- Mikhail Nikolaevich Baryshnikov (Russian: Михаи́л Никола́евич Бары́шников; born January 27, 1948),[1] nicknamed "Misha" (Russian diminutive of the name "Mikhail"), is a Russian dancer, choreographer, and actor, often cited alongside Vaslav Nijinsky and Rudolf Nureyev as one of the greatest ballet dancers in history. After a promising start in the Kirov Ballet in Leningrad, he defected to Canada in 1974 for more opportunities in western dance. After freelancing with many companies, he joined the New York City Ballet as a principal dancer to learn George Balanchine's style of movement. He then danced with the American Ballet Theatre, where he later became artistic director.
Baryshnikov has spearheaded many of his own artistic projects and has been associated in particular with promoting modern dance, premiering dozens of new works, including many of his own. His success as a dramatic actor on stage, cinema and television has helped him become probably the most widely recognized contemporary ballet dancer. In 1977, he received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor and a Golden Globe nomination for his work as "Yuri Kopeikine" in the film The Turning Point. Also, he was in the last season of Sex and the City.
He's the only dancer as a classical musician, that dances "in time". He lands on time, he jumps on time.
I saw Baryshikov dance when he was a young man recently defected from the USSR to Canada. He joined the Royal Winnipeg Ballet (my hometown company) and I had season tickets. I had no idea what I was about to see that night, and I sat through the performance with my eyes bugging out and my mouth hanging open. He did things that no human being should be able to do. I feel so blessed to have had that incredible opportunity.
Hi Leslie: FYI - Baryshnikov's sojourn at the Royal Winnipeg Ballet is not included in his entry on Wikipedia. I'm not sure how to do it, but Wiki is open to public input, correction and the like if you want to remedy this oversight.
in Canada, and in the USA at that time, the ballet was much weaker than in the USSR) Baryshnikov was just one of Kirovsky's soloists. The dancers were better than him both in the Bolshoi and the Kirovsky Theater. When Sasha Godunov stayed in the USA, even Baryshnikov was not so impressed even by the American audience. Everything is known in comparison. If there is no comparison and choice, then a good professional dancer might seem like the peak) If Mikhail had not stayed in the WEST, then he would not have been talked about so much in the world or in RUSSIA) 50% of his success is success defector dancer ...

Yes yes yes!!!!!!
Clearly, Baryshnikov still has no rival today, I doubt that he ever will. He becomes the music like no one else. His style is effortless yet super powerful, his technique is flawless, his hang time is almost supernatural, and he is a very expressive performer whose love and joy of dancing is absolutely fascinating.
I can see on the video he was magical and special.
Yes, it's the effortlessness that is so utterly breathtaking, as if for him, dancing is like breathing.
Patrick dupond 78-1983 = Baryschnikov 100-100

He clearly was enjoying himself while amidst his flawless executions; & made his art APPEAR effortless:
THAT...was the real job!

The combination of strength and grace is amazing. Built like a tank, drifting on air.
Not just his exquisite technique and stage presence that impress me but I’ve never seen such perfect control of every movement.
Today they use to dance lot better. Don't forget his length too.
@@nozognocry Which movements and jumps exactly are better today, and in what way?
@@kdiesler oh, come on..
During the slow motion, I was noting how perfectly his feet hit every position.
@@nozognocry Are you sure dancers today dance better? They seem to dance either too fast, too strong or too high. My opinion only. Maybe Calvin Royal III is an exception. He's a lyric dancer who genuinely dances gracefully.
His ability to stop on a dime after these huge moves is simply amazing.
IMO, the best male ballet dancer ever. Not only is he artistic, but his technique is perfection.
i fold. i can’t bring that to the table
I loved taking ballet classes as a child. He is the best!!!
Schaufuss was better than Barryshnikov.
@@RedEyeification no he wasn't but he was pretty amazing, too )
Saw him dance his Elle with makarova around 1980 ar Covent Garden
Whole audience gasped as he leapt up on the famous entrance
No one there had seen anything like it and we were a very good audience
Just breathtaking
Such a Privelige
I saw most of Baryshnikov’s performances in NYC in the 80’s and it was always an amazing spectacle for me. I was and remain a high level gymnastics coach and a 6th dan black belt in karate and Jiu Jitsu brown belt, but I had considered Baryshnikov and Bruce Lee to be the most talented performers alive and I still don’t think they have been surpassed to this day. Watching Baryshnikov display his technical mastery was amazing for me and it gave me a deep and abiding appreciation for the importance of technical execution in order to reach the heights of artistic performance and I carried this as the primary objective ever since while teaching gymnastics, martial arts and to a lesser extent trampoline and some diving teaching experiences where my students ventured into diving from gymnastics or trampoline. And this perspective served me very well. I haven’t seen Baryshnikov performances since that time but watching this video has reawakened my appreciation for his talent and abilities. To me Baryshnikov and Bruce Lee stand out as so far ahead of their time that so far nobody has approached their level of skill as yet. Bravo Misha. Bravo.
This is another footage...

