    Let’s Build Blinking Puppet Eyes - part 1
    In this video I show how to make a silicone mold from acrylic spheres and then cast them in resin as part of the first step to making these eye mechs.

    This is awesome! I also appreciate you mentioning the fact that a lot of art and art materials are single-use and disposable. Surprisingly I haven't heard many artists talk about it, but it's something I think about with every project I work on, and I can't help but feel a little guilty sometimes. That said, it's good to see another artist who's so dedicated to reusing what they can and minimizing waste :)

    I love the video. I saw another video about making eyes, but it would only let the eyes move. It wouldn’t let them blink though, but this one can do both. I’ll make sure to try this When I’m making a puppet.

    This is awesome. Seen the process before, but now that you told me not only how long it takes and where to get everything to Make the new eyes. Not just the molds, I'm convinced. I need to start making my own. I'm spending a fortune in time, shipping and work around for eyes that cost more, aren't what I really want, but I cannot get or cannot get any more. I always save one blank or if left and right eye is different, a pair.

    Just a little tip for free hand silicone brushing like the teeth on your extra, first brush the teeth lightly, then with a cotton ball rolled open, so it's thin. Cut a piece of cotton slightly larger than your brushed area, Soak up whats left in in the cup with the cotton piece you've prepared and place it onto the area you've brushed. The matting gives more stability without too much silicone leaking off your work piece. Love your tutorial, very clear to understand.

    What is the brand of hot glue stick you use? I usually avoid hot glue like the plague, but I use zote foam and it sounds interesting.

    • @GeahkBurchill
      @GeahkBurchill  5 лет назад +1

      Here’s a link. I usually get 5/16” in a 5lb box. For my purposes I always use black brown or white but you can see a wide variety of colors. These are still low temp though, so any project you’re doing that needs to survive above 145°f will likely fall apart. I avoid building enclosed mascot heads from zote that I expect will be out in the sun, or left in a hot car. For most other zote projects, this is the BEST glue there is! glu-stix-online.com/collections/glue-sticks/products/colored-hot-melt-glue-sticks?variant=7854515290165

    I’m starting a puppet project and this really helped me. I’m trying to build chamberlain from Jim Henson’s “The Dark Crystal” and I’m coming into some problems. Any tips on realism in the eyes of a puppet?

    • @GeahkBurchill
      @GeahkBurchill  4 года назад +3

      Yes, I’ll be talking about that in the next video in this series, but I cover a bit of it in this one. The most important thing is that the center of the pupil be deep and dark. Having the iris be concaved, and highly detailed it also helpful. Lots of color variation and layering of the paint makes it appear real. And, finally, a very glossy surface to the final eye is critical.

      This is a REALLY good idea for a future video.
      There is an easy way to do this. I build built blinking eyes for Disney’s Finding Nemo which are like that. The way I solved it was to use an extension-spring from one eye to the other and then driving the center of the spring. The two eyes would then follow. Hard to explain in a comment but I will do a future video!
