all ready made blue eye shadow for the puppet
You also need some silicone mold and liquid plastic.
Can you make eyes with fabric like you do with the noses?
Give it a try!
Adam Kreutinger ok! Thanks for responding😁
i have a colege project and i have to do a puppet theater and a puppet and i had to pick a themeso i choosed moana, and i am going to have to a puppet of her, how do i do her, like can use those tecnics?
Thank you!!!
Happy to help!
Can you make a video how to make a live hand action puppet
Holy crap! Did you just make a Valentina reference?!
Lol❤️❤️❤️ Sure did.
I have almost the exact goggles!
I am going to use polymer clay!
I love this tutorial... I have wondered how to make holds before! Thank you for another very informative video!
0:56 is goggles, 0:58 is the mask, 1:00, though nothing for your hands
I would loose the precision I would needed if I had gloves for that. I mostly use gloves when I use chemicals.
Yeah, now that I really think about it, you didn't actually need gloves
(edit) I think you meant "I would lose the precision I would've needed if I had gloves for that" also if you added the word 'situation' at the end of the sentence it could have been a lot more understandable
I’d agree with you if we were talking about multiple things. There is only one specific topic at hand here.
I want to make a Rick Sanchez puppet from Rick and Morty but I can't make a good head pattern for his oval head! Please help!
+GameMode: FuckLife. You can use this video to make a pattern of any shape you can sculpt. ruclips.net/video/2CJ7pdF3I-s/видео.html
If you can’t afford all this stuff which is definitely a good investment, puppet pelts sells eyes and the pupils come unattached so you can change your eye focus
You could 3D print the eyes!
Fantastic Video! Now I wanna build a puppet! you really inspired me! 😊😄
1:32 you look so cool
❤️❤️❤️

you should write cost as well
Can yo do it a day close to today
Sorry. I’m not sure what you are asking.
I cut in half a a nerf rival bullet then paint it and stick them on
❤️❤️
You wasted so much of that silicone! But still this video is awesome!
+tokagehideto: haha. I realized that as I was pouring. Totally would have done it a little different if I could go back. But it still works perfect.
I accidentally got spoons with a lip on them so I made a mold of the inside without the lip then did the rest of the process that way
Can you make a realistic chucky doll a bride of chucky with the hair and the real clothing and shoes.
I think I might just buy silicone molds instead
You can. But it’s limiting. Depends on what you are trying to do.
Adam Kreutinger makes sense but I’m getting one with a bunch of different sizes and they’re in pairs
Please show us how to make a pig puppet😬I subscribed turned on post notifications and liked your videos☹️

rick lyon vs. adam kreutinger
Dude, I'm only 12, and I just got into puppets. Since I am this young, what is a way I can make a puppet without a bunch of "High-tech" stuff?
looks so funny messy creations
Cook muffin cakes to us with silicone mold :)
Haha.

+U N K N O W N: You did!
Wait a second if it was 24 hours why then why are you wearing the same clothes 😱😱
I plan this stuff out. ;)
juan medina Have you never even heard of someone wearing the same clothes two days in a row?
The power of a washing machine
Spray adhesive was a terrible idea.
What are you referencing?
Adam Kreutinger think I commented on the wrong video. It was very helpful with the exception of the spray adhesive thing.
I’m still not sure what you are referencing. If you could be more specific I’m sure I could clarify for you. You might be using the wrong spray adhesive in the wrong way.