Still the best. His musicality, intellect, his incredible proportions, everything is perfect!
The Golden Girls brought me here Sophia said "no man should wear tights unless he's Baryshnikov"
Shannon Hill … I agree … if my brain were opened, there would be his legs jumping around, keeping my heart beating.
Amen!
Shannon Hill mr young brought me here LOLOL
That's why I came here to search Baryshnikov. I'm in middle of that episode and I just paused it to see. Lol
He is the cutest and the most physically perfect dancer ever! In my opinion neryeve was great but misha is so wonderful, he stands out as the most proficient dancer ever! Gotta love him!
His technical mastery is still unsurpassed.
@sofiamacaroni maybe not perfect technique but you couldn't take your eyes off him.
He was a truly extraordinary dancer!!!!!!!
I saw Misha and He was the most wonderful dancer so far the best of all the time .
The way he moves he doesn’t even look like he’s breaking a sweat. He makes it look that easy. The height he gets is amazing and he’s as light as a feather when he lands
When I was a kid, back in the 80s and 90s, Baryshnikov was the only ballet dancer I knew by name and the most famous in the world at that time. Legend has it that even though he was short for a male dancer, he had the highest jumps. It would be great if old videos of his performances were digitally remastered. The video quality is poor for a good reason - these clips are 35 years old at least. But after all this time, it still stands - he IS one of the greatest ballet dancers of all time.
The longer I live and have watched some of the best companies and dancers around the world, I more I appreciate Baryshnikov’s skill and artistry. Truly exceptional.
you can endlessly watch how the water flows, how the fire burns and how Baryshnikov dances ))
My eyes cannot believe what they see when I watch this man fly. Will there ever be anyone like him???
He has to be the best dancer ever in the world. Imo. Just impeccably beautiful!!
I know nothing about ballet, but man this feels so harmonic, refined, gracious. It's just perfect.
You know that much about ballet!
I saw him first in the 1970's after he defected, the I hit to see him in Giselle with Gelsey Kirkland in the early 80's. There will never be anyone more incredible, and I gave seen many wonderful male dancers. Erik Bruhn also had the most beautiful technique, but Misha had EVERYTHING! So exciting.
This man was born to DANCE .
His poise , his stage presense & his control all added to his magnificent technique - simply take one's breath away.
He has perfected his talent through huge dedication and practice from a very young age.
He makes the impossible - look very easy.
We have to salute his greatest .
Semplicemente grandioso ILPIU grande di tutti!!!! ❤️🇮🇹👋👋👋👋
Grande grande grande
You know, I only came here to catch a glimpse of Baryshnikov because his name is legendary in his craft, and I ended up watching the whole video. I know nothing of ballet, so my opinion means nothing, and the finer points of his skill are lost on me.
Despite this, I am immediately moved to say that he is brilliant. He looks perfect. I can't say why, I don't have the expertise. But the word that comes to mind as I watch him is "perfect."
Had the same experience my friend.
Hi is a God of dance
I'm kind of like you, but you can see his athleticism. With now I had tried it as it would help in other sports
Why you say his name is legendary? Other than in the world or dance ? Or I didnt understand
Same. I know absolutely nothing about dance, and even I can see that he's extraordinary.
Exactement!
The best!!!
The man could do anything. The control, not a falter or any move out of place. The height he reaches. What a thrill to see him “fly”.
He is jaw dropping. What a legacy! Has anyone since come close?
I would give a year of my life just to see this man walk across a street
Go to Steps NYC on 74th and Broadway. he often comes in to take Nancy Bielski's 11: 30 a.m. open class.
@@katherineb9763 I hope he's still in New York throughout Covid ❤️

