Enjoyed this immensly. I'm a puppet builder also and am always looking for techniques. We never stop learning. I didn't have any pvc so I cut a white plastic medicine bottle which is a bit easier to cut than using the hard plastic ones. I built my beaks out of craft popsicle sticks. Very clever philip. Thanks
Wow, scrap pieces and hand tools.. amazing... I've just started researching to make next years halloween display using all sorts of servos and pneumatic pistons and you did exactly what I wanted with scraps.. Thank you for sharing, you may just have saved me hundreds of dollars on unnecessary parts
Hace mucho que lo ví,y me sigue gustando tanto la genial simpleza del mecanismo, (aunque no va con lo que hago yo )cómo la generosidad del Señor Artesano que lo enseña. Muchísimas gracias.
Thank you! For a special effects artist such as myself, your video has been invaluable! I can more create an animatronic phoenix. Thank you for doing this!
Mr Stephens, there was no social media when I went through college/film school (not USC), wanted to work in fx but had no opportunities to do so. Thank you for these nuts and bolts videos, they are an awesome education!
You are SUCH a legend. I like your videos and your very easy-going attitude. Thanks for sharing your expertise on here. Wished you lived in my city! :)
Sou sua fã! Você é muito didático. Eu tinha muitas dúvidas em como fazer este tipo de mecanismo, mas suas explicações foram esclarecedoras. Muito obrigada! Mara
thanks a lot!!! I´m a puppetriest from Argentina and I didn`t study anywhere, I manage with recycle things mostly. This tuto was the greatest I ever seen, I`ll apreciatee youre knowledge sharing.
This is so wonderful how you demonstrate. Using the scraps you have around. I re-purpose too. But I'm in love with your pump drill. Love being able to work quietly anywhere any time and not bother others. But anyway, I digress. Wanted to say, thank you for keeping what I tend to over complicate so simple and several options on it. I now know I'll be more confident in trying this out soon and not worrying I'm headed out to buy a box of frustration that will be parts I'll ultimately shelve. Now I feel like even I can do this!
Thanks so much!. It took a bit of experimenting to get it all to work for our specific needs but could not have made our parrot puppet as well as it has come out without your tutorial. Wish I could share our parrot video.
Thank you for sharing your experiments - these are wonderful tutorials :) I'm a kiwi too and hope to one day try this peg and cable mechanism out in my hobby crafts. Your videos are giving me heaps of ideas, I'll need to get some wood and pipe to start :D Will try remember to share anything I create using your tips and tricks
Wonderfully practical video- thanks a bunch. I'm new to puppet making but just finished making a mouth mechanism with a small modification- I attached the hand-lever to the back of the mouth so that I can turn the head of the puppet as well as make it speak. I wanted to post a photo here but it doesn't seem to be possible!
Your hand must have strong skin to be able to use it in place of a saw handle. Puppets were a major part of the TV shows I watched growing up - Gerry Anderson, MST3K, etc.
Thank you so much for this tutorial! I know it’s very old so you might not see this, but if you do I would love some advice, because I keep running into two issues, and I’m a little at lost Basically I can’t seem to get the tension on my bike cable quite right. It’s either too loose and then it struggles to return to it’s starting position or it’s too tight and then the bottom plate flips out. I suspect the bottom plate will somewhat correct itself once I’ve built the puppet mouth cover, since that will give It some more resistance, but I’ve been reluctant to start on that while I’m still fighting my tension issue. Any thoughts you (or your community have) would be massively appreciated!
THANK YOU this is helping me figure what I need to make my dragon puppet for the fair in June! I will be helping hopefully as my persona Silvia a dragon tamer.
I am making a dragon illusion costume and I'd like to make his mouth and neck move, it will, appear that I am riding him. Any suggestions on those areas?
My Mans just raw dogging it with a loose sawzall blade. I love it. This is a great simple cheap solution! Absolute legend
Puppet are one of the most interesting art forms on Earth. So cool!
I was intimidated when I had an idea for a dragon puppet to take to ren fairs but this seems surprisingly doable. Thanks!

Thanks Phil for the video, have you made a video for moving puppets eyes yet?

Could you please try to make a cable controlled eye mechanism next?

This video is fantastic! But a question and this is just my ignorance...but what it the bicycle wire you use for this?
You look like Jim Henson
could you show how to make the puppet with string instead? none of the stores near me have bike cables.
@PhilipStephens007 would you please list your other youtube channels if you have any.