I've always been amazed by the speed in which he covered the entire stage. From one end to the other. Ahhhhh...the incredible height in his jumps.
Absolument merveilleux. Beau, raffiné, masculin. Parfait.
Misha could alter gravity. I get chills just watching him.
❤💐😃Excellent performances! Misha...Just the BEST DANCER and ARTIST!!!
Wow even all those years ago he still does it better then the best now , even though there are better turnouts ,feet and flexibility no one compares to baryshnikov
Unearthly. One of a kind. Sublime.
When watching the ballerina do 25+ pirouettes is a let down after watching Baryshnikov.
Perfection on two legs.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
What a beautiful specimen of a male. He may be only 5'5" tall but what a powerful man/dancer he is!
People don’t teach technique like this anymore, it’s a shame. He is so strong and so solid in his foundation. Something the ballet world is really lacking now. Ballet has started to become a show of flexibility tricks with no foundational training.
The man came from the Russian Ballet. I mean you don’t get any better training. The Russians don’t play.
Same thing has happened with opera singers, only worse.
The most magnificent dancer ever! He floats and turns with exacting precision, and his bounding leaps seem effortless, like he is dancing on the moon!
The movie White Nights! Check it out, great movie and made me aware of who he was.
The best!❤
I was fortunate to see him dance once and he was truly the master. It was as if he came leaping out of nowhere and sent your heart racing. Genius
Misha Barishonikov fantastico!! Rudolf Nurayvev e lui i migliori del mondo!!
Precisione tecnica fantasia grazia e movenze nella danza perfette!!❤❤❤❤❤
Watching Baryshnikov makes me feel like I've accomplished nothing in my life.
The Dirty Blonde try letting him inspire you to think of the amazing things you might accomplish instead. Unless you’re dead; the world is yours to interpret as you will. I wish you well as you pursue your dreams and achieve your goals.
gcjerryusc Absolutely agree. That's what I tell my students all the time.
And yet you have achieved a lot! Just not to the same heights as this extraordinary man... So few people do.
Aw, let him inspire you instead : )
He's just a young man moving around on a stage. I'd rather have been Pavarotti, (or have a Super Bowl ring and an Olympic gold medal, and I don't even like sports).
I saw him the very early 80's, it was magical, yes he is one of the greatest male dancers of all time. He floated through
the air.
Oh my God!! Scintillating !!! thank you !!
👏👏👏👏👏👏!!! Bravo Mijhail!!! Esperando ser YO... ❤❤❤❤🎉
Nureyev was excellent, but even he could not match Baryshnicov’s excellence and elegance
As you say, Nureyev was really great, but Baryshnicov even better.
Without any hesitation - THE BEST ! Of all times !
definitely interesting how he portrays the movement of the human body and he’s so freaking NIMBLE
El mejor bailarin de todos los tiemp0z😊
Eccezionale! Grandissimo.
He is beautiful.
The man always had such grace and strength in his dancing. At times he seemed to defy gravity and hover in the air. Loved to watch him dance.
Strength and sensitivity combined in a perfect way!!!!
He's not only the greates genius of all times, he's also so unbelievable GOOD LOOKING... ....he also is a gentle and very pleasant person.....
Just watching him reminds me that I trip walking up the stairs on the daily.
Could he BE more perfect???? 💗💗💗💗
Other dancers have technique, Mikhail has heart. I could watch him dance for hours!
Some dancers today are finally catching up to his brilliant technique. I think he ushered in the modern male ballet dancers that we see today. The man was ahead of his time and just impeccable in his execution.
Saw him at Kennedy Center several times and he took my breath away. His talent, charisma and humor were all there.
I read recently that he studied gymnastics briefly before settling into ballet. Natalia Osipova also started out as a gymnast. They both seem to have that amazing precision in their movements and the ability to hang in the air.
He used to fly. Always challenging gravity. THE BEST.
Barishnikov for ever
He seems to fly through the air he’s amazing ❤
The slow-motion Giselle was absolutely delicious.
I had the pleasure of seeing him dance live about 10 years ago. He couldn't do the jumps but he was magnificent...just a gift of nature. Seeing him do his turns and leaps here is just incredible.
Sublime 'Magia' 💙💜❤️♥️🥀🦋🌈

He's... He's flying...
El más grande !! The BEST !!
So talented. He made it look so easy. Beautiful!
That brought tears to my eyes! Beautiful!
Such a fine specimen of a man!!!!
He could absolutely fly. He’s brilliant. His incredible power, strength and control when he sticks a landing every-time after a massive leap is just unbelievable. The greatest!
it is very rare I will pay money to go see someone perform...My youngest sister, as a birthday gift took me to see Harry Connick Jr...WONDERFUL!...the ONLY person I would spend money on is to see Misha dance!! Very rare anyone comes into MY life I would actually go see....Mikhail...my sweet Lord in Heaven, you KNOW I would pay to go see him dance....beautifully gifted!!
Something that they learned put a great deal of time into and tried to stay human and give some personality too some people do such astounding things that your life feels gifted having seen it it’s truely beautiful
Ah! Splendiferous! Never will there ever be better.
I had the worst crush on him as a teenager. Late 80's into the 90's. Still find him very attractive.
I'm right there with you. Some girls liked rock stars, I loved him.
Not the only one!☺️
